@07braves The interpretive tradition you follow goes way back... almost 500 years! That's pretty old. However, the Christian faith system is almost 2000 years old. The interpretive tradition followed by Catholics today goes back almost 2000 years. The early Christian writings are replete with references to the regenerative aspect and necessity of baptism. Perhaps through the centuries a person or small group followed your tradition, but none of consequence, until Luther and his ilk.

@07braves You presented Scripture to support your view of baptism, but you haven't commented on gnr's exigesis of John3:5 (you must be born again of water and spirit). The Scripture references which you interpret as the Spirit (only) being the "new" baptism actually mean that His Spirit is now available to indwell us, whereas before Christ this was not so. The Old Covenant rituals have been fulfilled,transformed and perfected in Jesus, so now baptism actually washes away our sins.

Does that mean water baptism? Not at all! The water we are born of is not H²0, but Pure water which comes from the new birth, whereby we being regenerated are washed clean from the stain of sin.

@07braves Though it might go unsaid, faith in Jesus as Savior is the necessary precondition for any sacrament to be effective. Baptism saves in that it is the sacramental ritual by which a believer is brought into God's family. It is the New Covenant transformation and perfection of the OC induction ritual, circumcision. That's why infants are baptized. Even someone who can't reason can be purfied by this great gift from God. It's a visible sign of an invisible reality (God's grace imparted).

@AmericanBerean another thing friend...the baptism of which John gave was a shadow of what JESUS would do..the baptism of fire and spirit...there is a clear difference..again think on this..How can people speak in tongues and NOT be born again of the spirit?...they certainly were. am i saying that h2o baptism isnt important..far from it..h2o baptism is an outward showing of what has happened already of the SPIRIT.

@AmericanBerean 1 last thing...think about the text...Jesus said that which is flesh is flesh..that which is of spirit is spirit. human birth , the baby goes through the the labor moment..and then is BORN into the world. Jesus is using this same analogy..the person (BABE) goes through the water (HOLY GHOST, fire, JESUS BLOOD..for the remission of sins)..and then the person is BORN OF THE SPIRIT..BORN AGAIN. Why do you think that young Christians were and are called Babes..in need of milk .

@medievalman86 A valid Baptism is: someone (doesn't have to be a consecrated priest, as needed for other Sacraments) dunks you (or pours or sprinkles water on you) and says "I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit". You are then an adopted child of God, even if you're an infant. If you're capable of reason, you must have faith in the first place. Immersion is preferred, but pouring or sprinkling clean water is acceptable, as a matter of practicality.

it would be more correct to just say Catholic church the Vatican maybe at Rome but the people of rome as well as the Italian Government would not like people suggesting Rome the city itself is governing itself thats just the Vatican. As for the baptism it really doesnt matter just answer the questions and know what your doing which an 8 yr old is a smart child they will know what it is. As an infant your God parents answer for you and raise you as such in it

People like him never go anywhere. They don't dare debate anyone that is versed in the faith because their arguments crumble under examination. People like this that copy and paste arguments are never taken seriously in the world of apologetics. I recommended to zkeuker that he actually begin to read the Scriptures and learn them and to LOVE GOD. Loving the WORD of GOD is a lot more important than Apologetics. If you LOVE the word of GOD you naturally become a good apologist. Pray for him
