I have to agree with the a lot of the other folks... pre-2000 country music is when it was the best... 60's and 70's were the best, got kind of lame in the 80's and then picked back up with early to mid-90's... now it just... pop music with twang!
I was a DJ at a major nightclub called Denim & Diamonds in Los Angeles and I was from the South so i knew real country and I played this song to death along with Foster & Lloyd stuff.
I loved this song as a child...the writing is awesome! I'm only 28, but I can appreciate this traditional country music a lot more than the Taylor Swift crap that is out now. This song ranks right up there with some of my all time favorites!
Its great to see so many people acknowledge the fact that today's music sucks balls. They don't make music like that anymore because THEY CAN'T!! The producers back then were talented musicians. Today's engineers do none of the work. Its all copied and pasted with synthetic everything. FAKERY. Epidemic of imposters out there performing now. The only talented artist left thats being heavily promoted is Brad Paisley and all his shit sounds the same and he's a royal asshole. Rules him out.
This video aired on CMT when it came out and though I miss the country from the 90's I remember people saying the same thing then as they do now on how it's not country. The 90's country was also referred to as "pop country". I've been a country music night club dj since 1995 and i've heard it all. I loved the country then as I do now.
Country music and rock are suffering from the same problems. Too many people in powerful positions creating "flavor of the week" music. They crank out as many songs and artists as they can hoping to get a mega-hit rather than really seeking out the ones with real creativity. About 15% of it is really good. The rest is just a nuisance.
I agree todays country is crap! 90s ruled. Bubble gum country is not country. Please if you want to sing pop go sing pop , get off my country station!
@edfant1970 Thats my problem with today's artists and songwriters The artists music does't sound country and the writers write about things that should not even be performed by Country artists. If artists want to perform Country music make it Country not some polished sounding pop.
@paulsbunyans Yep - I saw the video and forgot his name until years later - I typed the title in on YouTube and saw his name. This song makes me feel good after a hard day at work!
@crazyhorse1369 the videos are very similar in fact in alot of ways they are the same video. The only difference is this version of the video there is no clips of him and a woman fighting. Other than that they are the same exact video.
And - his latest CD "Revival" is fantastic. He just gets better and better - and, if I may say, he's hotter now at age 51 than he was in the late 80's.
What a great song! i decided to look him up, ive been a fan of country music since october 2010 but have heard songs throughout my life, but Darius Rucker said he liked him growing up so i'm taking the timeline back in time to see the big country stars ive missed out on, he's amazing:)
Atlanta Georgia..Summer '94...a hot, humid, night in an eastside Avondale saloon, full of big cowboy hats, short-short Georgia "peaches," and a dance to this song with that lusicious fruit named Elaine.
I'm more of an 80s rock fan but no doubt 90s country was excellent stuff as well. This is a brilliantly constructed song from back in the days when music was actually still music. Hopefully some day idiotic crap like American Idol will go away so the music industry can get back to what it once was.
Just love this song so much! I fell for him after watchin this video more than 50 times. I love his voice and i agree, they just don't make country music like they used to, which is a shame.
Too all of you Foster is true country music and incase if ya'll think real country is dead its alive in Texas. Radney Foster is one of the great Texas Country Singer song writters!
The late '80s/early '90s was such a great time for literate, intelligent country music with Radney Foster, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kim Richey (co-writer of this song), Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Kathy Mattea, etc. It's a shame that none of these artists ever get airplay anymore.
wow, this song takes me back to when I was a kid. I really miss this kind of Country Music. I get so sick of the "pop" Kenny Chesney/Rascal Fags stuff. Resurect Radney Foster, Billy Dean, Chris Ledoux, and other legends back to the charts.
Sweet damn, I love this song! It's been a favorite since I was at least 7 years old. Love the tune, and the lyrics blow me away. They flow so wonderfully, and he doesn't use any childish rhymes. I love that he wrote a number of my favorites from other artists, too. He's beyond talented!
And this may be influenced by the song, his voice and the fact that he has a guitar, but...is it weird that I find him reasonably attractive in this video?
It appears that this "Nobody Wins" is credited as having been written by Radney Foster and Kim Richey. Another, different "Nobody Wins," however, is indeed by Kris Kristofferson. I can't deny that he was more successful, but in the case of who this song was by, I daresay you're misinformed.
Or even a college professor, but it gives me hope. I look nerdy to say the truth, but this proves that if I do good enough I can still make it to the country music bussiness... possibly.
He looks sort or bookish (I think it's the glasses) and reserved, and sad to say, he probably wouldn' be very successful in today's country music market against all the hot-to-trot Kenny Chesney types, where it's all about having bulging biceps and straight, white teeth and where singing, paying and songwriting talent is almost an afterthought. Personally, I'll take the mega-talented, average Joe types like Foster, Parnell and Crowell over pretty boys like Paisley, Chesney and McGraw any day.
