Go watch Trinity and Beyond: The Nuclear Bomb Movie, these tests WERE conducted in the 50s and early 60s until Kennedy signed the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty which banned atmospheric tests, but not underground tests. YES it destroyed the environment, YES radiation spread around the globe and throughout the upper atmosphere, and NO they do not still happen. The damage is done, no reason to flip out now. @Hando567 The Partial Test Ban Treaty restricted space and underwater testing, ground level testing was banned with the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. In either regard the strontium, cesium, and iodine isotopes are still doing damage today. Where I am in Spokane it was downwind of some Yucca Flat tests and we now have a cluster of thyroid issues. It would be interesting to see who was opposed to the testing treaties back in the 60's, and consider in hindsight how wrong they were.

That's the problem with science...so many times in history technology improves beyond the point where we understand the sum total of its effects. Take DDT for example...it was a great insecticide...but it doesn't break down, and slowly gets concentrated in the food chain.
As technology advances faster than our ability to measure its effects, we always run the risk of hurting ourselves without realizing it....and sometimes we do realize it, but too late.

We don't always know the side effects of new technology. That was my point.
I think what happens is that initially scientists and businessmen do not know, then the technology gets used, then the scientists and businessmen eventually figure out the side effects, but they have a vested interest in continuing to use the technology, so they hide it (like from fallout from nuclear weapons testing) from the public. I really don't think they knew at the very beginning, when the technology was untested and brand new. Some effects take time to show up.
This is truly something regrettable, however in its own way, these phenomena are quite beautiful and striking, and hopefully these tests are part of the number of factors which enabled the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), keeping humanity, with all it's flaws, on this earth

That's the problem with science...so many times in history technology improves beyond the point where we understand the sum total of its effects. Take DDT for example...it was a great insecticide...but it doesn't break down, and slowly gets concentrated in the food chain.
As technology advances faster than our ability to measure its effects, we always run the risk of hurting ourselves without realizing it....and sometimes we do realize it, but too late.

I think what happens is that initially scientists and businessmen do not know, then the technology gets used, then the scientists and businessmen eventually figure out the side effects, but they have a vested interest in continuing to use the technology, so they hide it (like from fallout from nuclear weapons testing) from the public. I really don't think they knew at the very beginning, when the technology was untested and brand new. Some effects take time to show up.

Over a thousand nuclear weapon tests managed to increase the background radiation by less than 1%.
Most people WILLINGLY increase their exposure to ionizing radiation by several times background with various medical tests, air travel, poor ventilation(radon) etc.
