  • I know this has been said time and time again, but for all those that doubt "Big Red" numbers don't lie. 3 World records (1 shared) that have stood almost 40yrs, largest margine of victory 31 lengths also untouched for almost 40yrs. This was no ordinary creature, look at the videos just before he wsd put down. Older and suffering from laminitis, but when they turned him loose he still ran like a champion.

  • I am by no means an expert at horse racing, but I know speed when I see it. I saw this beautiful animal run in person, and a horse wirh that much power and speed without the rider going to the crop is a true testimony of his greatness. Hand riden in KD, hand riden in Preakness, just a few light taps at Belmont. This animal loved to run.....and run he did.

  • The American arrogance and ignorance is famose . If a horse wins in USA, without ever leaving his country, without having traveled, it automatically becomes the best in history. Out of Your Truman Show , out Hollywood, in the real world, everyone knows ..the best horse (gallop) of the story is the Italian " RIBOT ", the best trotter is Italian " VARENNE " the best jockey is the Italian " FRANKIE DETTORI." All people can check these names on internet and make an assessment of the results.

  • @MrItaliano1900 - The ONLY assessment "real" racing enthusiasts are making from your ludicrous comments is that you know absolutely NOTHING about race horsing. I am also Italian and completely embarrassed by fellow Italians such as yourself....you are a true joke!!!!!!!!

  • @Dannykeith46 if you are really Italian deserve jail after having thus spoken, but I'm sure you're not Italian. Maybe you're a fucking half blood. If you do not know who is Varenne, if you do not know who Ribot ... go on wikipedia and see the results! You stupid idiot! I have 30 years in the racing world, and i'm also a horse owner. You are a disgusting person, you should be locked up in an asylum. WHY you write without having read anything ?? My God ! Studies, stupid fucking ignorant bastard!

  • @MrItaliano1900 - Yes...right...30 years of COMPLETE IGNORANCE. I know all about Ribot and Varenne. Take off the blinders and I hope you feel real tough cursing at me from overseas and hiding behind your laptop! Nice choice of language you ignorant fool! EVERYONE on these SEC forums has had it with you, blasted you and completely figured you out and SO HAVE I! I will no longer respond to your nonsense!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Dannykeith46 So if you know everything, you are dying with envy, you should be folded into a criminally prision, you Americans do not have one horse that can be called champion. oil thieves, guilty of this economic crisis.

  • @MrItaliano1900 - Why we liberated you in World War II I will NEVER understand! If it wasn't for America you would be speaking German RIGHT NOW yet you & other Eurpoeans continue to endlessly insult America. Maybe you are frustrated becuase you couldn't fight your own battles!!! Our young boys (including relatives of mine) died for your freedom and all our country gets is insults instead of gratitude...argue with that you $#%$#$%$ ASSHOLE!!!!

  • @Dannykeith46 You said that you are Italian, now you have freed us from Hitler .. ridiculous. We have conquered every corner of the world, fighting all the wars since Roman times. The discovery of America is Italian, Amerigo Vespucci gave the name "America". It 'just a great hotel. We have followed you in your stupid wars :Gulf, Iraq, Afaganistan, ect. We have dozens of American military bases that nobody wants. We have missed it for the case "Callipari" and massacre of "Cermis"...Ignorant!

  • @MrItaliano1900 - Bottom line is America saved your sorry ass in WWII...there is NO OTHER WAY of getting around it!!! You can "sugarcoat" your history all you want, but had it not been for America and Russia, Hitler would have ruled the world!!! Get over it!!! P.A. - Secretariat would have left Ribot and your overated trash jockey IN THE DUST!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Dannykeith46 receive a benefit is to be psychologically blackmailed our whole life....no thank you ... The time of thanksgiving is over, you should thank Christopher Columbus, because you live in a great hotel five stars and you do nothing all day, while people in the world dies of hunger. u are a parasite of society. The Italians are inventing the world, is the world we must say thanks to us.

  • @MrItaliano1900 - Speaking of Christopher Columbus, Italy was SO STUPID they wouldn't even finance his overseas trip so he had to go to SPAIN to receive the necessary funding. SPAIN gets the CREDIT ...NOT Italy!!! Do some research and explore your history before you open your worthless mouth!!! P.S. - Did Ribot even run a 1-1/4 race speeding up EACH quater of a mile right to the finish line? The answer is NO because ONLY SEC accomplished that feat (in the Kentucky Derby)...supernatural!!!!!

  • @MrItaliano1900 - "Secretariat is widening now....he is moving like a tremendous machine....Secretariat by 12....Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn..."

