  • Alot of people seem to think that Mary-Anne is the ship, but I think she refers to the word "marian" witch means "sea of bitterness"

She kisses your lips, like chapped lips. But she will not take her dress off, meaning, perhaps, that the ocean will never be simple and blunt, but always mysterious and hidden, leaving the depths to the imagination.

  • I feel a hundred times better after singing "Mary Ann's a bitch" out loud. It's like stress relief. Wonder if there's a connection between this song and her other Mary Ann song.

  • i wanna know who dislikes this video??!?!?!

  • 10 People are Marianne!

  • "hooome sweet hoome... MARIANNE'S A BITCH!" I love the difference of tone XD !

  • i'm in love with this song & performance... MARRY-ANNE'S A BITCH!

  • Only regina can make the word bitch sound sweet , love her !

  • This song actually makes me laugh. Hearing her sing those words over and over again, it is comical. You gotta love Regina!

  • I'm a christian and I don't normally curse but I have to admit Mary-Anne really sounds like a bitch.

  • I like how Regina doesn't take an entire song to infer that she dislikes Mary-Ann. She openly comes out and confesses. A bold thing to do, I believe. That's definitely what sets Regina apart from other artists. She's bold, confident, and quirky. She makes you smile and feel from the beginning of the song to the end. REGINA SPEKTOR FTW!:D

  • you should learn the real story behind her songs. i googled it(marry ann todd lincoln). it is very interesting and regina is genius! :)

ps: marry ann is a free bitch baby ;)

  • @zeppepful Yeah, it really annoys me that every website has people so insistant in Mary Ann being the sea or the boat's name, when it's obvious, from the Kentucky reference, that it's Mary Ann Todd Lincoln.....I only heard her name thrown around for like a month back in highschool, so I don't know much about the story being told here....but if Regina says Mary Ann's a bitch, I'm on Team Regina. lol

  • Yeah sure like this shit

  • lindo lindo lindo...sem mais nada a dizer

  • Regina is my new favorite performer...and Maryanne's a BITCH!

  • the biggest smile in show business!

  • eloquent... hahaha

  • no, mary-ann's a bitch

  • no.mary anne is the sea

  • Mary-ann is the ship....

  • @Tom123Davis I think you are right. She's using it to mean the ship and to mean a real person though.

  • If more girls were like her, we'd be a happppier land. What a sweet gal.

  • delightful!

  • my name is mary ann, and i resent this song... because i love regina :(

  • bahahahahaha. but she loves you enough to write a song about you! :D

  • No one covers a Regina Spektor song like Regina Spektor ;)

  • tard

  • Yeah, Mary-Anne is pretty much a bitch.

  • alot of her music, is based on the bible and quotes from the bible and other books etc

her song "us" has quotes from the bible

  • i dont get it

  • Is Mary Ann really a bitch?

  • if regina says she is, than i guess so:)

  • never question THE regina spektor.

    haha ;)

  • Agreed.

  • This is SO cool! Thanks for uploading! :D

  • cool video, especially since it shows her hands playing it :)

  • but she will not take her dress off

  • MARRY ANNS A BITCH. i love her

  • we miss the girls back home-- home sweet homeeeeee

  • I love this song. She is so funny and the song is lyrically just so cool.

  • godd i'm so obsessed with herrrrrrr

  • We all know a Mary Ann who is a bitch. At least I do.

  • so many people tell me she sounds like a tori amos ripoff. um, she sounds nothing like tori amos. what, because she plays the piano too? and sings songs about a mary ann?

  • It's a weird dynamic, the female singer/piano player thing. You hear the same with Fiona Apple and Regina. I don't hear it all, Regina's music is way different, as is Fiona Apple's. Their are both unique artists in their own right. Tori Amos I'm not as familair with, so I can't say.

I will say this-- Regina's song, Twenty Years of Snow, does remind me of Bjork, a bit.

But, there's nothing wrong with being influenced by Bjork.

She is very much an innovator--this is what innovators do.

