Qualcuno diceva che non aveva la voce adatta al alcuni ruoli io dico allora chiudiamo i teatri d'opera! Bando alla nostalgia ma più passa il tempo più, purtroppo sento la Sua mancanza.
Goodness! Versions I've seen of several tenors but this one is the best I've soon so far. Not only because of the great sining of Pavarotti (which we all know and agree upon), but for his command on recitation and phrasing. Pavarotti was a great singer who could "tell" the lyrics in a way that they made sense and this is a great example. While others would focus on acting or even singing, Pavarotti ALWAYS added "sense" to his recitation. One can feel the commas and periods in his speech. GREAT!

I would like to add that i find it trully pathetic that majority of opera lovers are stuck to old singers performances and tend to praise them,(Mario Del Monaco i.e. for this aria) while there are contemporary singers who CREATE MASTERPIECES OUT OF THE SAME PARTS but refuse to recognise it...opera these days is MUCH MORE EXCITING AND MEANINGFUL than in 50's!
As obviously great as he is, this is a piece that is tricky. It requires either a canon or a bird who can spin out pianos that sound like fortes. Because of a reliance on forte he can sing it but it is not his best and not up to the best of Gigli, Corelli, del Monaco, Giacomini or Domingo. It is a wonderful show piece and he does it well. He does not look well here and unlike a concert it does not show him at his best. Still remarkable though.
Opera would be poorer without him.......I cannot imagine him not being there.....my life is richer for his appearance, he was a matchless ethereal artist

E poi, una piccola curiosità : perché non mi fa un breve elenco dei super-tenoroni del passato da cui, secondo lei, ci sarebbe tanto da imparare ? Ho idea che lei sia uno di quei delmonachiani invasati per i quali esiste solo il buon vecchio Mario ( che io ADORO, e ci tengo a precisarlo ) e tutto il resto è nulla. Bravo, bravo, continui così ! Quando capirà quanto difficle sia cantare allora si ricrederà. Saluti.
@flavikio : Di Stefano era ENORMEMENTE inferiore a Pavarotti in senso tecnico e il fatto che dopo 10 anni si sia sfasciato la voce lo dimostra ; Bergonzi dagli anni '70 in poi non aveva più acuti ed era letteralmente INASCOLTABILE ; Tagliavini, con i suoi falsettini e falsettoni, era a dir poco RIDICOLO nei ruoli spinti ( vedi Cavaradossi ) ; tra i baritoni aggiungerei Cappuccilli, Zancanaro e Manuguerra. Grandissima la Tebaldi, ma il pathos della Callas è superiore.

Giuseppe Verdi,come pure altri grandi,hanno scritto l'opera per il popolo non,per le persone colte come Lei,le quali,vanno magari in teatro con lo spartito e vanno ripetendo tutto quello che gli altri dicono,per paura di essere in controtendenza.
A me Pavarotti,non è mai piaciuto.Lei,se lo tenga strettissimo e lo osanni sempre.
Considering he is 61, I think he sounds good. Notice that the voice itself is still intact, however, as with all aging singers the musculature used to support the sound is diminished. I would still rather listen to this performance than most others.
A fine and moving performance. Pavarotti was never one of nature's Cheniers. For me at least, Corelli OWNED the role. But at this stage in his career, Pav had sufficient vocal thrust to make his performance satisfying, at least on video. His voice is a little slower and more labored than in his prime, but he still sings this demanding aria very well. And Pav here seems completely committed to the character at hand -- he did not always appear so earlier --
I don't think he care for what you all say or write about him. He still IS simply the best and in his "poor" state he sang better then the others in their "best"!!! Evvivo Luciano! Evvivo per sempre, la voce d'oro e dell'anima Italiana!!! God bless his soul in rest, as I am very sure he sings among the greatest, lassu, privo del Dio.
He's struggling here. His intonation isn't perfect, which is somewhat strange, as his intonation was almost always perfect. His first B flat is fabulous, he just pings it out as part of the line. The second is pretty poor in comparison, he breaks the line to attack it directly and tries to add more weight to it than his voice would permit. The result is not pretty.
Beautiful. Sure he is getting old, but the simple fact that he still sings this better at his age than most any other tenors, is ridiculous. And expected! Gotta love him though.
For me he seems to stab at the text. It is a declamatory piece for sure, but it should also flow. Try Domingo for the right pulse. And Lanza recorded it on a good day.
Nessuno contestazione : chiunque se ne intenda almeno un po' di lirica non ha nessun tipo di dubbio nel riconoscere l'immensa grandezza artistica di Pavarotti ( perlomeno fino ai primi anni '90 ). Solida tecnica, ottima dizione, bel timbro, notevole estensione vocale, versatilità ( pur essendo un tenore lirico leggero ottenne ottimi risultati anche in un repertorio lirico puro, lirico spinto e, occasionalmente, drammatico ) : per conto mio uno dei più grandi tenori mai esistiti. @flavikio : lei evidentemente deve avere serie difficoltà nella comprensione di quanto si scrive. Io ho parlato solo ed unicamente di tecnica vocale, e Pavarotti di tecnica ne aveva da vendere. Tra le altre cosa è abbastanza risaputo che Pavarotti è stato, assieme ad Alfredo Kraus, il più grande interprete di tutto il repertorio lirico e lirico leggero ( Elisir, Figlia del reggimento, Lucia, Boheme, Rigoletto ... ). P.S. : Del Monaco era un tenore drammatico, Pavarotti lirico.

