The reason that we are forgiven and declared just in the sight of God is because Jesus Christ took the wrath of God opun Himself, so that we could be saved when we trust in Him. It was an exchange, the Christ suffered and died in our and my place. This is what the song is about, and this is what Romans 3 is about, especially vers 24-26. Hope that is somewhat clarifiying.
