Many, many years ago I was flipping channels and saw the Chief perform his dance. I was awe struck. It was a thing of beauty. Culture in a sports stadium. Who'da thunk?
I just learned that the Chief no longer dances and I am saddened by that. In their quest for political correctness soon, those that seek to raise consciousness for the Red Man will simply relegate him to a minor footnote in the White Man's history books. What a shame.
How can you say the chief was an idiotic racist symbol when it used by the university to try and honor and respect the native american culture. Somehow your comment just doesn't make sense. And to all those who support the chief. Yes. We Must Never Give Up. LONG LIVE THE CHIEF
The Chief man be gone for now, but he will always live in the hearts of Illini fans. We must never give up on him and do everything we can to bring him back.
The CHIEF will always live on in our hearts. The University will see many negative repercussions for stripping us of such an honored symbol. The Chief isn't a racist symbol; he is actually a major piece in the Illini quilt. Rather than singling out one race, he joins many together as one, the Illini Nation! We are the Illini and we want our Chief! Hear us!
This is us. This is the University of Illinois. It's Champaign-Urbana. Even though they took the cheif away, he'll never be gone, because there are too many of us to keep him alive.
The Illini thing must be someone dressing up like an indian and doing a fake dance trying to act like one. I am Native American and I am glad to see the Chief go for many reasons. But in this comment, that is no disrespect to you, the fans of Illinois, and the University of Illinois.
Soonerborn, have you seen a FSU football game? Are you equally offended? How politically correct does a nation have to be? It is an Illini thing. The Chief will always live in our hearts.
thanks chiefillinois! couldnt have put it better myself! i sure miss seeing the illinois games since i'm not there anymore but i still pull for the fighting illini!
Thank you for posting this. I would have given anything to have seen it live. As someone with Native American heritage, and as a Champaign native and a U of I alumn, I think the Chief is a symbol of pride and honor, not just for our university, but also for the state's Native American history. Hail to the Chief forever. CHIEF!!!!
That's really sad that such a huge tradition had to die. I really don't find what is so offensive and wish the world wasn't so dramatically P.C. all the time.
my god no wonder you guys can't win about anything you to worried about bring back native americans
