Other than using a dull axe, you treated the animal humanely. This is exactly what I grew up on the farm learning how to do. We grew everything we ate, and sold off the rest. Anyone who thinks this is cruel has never had to do anything for themselves in their life.

But the main thing it was raised to be eaten, and this was reflected in the conditions it was raised in. Unlike the farmers who just produce them in masses for nothing more than money

A note to you from an old school way to do it.If you hang the bird upside down on a piece of rope or string ,They will always be calm.Use a sharp knife and cut their throats...its much more humans and quickly done with certainty
Here is an idea...SPEND $20 AND BUY A SHARP KNIFE!!!! You people have absolutely no respect for those animals.... Can you honestly not know that holding a dull axe 2 inches away from a chickens neck and dropping it is doing nothing but causing pain?
It is much easier when you use a 2x2 board..you lay it over their neck..step on either side and pull..much less traumatic..if you have to hit it morethan once with the hatchet..they becaome REALLY difficult to pluck. PLEASE watch my "killing the old layers" video!
