Actually, that's incorrect. The NCAA does not "use" the BCS or the AP and in fact does not crown a national champion whatsoever. The AP and the BCS, however, do. It was a split year and a failure of the BCS for allowing it to happen. Recall that without the contractual agreement for the coaches to vote for the BCS champ, we have no idea who the coaches would have crowned. The AP had and has no such agreement.
