  • Noir Nation, coming this September to an e-reader near you. Find us on Youtube and Facebook. European editor: alan @ noirnation . com

  • great to know there are so many other Neo Noir films being made. I thought I was alone. just filmed a short called Battery Row. Thanks for the tips.

  • I really love this tutorial. I'm making film noirs myself, and you came up with some good obvious points I've never even thought of

  • 3:32 BEST LINE EVER DELIVERED!

  • it seems you like using rayman music for your noir films a the end. :P

  • It would have been better if it was shot in frame mode or 24p and given a slight grain effect using Magic Bullet film looks.

  • Touch of Evil, Sin City, The Maltese Falcon, yeaaah! Casablanca, yeah! The Thid Man, yeah! Sunset Bullevard, well, OK! And what about Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, Key Largo, Asphalt Jungle? Chinatown? Rennaissance? Well, kind'a Scifi, but still.

  • this is horribly done

  • you look like boris johnson

  • Hey, great video. Some nice lighting there. If you get the chance can you take a look at my film noir student film I made (it's called D.A) and let me know what you think. Thanks.

  • Batman and Sin City are not film noir- they are neo-noir. Film Noir is not just a style or a genre- but it is a movement that only exists in a certain time frame.

  • @SirCallan Noir isn't a timelocked style/movement

It's ridiculous to think that a person couldn't shoot a film in the same style today (see Retro.) or with the same, or very similar, political reasons. Surprisingly, style comes and goes and can be revisited at and point past it's conception, whilst politics stay the same, even if the players and conflicts differ

  • @ThePitofSidLord Film movements are locked into a certain period of time. If people create films with reference to the noir style they are creating neo-noirs. I disagree about revisiting style. You wouldnt see a director now a days create a film that is part of Itialian neo-realism

  • This doesn't look like film noir because it's filmed with a modern digital camera and without the equipment of the 40's. The analysis is still awesome.

  • if you like to see the cinema history watch *BIRTH OF CINEMA* in youtube and enjoy.

  • That was a miserable pile of fail at trying for film noir. No wonder 4MFS got cancelled.

  • I got to say, this doesn't look at all like film noir.

  • lol much better than the turkish videos :P

  • I love it!

  • lol DCshoes in a film noir. good shit.

  • If you're interested in seeing what footage looks like using this adapter search ABDavis and look for a short movie called "Open Doors" or click on my profile and find it on my favorites list. We used this adapter, a Nkon 50mm lens, a Canon Vixia HG20, and Final Cut Pro.

  • make more 4min film school videos!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great video, I'm definitely into this kind of thing.

  • what was the first song? playing when steve shot himself

  • @Graywhite12 it's from the iLife jingles

  • I like what ya did with the operation, but I still gots one question:

How do I know I can trust you?

  • I made a film noir! It's on my channel. It's called "In the Dark". If you like this kind of stuff, you'll love my movie :)

  • Today I have been watching three of my all time favourite Joan Crawford movies: Mildred Pierce, Sudden Fear, Female on the Beach... not... THAT was tension and lighting! I bow before thee, fab crews!

  • nice try :)

  • So, this video is teaching amateurs to make a generic, cliche noir film instead of a unique vision? Great.

  • @Freddirector I think you're missing the point entirely. There aren't that many examples of film noir being made now as used to be. Think of this as an bare bones introduction. Hopefully it will lead "amateurs" to go out and watch some classics. You have to know what the genre consists of before you can attempt to make one. Knowing that doesn't mean that you make a "generic" or "cliched" movie.

  • I'm in love with his Femme Fatale

    Love Film Noir

  • Most of all you need a good plot. E.g The Big Sleep.

  • It's not "digital noir" or "video tape noir" or "Super 8 noir" it's FILM noir. That's why you can never get that look right because you'd have to use a type of film that's no longer manufactured.

  • .... and because nobody can light anymore!

  • Its true even that guy did some extreamly shite lighting the Key is Black and white NO GRAYS!!!! chrisp shadows

  • You're right. 35mm film is the way Noirs deserve to be shot

  • Comment removed

  • @MontagTheMagician No, it's not the film stock, it's the story, and a certain style. Generally one derived from German expressionism. Blood simple, by the Cohen Brothers is very good film noir, so is Chinatown which came out much later than most of the films people associate with the genre.

  • @NelsonStJames There's no such thing as a film noir after the 50s. It doesn't exist. It's like saying there's a NEW Italian Renaissance painting. No, there's not. Nobody knowingly made a film noir, it was a phenomenon that unfolded naturally based on events leading up to that time period. Cohen Brothers are good and so is Chinatown. They're not film noirs. The look of the film is what gave it the name "noir" in the first place.

