from reading all your comments i have come to the conclusion it must be a poor song.Funny so many have covered it including some of the greatest rock n roll bands ever.give the man credit for writing something that so many people enjoy.if any of you negatives out there can write a more popular song,i'd love to hear it.
Since Gene wrote this song, I salute him for his version. Wrote and sang it. Does not matter if he had a hit with it. I greatly admire his singing, song writing, and, most of all, longevity. Also, a member of the Brill Building gang. Salute big time Gene:)
Though I enjoy listening to Gene Pitney's own hits I think he missed the boat on this one and shoul dhave left it alone. I posted my own cover of it and while I am not a pro adn I am not trying to sound conceited, I think mine sounds better.
@CooleGuy Hmmm well, while not a Pitney original, isn't like he was off key. I agree, there are times when only the original will do. Of course now I will see if I can find your video, and then I will get back to you and tell you if you were being conceited or not.
@CooleGuy Gary you do know Gene wrote this? But I agree, it may not have been a huge hit had not Ricky Nelson recorded it. Gene said he thought Nelson's version was primo. Same with Rubber Ball, and He's a Rebel. They may not have had the same impact had he kept them for himself. His huge hits were written just for him, by the likes of Hal & Burt. Mann and Weil. His voice required very sophisticated music.
@Tonithenightowl ... It is strange and ironic how thru time many song writers could write songs that were hits for others but not for themselves. Kris Kristofferson was a prime example of that. VA24541 bashed me and said I needed hearing aids but the other comments seem to support my opinion. I am not saying it was a disaster, just saying it wasn't his best performance. I have songs that I have done that I would rather not let anyone hear yet others say they sound just fine... to each his own.
@ezekielwahwah His record sales would tend to contradict your 'wise' comments, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Like in mine and I would think most people you come into contact with, you are a dickhead, man!!!!
Gene wrote three songs which would become Top 10 hits - for other artists: the song we're hearing here, "He's A Rebel," and "Rubber Ball" which he wrote with Aaron Schroeder (under his mother's name - A. Orlowski). Gene also wrote a great little tune - "Today's Teardrops" - which both Roy Orbison and Rick Nelson recorded.
Only his first Top 40 hit - "I Wanna Love My Life Away" - did Gene write himself.
very nice version!

I'll agree with tonithenigthtowl. Pitney may have written it but the combination of Ricky Nelson and James Burton put it over the top.
But that also doesn't take anything away from the Rockville Rocket he will always have his place in the ground base of Rock and Roll

Had tickets to see Gene Pitney on tour at the Colston Hall in Bristol,
but he died the night before after a show in Cardiff, had seen him
a couple of times before and loved all his hits. Have to say, much prefer
the Ricky Nelson version of this song.
So was one night away from seeing him on that tour, 24 hours from Bristol.

@ezekielwahwah Yes well you're allowed to sound anyway you like if you write the song. Slimy and viscid is very harsh.

@hirdy6
Also the CCR version is better. Sorry for the harshness. :-)

Fuck, you got "Elvis Presley - Sentimental Me" among your favorites lol, what's harsher than that? Just about anything. AHAHAHAH
Oh and by the way, Elvis was a clown. The real king of rockabilly was and will always be the great Eddie Cochran, man.
