Great game! From KC's view, It looks like Chuky was able to accomplish whatever he wanted, even the slowest strategical plans. what was Anand doing? he had no plan, no "trump cards", did he? Maybe trying to lodge a knight on d5, or even pressuring the king side a bit more... nothing! And what was the idea of putting the king in the middle of the board? I wish we could have Anand's views on this game.
Ivanchuk should write a book on this tournament. These games are all brilliant. And he beats Kasparov, Karpov, Anand, and everyone else! Unbelievable!!
The game is also very instructive in how Ivanchuk won by applying squeezing positional pressure. His pieces never actually "infiltrated" the Black position (rooks on the 7th, knights on the 6th, etc.), but instead controlled everything from afar. Black's queen, for instance, spent the whole game in the corner of the board, but this turned out to be the ideal place for it!
On retrospect, Ivanchuk's 24th move: Ndf6 was really a key move in the position. It meant that after 27...Qa7+, the White king was forced into the centre of the board because of 28. Kf1 Ng4! 29. Qg3 Bg5! On f3, the knight also controlled the key d5 square which allowed for the ...d5!! breakthrough.
The Sicilian Najdorf is my favorite opening as black, so I particularly enjoy seeing games where black wins with it. This was another excellent example. Great commentary too, as always.
Molest the knight, lol