  • @MontagTheMagician I guess that depends on the definition you are using of film noir, which I define as a genre. Many films were shot up to the time that the Maltese Falcon by Houston came out (including two earlier versions of the book), but none of those are considered noir cinema. It was the themes that made it noir. To me it's like saying that there are no Westerns after High Noon. That's why I'd classify a film like L.A. Confidential as noir, and Miami Vice as a police drama.

  • @NelsonStJames Also to defend my argument that it wasn't the film stock specifically that designated a film as noir, and still keeping with your point that no film noir films were made after the 50's. Hitchcock's Vertigo is considered film noir yet it was shot in color. Also there is A Kiss Before Dying shot in 1956.

  • @NelsonStJames You proved my point. Little Caesar is not a film noir but it falls under the same "genre" as a film noir. It's a style of film making, but it's NOT a genre. The genre it falls under is crime drama, but it's a certain variation classified after the fact. That's why if you made a movie now with an all black cast it couldn't be considered "blaxploitation". You could try to call it that but everybody'd be like "yeah, right."

  • @MontagTheMagician Good point.

  • check out my first film noir called Up in Smoke!

  • Wish you would have given more instruction, rather than making a gratuitous bad film.

  • Watch it once more, there are instructions all through this. It's much more useful to see the tips in use than to have a boring step by step narrative, I reckon.

    Great video, thanks!

  • Film Noir is probably the best genre out there.. I am currently working on my own that will be epic!! (or at least pretty damn good)

Great video as always Indy Mogul!

  • How is it going your film noir movie now that it's 5 months past that you made that coment? :)

  • It takes a while to write the script. I'm still working on some issues in the first draft. and in the mean time I am getting the equipment to shoot it. I'm not trying to rush this. Plus I go to school 6 hours a day and I have a job. But I'm hoping to start shooting late July or early August. It will happen I promise! :D

  • Yes, it takes a while I know :) I'm a filmmaker myself so I was curious how's it going. Yes, you better not try to rush it ;) best wishes

  • Cool! Thanks!

  • I learned a lot from this and thanks for doing it.

  • '. . . are they . . . girl detectives, or what?'

I liked it. Good explanations, accompanied by film examples. Plus, it was funny.

  • HAHAHAH cool story, bro

    5 STAR!

  • asdfef df asdf

  • lol this is so good! everything I've learnt in two months all summarized in 4 minutes!

  • Hey Steve, I have potato salad

  • Hey - i love film noir - I even made one once. This video was awesome!

  • wow lol The same music at the begening was used in the movie King of the Lost World. It probably royalty free music-which mean the movie was extremely low budget.

  • what is the music from the first part of this vid?

  • Got any good suggestions for soundtrack? I find it's quite hard to find the right stuff.

  • I highly recommend the soundtrack for the videogame Mafia. We used it and use it for our film noir. Very effective!

  • ...which is also copyright infringement...

  • I am aware of that. However remember that copyright infrigement only applies propely when showing the film for profit. Plus I doubt that Take 2 would seek us up for having made something using music from their game...

  • portishead. portishead. portishead.

  • bohren & der club of gore.

    sort of dark, noir-ish jazz..

some portishead could be good as well.

  • This is awesome!!!! Dont stop creating these!

  • dude just no, watch the Maltese Falcon or Casablanca, or Blade Runner

  • @MonkeyWrench4269101 Casablanca is not film noir try Double Indemity instead

  • @MonkeyWrench4269101 Blade Runner is AWESOME!

  • max payne is not film noir...it is just not...never mentiion it.

  • I just shot a noir film for uni, fuck I wish I had this before I shot it lol

  • brilliant! this really gave me some good ideas for a film noir script, thanks!

    ^_^

  • thanks mahn i think is will help me in understanding more of noir

  • You could of also added that the main character gets into situations that he/she doesn't want to be in.Or that the ending isn't always a happy one

  • very helpful, thank you!

  • Next year me and my brother are going to make a full lenght flim noir.

  • Hope it goes well for you:)

  • Thanks.

  • This reminds me of Bill Nye the Science Guy

  • steve dosnt smoke, he lights it but he dosnt draw back

  • what music did you use where can i find film noir music??

  • I've noticed subtle piano and violin is good in film noir.

  • @darkfox404 Don't forget a trumpet!

  • @darkfox404 or saxophone

  • @darkfox404 and some saxophone tops it off

  • ooooh! awesome! gotta try that!

  • you really shouldn't smoke D:

  • i know

  • He was doing it for the effect. Film Noir was primarily active in the 1950's when EVERYONE 12 and up was puffing there brains out. So incidentily most of the characters in Film Noir movies, smoked.

Don't you notice he never smokes in any other video? You people are so naive.

  • ........

    OK?

