One of the best Thirds I have heard- it combines a great sense of structure with passion and lyricism to produce an equal of Furtwangler's great 1949 recording.
What is special here is that instead of being a muddy and turbid reading as is so often the case with Brahms, this is clean, clear, limpid, almost lyrical. A revelation.
I absolutely love this piece but I have the say that the sound quality is kind of radio-like but fully understandable...considering the time when recorded
Abbey Road studios eh! Weingartner was a masterful, yet rather literal, conductor. Like many conductors of another era, he was also a prolific composer.
While he strove for a literal reading of the music, many of his recordings (especially earlier ones before 1930) have highly flexible tempi compared to modern day recordings. His early recordings of Beethoven's 7th and 8th symphonies are a must-hear.
F.W...my hero, this and mozart #39, have been done to death, and NO-ONe can touch his readings...period.

I think the sound is quite good for a record from the 1930's.