  • Agreed.I love this girl, but she isn't in the same league as Tori(sorry, just analyze the music of both ladies theory-wise, and who can argue--no one bitch about emotion etc, because if you can't find the emotion in Tori, you are not human.).I think she if she doesn't get bogged down with her record company trying to commercialize her and 'normalize' her too much, then she will do great things. Regardless of anything, she is quite a refreshing change from the bullshit that is popular on the radio

  • I love Tori Amos, but for some reason I always gravitate back to Regina. I think of Tori Amos as a cool style of music and some interesting songs, but too me with Regina each & every song is a whole new and clever thing all on it's own. She does have her own style too but I just never know what she's gonna do next. I don't mean this as an argument, just expressing myself as you did. I guess that's the cool thing about music and different tastes. We all get to have our own.

  • who is tori?

  • ur joking right?

u donno who tori amos is???

shes a veery famous alternative singer!!!

  • I think the comment 'who is tori?' doesn't mean the person doesn't know her. It's more like 'Tori who?' after hearing Regina. And nothing against Tori, cuz I love a lot of her music. But there's something about Regina that's in a far higher level. Tori's music is like 'wow, cool song'. This girl rips my heart out. P.S. - Cool user name. Funny :) Makes me think of things I don't think I should. :)

    RespeKt

  • well i gues ur right... i didnt think of that comment any other way... sorry fushigilady...

well thanks for the part about my nick...

i love tori too, but i think that she is just not so special like regina...

  • i'm also addicted to regina.

    åh. she's so fucking good.

i love her lyrics, her voice,

    her smile.

    reginaspektor<3

  • Wow.......really. This is impressive. I've never heard of her before. I love this!

  • man i got a look from the music teacher when i covered this song

    haha.

    i love er!!!

  • I know Mary Ann--she is, in fact a bitch.

    :}

  • waaaait did someone ask her (before the video started) if she would play a cover?! that's the only reason i can see that she would say "i'll play a cover of myself"

    eh?

  • @kandibearx3 the only reason is:

she is allowed to do whatever the fuck she wants :D

(i'm using a quote of her)

  • Mary Anne is a bitch ROFLROFLROFL

  • I wish i was at this gig!

I'm addicted to Regina. My mum gets so pissed cause i don't stop singing her music. :|

  • I have become addicted to her music as well. It is wonderful, and it always seems to make me smile.

  • could it be that Mary Ann (in this case) is the ship's name? I love this song

  • That's what I was thinking.. But I thought "she" was Mary Anne the prostitute - or whatever girl they were stuck with. Haha.

  • yeah I thought so too at first. and maybe it is. But she's got another song called mary ann. wonder if it's the same mary ann...? =)

  • Actually I've heard Mary Anne is supposed to be a personification in name and description of 'Marine' and reference/represent the the sea and how sailors' opinions of it change after they've been on it for some time.

  • Alternately, I've heard that Mary Anne/Marianne represents the Republic of France. Google it- pretty interesting.

  • Really? I've never heard that... I will google it. Thanks.

  • paraphrasing verses, i'd imagine the Kentucky was the ship. it probably sailed during the Civil War. and if it was meant to sail the sea, why'd they name it after landlocked state, instead of a coastal one...

Mary Ann Todd Lincoln was considered by many people, in her day, to be be a bitch.

the verse after that just sounds like the sailors lamenting a sub-par ship, where they don't get to do much, and they miss the girls back home. so they might as well place the blame at Mary Ann's feet.

  • Very good, I think you're right.

  • Yes I think you're on the right track w/ the Civil War idea. Mary Ann Todd Lincoln was from Kentucky, and lots of people in KY were strongly anti-union even though they didn't end up seceding. So that probably has something to do with it as well.

Also, the bit about them huddling "with [their] missiles" and "miss[ing] the girls back home" may have some sexual connotations: if you realize that they're stuck on a boat for x number of months without any women, missile could mean, well, you know.

  • I think it's funny that when she swears in an intreview we all get confused but in songs like this she swears throught the whole chorus and we are all like ok, Whatever!

  • I said hi to her outside The Glee Club in Birmingham... Opposite tesco's.

She went hi and smiled back. Beat THAT, sir.

Unless, of course, you actually saw her in concert. Then, just forget what i said.

    :P

  • oh im jealous! seriously! grrr...

