you talking about your family member was funny. "and it gets on my freaking nerves" lol. it would get on my freaking nerves too. i would have to chose..... the pope? thatd be real funny to watch catholics see the pope announce hes an atheist! lol
I also dislike that argument regarding being able to gain everything and losing nothing...My Christian friend uses the exact same thing in one of our arguments and it irritates me......
Oh Pascal's Wager? Ya its a flawed argument anyways, because it ignores the THOUSANDS of possible religions that could be right, and the hundreds of denominations each not to mention the as of yet uncreated ones. So basically the argument says you have a 1 in a hundred billion chance of getting to heaven (what ever it is) at the risk of wasting what is likely your only life.
Wrestling entrance music. What a great question! I personally like Andy Kaufman's "Bum ba-da" entrance tune, but I would probably pick Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster".
I truly despise teaching children to believe in god in order to evade the devil. My niece and nephew were brought up that way, and it kills me to think about it. My niece is downs and has no stake in the game regardless. Theism has done nothing for my nephews in my opinion. They are all moody, and sad, and one has a violent nature. They are all strict born agains.
Wouldn't "agnostic" be a more accurate description of yourself, rather than "atheist"? Deists believe there is a god despite a lack of evidence, thereby requiring faith to support their beliefs. Can't it be said that atheists believe there is no god despite a lack of evidence to prove god's non-existence? And doesn't that mean atheists require faith as well to support their beliefs? At least agnostics are more honest in saying that there is no evidence one way or the other.
There is no evidence for a CHRISTIAN interpretation of God. But as for an invisible being creating the universe, that as you correctly say, cannot be proved either way. The CHRISTIAN interpretation of God is full of paradoxes, but a universal creator is entirely plausible. It is whether this creator intervenes in any way with the universe that cannot be proved, or disproved.
Theism/atheism refer to belief, whereas gnosticism/agnosticism refer to knowledge. Though there has been much debate about the use of agnosticism in the English language, the general rules of etymology dictate that the use of the suffix "-ic" converts a noun to an adjective, thus the term "agnostic' should be used as an adjective and not a noun (root word: gnosis).
This is why most atheists consider themselves agnostic atheists. And no, no faith is required to be skeptical of unproven things.
The one thing all atheists have in common is that they don't believe in gods. Atheism is not the belief that there are no gods. At minimum, it is a *lack* of belief. I am an atheist in that I lack belief in gods.
Atheism and agnosticism are not mutually exclusive categories, as TrenchantAtheist points out.
atheists don't need faith to support their believes. everything in your life proves there is no god. this is the evidence we need. the fact that there is no evidence to support the existence of the spaghetti monster doesn't mean we need to have faith in its non existence.
not that i follow any particular person but i did hear a humorous yet thought provoking statement from a christian. it was this: Atheists have more faith than christians, they have to. If I took a wrist watch and completely dismantled it...then put all of the pieces in a bag, shook the bag for 300 million years...what chances would it be that after that time, there would be a working watch inside? meaning that "big bang" theory had all of the elements that just "fell together"...ID
Doing a degree in theoretical physics, i love the logic in your "arguements" / discussions, and im very supportive of your channel and cant wait for more videos!
"fear and emotional blackmail" .. i couldn't agree more. Even *as* a Christian it makes me upset when I see this happen. It's a shame so many church leaders/members feel they must resort to such despicable lows. I suppose that says something about the strength of their own convictions (or lack there of).
Keaven, in all of the thoughtful comments you've left on my videos, you show that you've really heard what I'm saying - that I'm not condemning 'all Christians' (as some have tried to characterise me) but that I'm questioning unreasonable/controlling/disparaging attitudes which, if anything go *against* what I see as the inclusive message of the figure of Jesus.
I truly appreciate your kind words. Your approach mirrors that of many wonderful Christians I have in my life. Thank you.
Nice to see i'm not the only one tired of pascals wager. I know this gay who constantly trots it out like its the ultimate response. Having to explain all the many levels on which the argument fails is tedious in the extreme!
Lol! I think I'd've read it as a typo anyway, but thanks for the clarification, Vicepresident.
There are *so many* levels on which the wager fails aren't there. I might do a video about it sometime soon. One reason I like making videos is that it stops me having to repeat refutations of silly arguments like that in conversation. I can just point someone to the video and use my energy for something more important(!)
He he, well they tend to take a few days each, JT, because I create all the artwork and animation from scratch. Due to a busy schedule, I don't get as much time as I'd like to devote to making videos, which is why I restrict my own vids to topics I find really important. But I love the process, and time seems to fly when I'm putting it all together.
Nice. I agree with you about Dawkins, but Dennet understands the political climate of America and is good at "local" deconversions. Dawkins doesn't live in the US, so I guess he is excused. ;)
Hey, GA. Yes, I think you're right about that. Dennett seems more adept in that way, and I'm sure, as you say, that has a lot to do with Dawkins coming from the UK, where atheism really hasn't been that big a deal.
The Undercover Mosque series' are great. I hope you enjoyed watching them as much as I did.
I've just noticed I used the word "enjoyed", instead of using another word, that more closely represented my feelings, during both; watching each of the episodes, and reflecting after having watched them. In fact, now that I think about it I was actually rather mortified by the evidence revealed throughout the series.
Is it technically possible to enjoy something so disturbing?

