What are the other pieces of hardware other than the ASR, and what exactly are their functions. Obviously we have what looks like a SCSI zip drive, and a record player, but are there only specific models that interface with the ASR, or is it preference? What about the third piece at the top right? Any good resources for absolute beginners?
@kingzeta The third piece of equipment is a phono preamp. My Facebook page has a notes section wtih a list of websites and notes on sampling. That would be the best resource that I could offer you along with the rest of my YouTube videos.
Really dope and creative...it's like making your own digital mellotron kinda, infinite possibilities with this...these videos are great because it shows people that they can design they're own sound and actually sound original!!
I've been rockin the ASR 10 for over a decade. I always learn new things about it. It took me a long time to get into the synthesis part of it because the menus were a little daunting being as they don't have parameter names (release, attack, decay, etc.). But once you memorize your parameters you will have people asking what synth you own.
@skapoosh Thanks man! I'm gland you like it. The turntable is a Stanton T.60. It's a entry level beltdrive turntable but for the price it's great for sampling.
This video sealed the deal for me. I was on the fence about an ASR 10 that was buried in my local classifieds. I watched this a couple of times and went for it. Turned out to be a great score. SCSI, 16 megs, expander, skb case. Excellent price too. I went to the local good will and snagged a zip drive for $6.
I now have my daw and a host of other synths routed directly at the asr so I can sample from any of a dozen source.
Thanks for the videos (subscribed!); very, very good stuff!

hey, I really like how you use the ASR 10, I bought one a few days ago and want to ask if you could make a tutorial how to make a whole beat with a sample where you explain step by step
Nice video bro! I wanted to know if there are any other alternatives than the Zip Drive? I have been using it about 10 years and looking for other ways to save files.
love the video man,i am starting up in producing hip hop beats, and only really know the basics, if you dont mind i was wondering if i ever have a question i could ask you, would help me dearly, peace
Very nice video. But although the ASR10 is a great instrument (I never messed with it but I think I know enough about gear to jugde it :)) its more the man before the machine. TDS, you're one of those people that know what to do and how. Respect to you for sharing your knowledge on your vids!
Hey man. I have been enjoying your videos for some time now and I finally decided to leave a comment. I have two EPS 16+ and just I sold my ASR 10 to a friend. Watching this vid makes me miss my ASR a little but I just wasn't using at as much as my 16+. I really liked all the effects, audio tracks, hd disks, stereo sampling and all but the screen characters were going out and I was always more comfortable on the 16. In 2007 there were hardly any videos of Ensoniq let alone 16+
I'm sorry I love talking gear, especially Ensoniq. In my opinion the ASR 10 and EPS 16 were pretty similar as far as sample synthesis. I didn't notice too many differences. The ASR felt a little cheaper built compared to it predecessors, although it had more capabilities. I would really like to experiment with a Kurzweil K2000 to test out the V.A.S.T. Any experiences? I enjoy a lot of the beats that you've posted in your videos. I will have to post some 16+ videos on here sometime too.
@EsarPeesar Hi EsarPeesar, Yeah the K2000 is an unsung hero. Eventhough it's a hybrid synth/sampler it's extremely powerful and it also reads Ensoniq files too.
@TheDaydreamSound I noticed you had an mv-8000. I have one also. Do you still have the k2000? If so can you make a vid demonstrating it's synthesis power? It'll be cool to see what it's capable of, with someone into hip-hop/instrumental music like myself. If you had to choose between the asr, and the k2000, which would you choose and why? Thanks.
@TheReasonableLogic Thanks for the comment man! Good question! The MV-8000 and the K2000 belong to friends for mine. The K2000 is a very powerful synth/sampler and was ahead of it's time. If I had to choose between the two I would still prefer to use the ASR 10, simply because I like to keep my synthesizers and samplers seperate. When I use a sampler I prefer to have no internal sounds present, just a blank slate. I also enjoy the sound of the ASR 10 over the sound of the K2000.
@TheDaydreamSound Thanks for the rapid response, I like "Sampled Drums Part 8", it's a cool track. I own an MV-8000, and an E-MU E6400 Ultra. I'm not really a collector or gear, I'm just looking for that last crucial piece to complete my set-up. The two I've came across that I'm now considering are the ASR-10, and the K2000, and now I'm stuck. Guess I got to do more research before I make a decision. If I have any questions regarding the ASR, am I free to PM you? Thanks a lot friend. Peace.
Your such a music nerd! It's awesome! I have the ASR-10 Rack, might try this out. I also have the ESQ rack as well, love the workflow of the old Ensoniq samplers, much easier to edit on then some of my Akai gear.

damn that sound around 6:00 is very dreamy..is this possible on something like the mpc1000? would you recommend the asr10 or another ensoniq sampler?

@marillo18 Thanks man! You would be able to do this with any professional sampler.

To be honest this is the most interesting sampling tutorial i've come across with.
Fantastic!!
And excuse me if it has been asked b4, but what's the name of this turntable?
It looks very solid...
Thanks!