  • This song always makes me smile! :)

  • i love her more than you all combined, and that should make you sad. such a big love and you left with just the essence of what i feel. hehe.

  • Regina rocks the pub

  • she makes the cutest little face expressions when she sings :]

    haha.

    i love the songg.

  • i luv her too maybe more than you

  • She uses the name mary ann alot in her songs! I just noticed it.

  • lol me too...why I wonder...hmm

  • because its her word for mary jane or weed

  • why is that?

  • Her music is realistic, pure, and simple. i live for regina's music!

  • Regina makes my days better ones

  • her music is so pure and she has the best voice i have ever heard in my life, her music makes me glad im alive:)

  • Is Mary Ann really a bitch?

  • Regina seems to be very confident that she is.

  • Most definitely. She's not to be trusted.

  • She's just simply amazing when she's live, isn't she? <3

  • why does everyone compare the two? they are beautiful artists in their own rite. tori is a living legend...regina is great too. what's the big deal??

and tori does definitle NOT suck. that is quite an immature comment.

  • MARY ANNE IS A BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ah, I love her, though some angles it seems like she has a mullet:)

  • she should do a duet with kate nash, that would be super cute :)

  • i would say she's fiona apple's twin sister...

  • Shes really original, and her songs either make me laugh, make me want to sing at the top of my lungs, or cry. Shes just that versatile

  • regina is much more playful in her songs/singing/and overall demeanor than tori is. i love them both!!

  • I love how she says Mary Anne's a biiiiittttccc....ITCHH

  • Why providing your kids with classical piano lessons isn't necessarily a waste of money!

  • i had piano lessons as a kid, cant remember shit.

im a bassist now, but i only play couse i want to, not becouse im forced into it like it was back then.

  • She is wonderful... I want to see her live...

I also want to marry her :P

  • No I do the Regina-a-a-aaa thing :P

I really hope to see her perform live one day!

  • It's so amazing that her voice is just as good live. It's hard for many performers to actually perform, but she has a natural talent for not only that, but creating these works of art in her lyrics. <3 you, Reggie!

  • I loooove her.

    Shes so amazing.

And no, shes not a tori amos clone.

    :)

  • Awh it's so cute, when she sings she's this commanding performer, and when she speaks she's so softly spoken and sweet! Almost shy. Awh. <3 her :)

  • Hahahaha! Regiiiina? Regiiiiiina! I do the same exact thing! Ahhh!!!

  • She's a Tori Amos clone, but she has undoubtedly more talent than most of the idiots in the music scene today.

  • If anyone thinks Regina is a "Tori Amos clone", then they obviously haven't listened to more than a couple of Regina's songs.

  • They can't have listened to Tori Amos much either. No offence to Tori, but her voice is nowhere near as good as Regina's (in my opinion).

  • Yeah, I agree. I love Tori to death, but Regina is my favorite. :)

  • Im Mary anne... I love the woman who sings this about me though

  • this woman is the best female singer and performer ever, or at least the best i've seen in a loooooooong loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time

  • if you think she's the best female singer ever, you obviously haven't heard any music created before the 1980s. you should look into that.

  • It's a comment of endearment, not a fact. Regina is amazing in her time (and in the future, music isn't really going anywhere) because Mary Ann is indeed a bitch and she keeps her boyfriends in porcupine gloves, in porcupine gloves (=])

  • mary ann makes me giggle. <3

  • is that the same mary ann that made her man wear porky pine gloves?

  • Yeah! shes a recurring character

    just like the gravediggers!

    reginas awesome!

  • shes pure talent.

im almost certain no other arist can sing this good live.

  • it dosnt matter that our anchor cant even reach the bottom of a bathtub.

  • Everytime I see the name Maryann I think of this song lol and I smile to myself

no offense to all the Maranns out there!

  • its the same for me but with regina...

whenever i see her name i start whispering reeegiiinaaaaa....reeeegiiinaaaaa...

    am i the only one?

  • reginaaaa... Regiiiiiinaaaaaaa

I totally do the same haha

  • lol

  • I love reginas voice [:

  • oh mary anne.. what a bitch she is

  • mary anne is a bitch. regina's right.

  • Bitchin!

  • very nice