  • @MrItaliano1900 - I finally figured out why you hate America.......because your entire pathetic life you have been unable to piece together one correct English sentence! Stick to what you do best: either crushing grapes in an oversized barrel or overrating Italian horses that set NO records, and beat NO great horses!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Dannykeith46 I am not English, you stupid thief in the oil. You want a proper English ... ohh sorry. is already so much that I'm trying to talk this silly language. Perhaps you've forgotten that I am Italian. I will conclude this discussion by saying : I do not hate america, but there are some false things in your country. this mania of superiority, arrogance typical American is very annoying. Everyone knows that Ribot is the best horse in history, I leave you in your ignorance bye bye.

  • @MrItaliano1900 - "Everyone knows Ribot is the best horse in history"...."Everyone = YOU"....Yes...."YOU" are the only retard making this claim! Comparing Ribot to Secretariat borders on insanity..."Big Red" would have crushed Ribot similar to the way you crush your grapes!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Secretariat the greatest racehorse of all time. Believe it or not Sham ran the 2nd fastest Kentucky Derby ever, coming in 2nd to Big Red. Secreatariat's record time was 1:59.2/5 and Sham was 1:59.4/5. Manarchos winning time was 1:59.97 in 2001. These three horses ran the only sub 2 minute Kentucky Derbys in history.

  • Exquisite... relentless drive...what conformation, that stride, reaching and folding the turf under his hooves... yes, for Sham.... what might have been...

  • What is the name of the horse that was leading the race?????

  • @tonywhipple - The horse leading for the first half was "Shecky Greene," who's owner Joe Kellman named several of his horses after famous comedians.

  • What is the name of the horse that was leading the race?????

  • What is the name of the horse that was leading the race?????

  • what is the name of the song????

  • @cowboysr4real its by Ennio Morricone - and the music is titled "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

  • what is the name of the song in this vid????

  • Magnificent, magnificent video Kierkegaard73.

  • What is the name of the song after they start the race??? Anyone know????

  • Like pickin' off fish in a barrel.

  • We will have our biggest party ever the year after Obama leaves office.(smile)

Does anyone know of a horse that ran the last quarter in 23 seconds flat like Secretariat did in the Derby in a 1 1/4 mile race & ran each quarter faster than the previous?

  • By the way, to avoid any confusion, Mr. Nixon didn't resign office until August 1974. In the city I live in, we still have Nixon resignation day partys.

  • I read your comment and actually laughed out loud about you still having parties...:-)

  • It's the God's honest truth. In Austin TX every August they have a Nixon Resignation Day. If I'm a lyin' I'm a dyin', they throw parties for this.

  • I just watched it again and apologize for my previous rudeness. I'm not a fan of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - (was that Hugo Montenegro?) but the overall piece understood Secretariat's pure and purely transcendent achievement. Thanks for posting it.

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO its my favorite i have it on my favorites 5 stars!!

what is the name of the second song you use i know its from the good the bad and the ugly but its a different version whats the name??

  • Kirkegaard73 has the best Secretariat clips. His timing of clip to music is terrific (and I love his 'sidebar' videos for the extra flavor of the moment). I could live without the existential references--Secretariat is '...all alone and impossible to catch..." without pomposity.

  • Nice video, and a great horse..the greatest. The final words were so true and wish losing would be that beneficial as it was for Penny. I want to lose like that. Lose a coin flip and end up with Secretarait. You lose yet win..you win the greatest horse of all time.

  • Good choice of music. Tchaikosky's 1812 Overture! Well coordinated with the action. I concur about Sham, Kierkegaard73. Great, courageous, heroic horse. Any other year, would've been a triple crown winner himself.

  • Celtic I heard that they are currently working on a Sec video =)

  • They made movies about Seabusicit Phar Lap etc. why cant they make one about SEC set against the despair of vietnam throw in a little fiction for a story line revolving around SEC's inspiriational performances.

  • I understand there's an extraordinary novel making the rounds of several lit agents in NYC...anybody else know anything?

  • I was waiting for someone to answer your question. What have you heard that is extraordinary, do you know who author is?

  • Just buzz from a few folks in NYC...who write "It's a super, unexpected kind of read"...." a plot that resonates to this day"...."all from an unknown author..."...I'll dig a bit deeper for details....

  • assume this is a novel about Secretariat? your comments so interesting, i.e. unespected kind of read, what cld this possibly mean?! I wonder, good luck

  • There is apparently a movie in the works about Secretariat by Walt Disney

  • God I hope you're right! They NEED to make a movie about this horse! He's not just another racehorse. I am praying that they make a storyline around Secretariat but use only the actual footage of his wins...so everyone can see his "supernatural" gift that only he possessed...never to be repeated even by humans. Today's generation should be inspired by the mythical greatness of Secretariat's wins...