  • Ok? I'm saying whats the big deal if he smokes one cigarette?

  • Wow! This was awesome however batman is not film noir. The main character may have flaws but he is an indestructible superhero and that kinda disqualifies it...

  • it's not necasserily the characters in the film, but the way is it shot, whats on set and how it is edited.

for example, there is alot of use of smoke in batman, for instance when his parents are shot, it is in monochrome and you can see a figure with a gun wavering in the dark smoke arising from the gutter. The reason Batman doesn't come off as film noir is becuase it was originally a comic, so it has all the elements of an action and adventure. Tim Burton is the only reason batman is so good.

  • If you are only talking about the look of the film then sure, batman can be considered noir. However, limiting noir to a "look" is cutting the genre short. While not a rule, film noir usually has a main character that "descends into hell" figuratively of course.

The look of the film can greatly vary, Chinatown is considered noir...

  • Best of Indie Mogule as of date.

  • FOUR MINUTE FILM SCHOOL IS THE SHIZ!

  • the time wasn't 4 minutes. it was 3.51.

  • i enjoyed this 5/5

  • Film noir without smoking is like sex without an orgasm, its okay but it just aint the same!

  • when they don't smoke, they should do at least heroin... it was around back then and had the same sleazy connotations it has today if not worse... A tragic 'dope fiend'...

  • Film noir without smoking is like sex without an orgasm, its okay but it just aint the same!

  • Steve Nelson SMOKES???????!!!!!!

  • ffs

  • Thumbs up for Film Noir, Thumbs Down for Steve Smoking, and THUMBS WAY UP for the woman!!!

  • you do know that the smoke could've been a digital effect, it'd be especiallly easy in black and white. Look at 4:09, it looks fake.

  • true, I did notice that.

  • I wonder what music was used around the :35 mark as Steve crossed the street?

  • he did he have to smoke?!

  • hey guys, 4 minute film school is great. I'm currently working on a horror movie and I was wandering if you had any tips on giving my movie that scary effect? just an idea for one of you videos. thx

  • audio audio audio!!!!!! make sure you have a good score and sound effects.

  • Couldn't agree more, audio audio audio!!!!

Other than that POV shots work well, just don't go all Cloverfield on your film. But the best piece of advice I can give regarding horror, things are much scarier when you DON'T show it. Let your audiences imaginations run with it instead of throwing it in their faces. Hitchcock was the best at this.

  • i have a disc The Cinematic volume in the Orchestral Series of Sony Sound Series it is number 3 designed for video production kick ass disc for dramatic music.

  • The Blair Witch Project proved that very well....

  • best yet!

  • Are they girl detectives? BEST LINE EVER!!!!!

  • Ummm... I'm all up for a but of fun but I'd prefer information in a more upfront kind of way. I didn't really get much out of this.

  • This was a REALLY GOOD EPISODE. I really found it very informative and i couldn't tell whether I should think it's funny, or sad.

    FAT BUTT! AHHHHHH!

  • steve this is a good episode but... you're smoking...?!

  • i want to be in your vid. haha great video.

  • Good episode, Steve!

  • great episode

  • Yay, I love film noir! Great episode.

  • I don't really like film noir, they're kinda colorless!

  • This is a pretty big subject to explain in just four minutes, but I think it was still pretty informative.

  • From what I recall from my Multi-Cultural Film, the film noir style took up mainly from the Hard Boiled Detective stories that were all the rage at the time. In fact, the term "Film Noir" came into existance after WWII because at the time these films started to be produced (during the war), Nazi-Occupied countries wouldn't allow American films to be shown. And the term actually comes from the French. BTW, excellent video guys, definately covers all of film noir in a short amount of time. 5*s

  • I don't think that was counter-clockwise at the end. sweet tips though.

  • Please Indy Mogul, make more specials like this.

  • Yay Potato Salad!

  • his face arruins the magic of film noir! hehe just a joke

  • aha, hes wearing skateshoes

  • I really like these 4 minute film schools. they're my favorite show yet. That's probably because i really dig steve's humor.

    kkeep it up!

  • OK now that add about selfish clicks is getting annoying...

but these 4 minute film school things r actually getting better instead of seemingly pointless filler :P yay! improvement! XD thumbs up

  • i actually went onto youtube for a video about making film noir ! and here it was, great job guys honesly its awesome .

  • One element - film noir very often (if not always) has water as an important theme was left out from your 4 minutes.

  • this is probably one of the best i have seen!

The Black and White really is what makes it go, y'know! Imagine if it were not in black and white, it may just be an average 4 minutes film school...

  • this is probably one of the best i have seen!

The Black and White really is what makes it go, y'know! Imagine if it were not in black and white, it may just be an average 4 minutes film school...