I love Mary Chapin Carpenters vocals in this as well. I'm a morning radio guy for over 25 years. I still have the neat promotional stuff Radney sent out to radio with this album. As I recall, he also sent out some neat stuff to his fanclub as well. Awesome songwriter, performer, and human being!!
This is true country. todays country is crap. I grew up on the oldies like Eddie Rabbitt, Pasty Cline, Lorretta, Restless Heart & all the 90's stuff. I miss the old songs
@BarryManilowFan4eva I agree with you. There are two guys that are bringing back true country. Chris Young and Easton Corbin, go take a look and listen to these guys, they are AWESOME!!!
@BarryManilowFan4eva totally agree with ya big cuz lol (guess who this is), lol :P lotta 2days country is crap and if someone comes out with a good old fashiones "too Country" sounding song the radio stations rather play the fake country stuff that needs to be on a pop playing radio station
@BarryManilowFan4eva i totally agree, because this is the music you can dance to. I do like the music now a days also, but i kinda quit listenin when it became "pop" country....like rascall flats, kenny chesney, lady antebellum and several others....they just killed it for me. These artists still produce good music, obviously because they've made it big.
Wow. I hadn't thought about this song in years, but it came on the radio yesterday when my sister and I were in the car together and we both recognized it instantly! I even remembered the words... This is a fantastic song, why can't country still be like this?
Wow I love this song!! It is well-delivered in this video too. I saw Radney last month for the first time with Keith Urban when Keith invited him up to play Raining on Sunday, a duet in Dallas, Texas. It was amazing!!
It is a cying shame that they dont't play his music on country music radio nowadays. It makes me sad to know that things have to be up to the country music scene and not from the heart of a person. I just don't understand that but I think it is time for the industry to wake-up and give these guys a chance to let today's fans hear what it was like before it got too complicated.
Radney Foster is, without a doubt, the most underrated singer/songwriter of our time. I love his sound and his lyrics, and I don't understand why he didn't receive much airplay in the Atlanta area.
Emotion my fat arse, The video took any emotion that there was from the song, Also, your grammar is very poor, You should have written , "If you were a musician, you would know. Was is incorrect and shows a poor education. However, i am a musician, but not a very good one. Radney is a great musician and vocalist and I wasn't knocking him, just the stupid video.
whats an arse? i thought you were the educated one! and you dont know nothing about music! i bet you are one of those guys that listen to all the music from the late ninetys till now and that is not music in my book! its all went to shit ! this was real country music!
Not to get in the middle of it, but maybe he's just not American. My wife spells horribly, and she looks like she's stupid if you just see her write english, but she speaks 6 languages fluently, English was just her last...Who knows, maybe he is a rocket scientist. Either way, it's a good song.
Okay I absolutally love love love this song but did anyone else think this video took away from the song a little? or maybe thats just me... he just kinda reminds me of a dorky little brother singing along with the song and trying to look cool....but hey every one loves dorky baby bros!!! But great voice and fantastic guitar!!!
Way back when, I had a delivery type job. I used to hear the same old crap on the radio everyday. I kept switching channels. I had always hated the Country twang. But, it grew on me. Radney was one of the first ones that I listened to. Now I am all country, all the time. I've converted a lot of people to it too. Radney is great.
This is the type of music I LOVE listening to when I am driving in middle of nowhere 3am in the morning, smoking a cigarette with the windows rolled down, and this type of music blasting outta my car. :-)
What a great song! Why do so many couples go through this. Maybe its the power of Love that makes us do things that we normally wouldnt. Unfortuntely it can be good things or negative things. So true at the heat of the moment we do things, later look back and regret them
If you saw this on CMT, then it was well after the video had dropped from the charts. As far as I know the version with the storyline aired. This version never seen in the US.
Since posting, I've found an old radio interview with MCC,and she talks about that song. Also found the CD. She's credited with the backup vocal. I seem to remember seeing the video, but am not certain. I'll just keep on looking. Thanks for you replies.
It reminds me when I was in Raleigh, NC, 1993, and I bought this CD (Del Rio, TX 1959).
The overall production is very good, Michael Joyce on the bass with some brilliant ideas and... Steve Fishell on Pedal and Lap Steel Guitar... FABULUOUS... what a sound!
This is the video where I first saw Radney in 1995! I have been a great fan ever since. He is truly a great singer-songwriter and a warm, caring person. I've been to many of his concerts and he even dedicated two songs to my husband and I on our 30th Anniversary at the "Mucky Duck" in Houston, TX.
Excellent singer/songwriter. What a sweet, smooth voice. Went to a concert of his at our county fair, great stuff! Happy to find this vid today, thanks!
I love this song......Radney is awesome! soooo good......

