That is piston slap, there may be some damage to the piston skirts and it will show when the oil is drained. I have seen the skirts completely broken around the bottom edge that it filled the oil pan and blocked the flow when draining the oil, these engines still ran quite well...LOL
thats not a lifter....its too low in tone....lifters sound more like a sewing machine and closer to the top....thats more internal....like they said if your using 87....you should not even have the car. i run 93 with lucas octane booster and torco.
Its the infamous piston slap gnictry----dont worry about it. Ive got 135,000 unbelievably hard miles on mine and it was slapping straight off the showroom floor--
I think that most engines are built a bit on the loose side now so that they have less friction; they try to squeeze out every bit of fuel economy they can in order to meet CAFE standards. Heck, brake rotors/drums, sheetmetal, body parts, frames, and even oil's thinner 'cause the auto manufacturers need to keep Uncle Nosy....I mean Sam out of their business as much as possible, so they spend more money to find more economy.
Hmm...I wonder if they had a bad batch. Mine's an 02 with 5K miles on it, and it sounds just like this motor. Louder when it sits a while, then Quiets down after running a while. I figured the lifters drained down and needed to pump back up. Should I be pulling mine down??
well mine went away after lifters replaced...but now its back the ls1 are famous for either lifter tap or piston slap...I believe mine is piston slap..
Did you ever get this fixed? That sounds very reminiscient of lifter knock to me. In fact I would have pulled the valve covers very quickly after hearing a noise such as that.
The cam really isn't very hard, and the rods are way easier. Would definitely be a good idea to swap springs/retainers too if you're going with a big cam setup! :)
idk if this will help you guys but we had a camaro that was knocking. turns out it had rotten gas and it bent all the pushrods. we changed the pushrods and eptied the tank and blew the lines out and it runs like new!!!!
does it get quiter as warmer or with a load ? These motor get piston slap and lifter knocks...some have had rod knock but you would know if it was a rod its really loud then...
I have a 2002 z28 that is making the same damn noise... it only has 48k miles on the engine. mine sounds like it's coming from the passenger head, sounds very light and faint, but sounds like a small deisel engine... any ideas?
Dude. Good luck. I've had a knocking sound comming from my lt1 for ever. I relpaced the lifters and it's still there. I'm thinkin mine might be an exhaust leak. but hell idk.
err...not "NOT filling" but air got in them somehow

This comment has received too many negative votes show
whatu should do is drop a 03-04 cobra engine in there then you should have some real power

how hard was installing the cam and rods-i think my 99 may have the same problem, and i'd like to get a more aggresive cam