  • It's not "The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly", considering how incredibly fast this Derby really was, it's more like "The Good, The Better, & The Best", meaning Our Native, Sham, and then of course SECRETARIAT.

  • I love Sham great horse ...great heart

  • Everytime I watch Secretariat and Sham head-to-head it gives me goosebumps. Wonderful Video. Sham put up a good race but Secretariat was the better horse!

  • If anything defines the notion of the "Tragic Hero" it is Sham. Any other year, Any other Year...

  • When I talk about Secretariat, I talk of Sham as well. Great horse, and yes, had Secretariat not had his own dates with destiny, surely Sham would of been a TC winner.

  • To the memory and glory of Sham. Homer himself could not have scribed a greater Tragic Hero. His courage to stand and defy the gods at Belmont should inspire even the most cowardly of men.

  • @Kierkegaard73 He defied the gods but his opponent was a titan--an offspring of the very gods themselves

  • @12exceller Sham's place in horse racing history is secure, although he didn't win the Derby or Preakness, most would agree he is at least in the category of the 22 horses or so that have won 2 of the 3 TC events. And that is good company indeed.

  • Sham and Alydar.

  • Thank you for posting this absolutely stunning video!

Very good choice of music!I enjoyed the added touch of historical flashbacks!I would give your video over 5 stars if the rating system would allow for such!

  • Why Jazzgirl you are too kind. I appeciate your kind words. As a reminder, I am all for applicability of these videos - that is, of course, that Sham is never perceived as the "ugly" or the "bad" lol

  • I concur!

    A great race indeed!

  • Kier,

WHat great choices in music and "the good, the bad, and the ugly...." who is who?????

    AN all around WINNER....excellent....

  • As long as you do not choose Sham as the, "Bad" or the "Ugly", lol, then, as Tolkien would say and I concur with this: Applicability is far better then Allegory, for the latter gives the author domination over the reader(viewer) while the former gives the reader(viewer) control. That being an overly verbose reply I wish to save you from other lunatic thoughts by me, lol, so thank you for your post. I am thrilled you liked my choice of music.

  • Hi, in 5:21 you created a work of art, passion, history, and flash back for me to the events of the past. Thank you. Beautiful work.

  • Thank you so much for this comment. It is exactly what I was trying to achieve for myself when I made it. Individuals are all different but passion is something they all have within themselves

  • Very well done! I especially liked the music when Secretariat and Sham are alone in the frame(s). It gave me chills.

Good Lord, did those two ever bring out the best in each other! Makes me beam with pride for both.

    Thanks for posting this.

    Take care.

  • Mu uncle saw his races he said he had never seen anything like it before =) I believe him Secretariat was a true marvel of horse racing!

  • Oooh wow! I love this video very inspiring and influential! Spectacular job!

  • Yes, that horse was the one good thing about 1973.

Looking forward to the Belmont tribute...

  • I did see this back in 73,and you knew you were seeing history in the making;more than history, magic!

  • Red Roses for Secretariat, even then it truly looked like a coronation of a Prince,Ron Turcotte was standing up, raising hat high as if to say, people this is vindication for Wood Memorial, you can throw that one out ! (and as he has said over and over, if only he had known). Acc to new book, Lucien DID tell Sweat and I think Charlie Davis, NOT to tell Ron about the abscess !!!

  • Fantastic! 5 stars! The footage is so clear! Nice choice of music. Brings tears. SECRETARIAT stole my heart that long ago summer of 73 when he ran to immortality!!

  • Thank you. And happy are thoses who witnessed his majestic run of 73', for those can truly be called the "fortunate ones".

  • This is really wonderful, and w/new video, I love that lone shot of Himself tearing down track in workout, and Turcotte standing up in saddle after Derby, what a thrill !!

  • ... and notice how the outrider is turning and looking up at Turcotte as he dofts (sp) his cap to the crowd.. it just seems to bestow even more honor, would love to see more extended view of this film!

  • It ain't you, it ain't me . . . I ain't no fortunate son, no!

  • Hi, just watched again, I love the part as outrider escorts Secretariat and Turcotte, w/crowd. Is there longer film of that? What was it in?

  • YeS! A little Ennio Morricone. Fits in with the "showdown" theme since this was a showdown not between the fastest gunslingers, but rather the two fastest horses running the two fastest Derby's in history. I enjoy it very much. 5 stars!

  • I know, I was going to do a sequence(sp) with The Good (Secretariat) etc.. but I just couldnt call Sham "The Bad" still less the "Ugly"

  • You were right not to. The direction you went was more appropriate. Nice.