I like the song but the video looks stupid i been hearing it on country stations could anyone tell me if i can find it here on country?
chuy020 3 years ago
Its kinda stupid to have such a talented artist, jumpin round like a jackass, Radney should wise up, hes worth more than that.
rocker53zero 3 years ago 3
its called emotion you jackass!!! if you was a musician you would know!
ace586 3 years ago
Emotion my fat arse, The video took any emotion that there was from the song, Also, your grammar is very poor, You should have written , "If you were a musician, you would know. Was is incorrect and shows a poor education. However, i am a musician, but not a very good one. Radney is a great musician and vocalist and I wasn't knocking him, just the stupid video.
rocker53zero 3 years ago
who was talking about grammar? you cant even spell you moron! how is that for grammar?
ace586 3 years ago
my spelling is just fine
rocker53zero 3 years ago
whats an arse? i thought you were the educated one! and you dont know nothing about music! i bet you are one of those guys that listen to all the music from the late ninetys till now and that is not music in my book! its all went to shit ! this was real country music!
ace586 3 years ago
Not to get in the middle of it, but maybe he's just not American. My wife spells horribly, and she looks like she's stupid if you just see her write english, but she speaks 6 languages fluently, English was just her last...Who knows, maybe he is a rocket scientist. Either way, it's a good song.

i bet you dont even know what kind of guitar he is playin you idiot!

One of my favorites. This album is real country music.

Now this is what I call REAL Country Music!! :-)

Kim Richey does sing on several of his songs, but this one is Mary Chapin Carpenter.
monkeytree5 3 years ago
Hes got the Dwight Yoakum side stomp going. It works mighty well though!! Rock on Radney!
pipemaster40 3 years ago 4
That is Mary-Chapin Carpenter doing the background vocals.

I've seen this version on CMT.
StoogeWatcher 4 years ago
If you saw this on CMT, then it was well after the video had dropped from the charts. As far as I know the version with the storyline aired. This version never seen in the US.

we need some new Radney! Lord knows I've worn out Del Rio TX 1959 four times over!
PlasticNerd 4 years ago
Since posting, I've found an old radio interview with MCC,and she talks about that song. Also found the CD. She's credited with the backup vocal. I seem to remember seeing the video, but am not certain. I'll just keep on looking. Thanks for you replies.

To me this is the best era of country music in late 80's and early 90's
kipp0341 4 years ago 2
is there a video that includes Mary Chapin Carpenter doing the back-up vocal?
barbcallero 4 years ago
Not as far as I know.