Great answers, and done in a professional manner, even while wearing pink! LOL
Dawkins has been an inspiration to Atheists such as myself, he made me feel that it really is okay to openly be a non-believer. Truly enjoyable video Doug! :)
Well, consider yourself spared an unpleasant fate there. 10 years ago I might have said differently -- and maybe not even then.
My partner talked me into buying a flight suit once that he quite likes me in. I'll leave it at that, lest I become unduly self-revelatory -- assuming I haven't already done so. lol
ProfMTH- As ever, this was *so* well done. Wonderfully and interestingly illustrated. More than once I found myself saying, "I wish I could do that!"
I agree prof ... this is typical "Qualia Quality" that makes all his videos a pleasure to watch. I mentioned this before, guess I feel so strongly about it that I'll say it again .... Qualias videos should be mandatory viewing for young minds to help develope critical thinking skills.
That would have been a good tag question, Knightxd4. I can only say who's been important to me. Another name would be Jonathan Miller. His 'Brief history of disbelief' was excellent, though ratings suffered from a curious lack of publicity...
What a great video! You obviously put a lot of time and effort in to these videos, and it shows! Its always a great joy to see you've posted a new one. I agree with you on your ideas about the fear of hell. I don't think it makes makes people act more compassionate at all!
And you tagged me! I've never been tagged before! I'll get working on that response.
"I think £20 works out around $40 at the moment."
That sounds about right and, by the way, is sufficient to explain why while my partner and I were walking around Manhattan today we heard *so* many British accents from people holding lots of shopping bags. ;-)

As ever, this was *so* well done. Wonderfully and interestingly illustrated. More than once I found myself saying, "I wish I could do that!"
And you look adorable in the leotard. ;-)

You *often* leave me thinking that, Prof!
(That 'I wish I could do that'. Not that you look adorable in a leotard - that's a sight I've yet to see!) ;^>

Well, consider yourself spared an unpleasant fate there. 10 years ago I might have said differently -- and maybe not even then.
My partner talked me into buying a flight suit once that he quite likes me in. I'll leave it at that, lest I become unduly self-revelatory -- assuming I haven't already done so. lol
ProfMTH 3 years ago
Lol! Though I did see you sporting a rather slinky little number in your own tag video(!)

It's a good thing poor Jean Harlow is dead. She'd have been crushed to see my head tacked on to her lovely form. ;-)

Was it one of those mysterious things Charlene was referring to that a woman ain't s'posed ta see? ;^>

I agree prof ... this is typical "Qualia Quality" that makes all his videos a pleasure to watch. I mentioned this before, guess I feel so strongly about it that I'll say it again .... Qualias videos should be mandatory viewing for young minds to help develope critical thinking skills.

Indeed.

Outside of the four horsemen, who would you pick as your most important atheist? Personally, I think I would pick Colonel Robert G. Ingersoll.
knightxd4 3 years ago
That would have been a good tag question, Knightxd4. I can only say who's been important to me. Another name would be Jonathan Miller. His 'Brief history of disbelief' was excellent, though ratings suffered from a curious lack of publicity...

As always, a treat.
And as usual, I'm left anticipating your next offering.

Cheers, Dave. In between uploading this and writing this comment, I've been tagged again, so it may be fairly soon... ;^>
A couple of longer ones are on the way this month too.

This video, like your others, is a treat.

Sweet! I made it into the community pictures. Does that mean I'm somebody? Probably not.
Nice answers.

Thanks, Eequalsfb. He he, glad you spotted yourself! I tried to get as many pictures as I could on without the sliding photo 'jagging' too much.

Hi Doug, really well presented and produced, again. Thanks.

Cheers, Pete. Well, if you're brave enough to sing 'Tom's Diner', I'm brave enough to wear spandex!

Even with a tag video you have the ability to turn it into a proffesional job!
I'm not worthy! .... great job!

Your own video was brilliantly entertaining as always, and I completely agreed with you about Rowan Williams(!)
Cheers!

Cheers, Mary

Thanks for your compliment too. That's really lovely to hear - much appreciated. ;^>

Thanks, variable.
I think £20 works out around $40 at the moment. It's creeping up. I hope it's a lot more by the 21st!
Cheers. ;^>

"I think £20 works out around $40 at the moment."
That sounds about right and, by the way, is sufficient to explain why while my partner and I were walking around Manhattan today we heard *so* many British accents from people holding lots of shopping bags. ;-)

Lol! I *thought* when I checked the exchange rate, Prof, "Must take a trip across the pond sometime soon..."(!) ;^>

You truly must. It's like a fire sale here for Europeans. lol