Although it is difficult to believe the French poet in the midst of a "chic" party like that, has gone with that unkempt hair and beard. Pavarotti should have been more careful there. He's more suited to Jean Valjean in his poor days...
When he is on he is on!! I love his singing so much. People can debate who is best for this reason or that. It comes down to personal taste. For me, just for me, he is my favorite.
It's charming how he slightly loses his way at the end and has to look at the screens at the side of the stage to check what the conductor is doing. Bravo maestro!

With this CHÉNIER the Met was celebrating tht 75th anniversary of the premiere of this opera in the company, in 1921, sung by Gigli, Muzio and Danise. I like Pavarotti in this "Improvviso", in voice, interpretation and style. Good B flats, the last one attacked directly as Giordano allowed Gigli to do. If we have a Chénier capable to sing in this glorious way I don't care if he's a lyric or spinto tenor. Giordano loved Gigli's interpretation and conducted some of his performances in the role.

Even though he's truly a lyric tenor and ths role was not originally intended for such a voice it nevertheless moves me... The actual sound of his voice is pleasing whatever he sings!
I don't like this interpretation. Corelli, del Monaco, Domingo and even Carreras captured the meaning and emotion of this aria. Pavarotti in this is ok.
Much warmer and "morbide" than del Monaco. He's a POET not Rhadames after all--he's a softie--and Luciano captures that beautifully. I don't know what emotions MDM is projecting; he's just projecting his very loud sound, without any real soul in it. (I think this same quality might have worked well for his Otello.)
He waited to sing this role on stage at an older age because he thought his voice was going to be darker and more mature for the more dramatic role of Chenier. He was right.
I have a friend who once listened to him in a rehearsal with public and mentioned he was singing with his back facing the public but his voice sounded as if he wasn´t. I´d say that is a well focused voice that carries well in theaters.
He hits the perfect technic with that superb italian voice he had, and as it happened to many people (including myself) because of his great charisma, one got immediately in love with him. Bravo Pavarotti!!
However, his voice is too lyrical, reaches some spinto colours because of his age, but needs more barytonal-dramatic tessitura at the end in ¨del mondo, aníma e vita¨.
Anyway, I agree he was one of the best singers in history. Descansa en paz amigo.
A late-career Pavarotti here in superb, full voice. Spectacular singing from one the absolute finest of the trade. I find his normally less-than-inspirational acting quite good here - it is mostly facial expression, but i like it. So much missed.
Maybe he's not a good actor, but forget that, maybe he's not the best Andrea Chénier, forget that too, but who can sing in that way, wiht taht magic voice thay only could be given by God? He' the best.
To the contraire..:P I think his acting was excellent! I've heard he wasn't a great actor too but I beg to differ..'his large size apparently limited his mobility on stage'... His acting was awesome in 'e lucevan le stelle'.. go chk it out :) Although, I think Mario Lanza had the greatest tenor voice ever, if not the greatest tenor career(by some standards)
The voice was a big lyric, but his technique was so solid that it put the Spinto rep like this easily within his reach. I never got to hear him live, but I can tell that it carries well because of the focus and efficiency of it. It's pure Bel Canto. He was vulnerable and emotive, other tenori whose voices are bigger like Corelli or DelMonaco were not as communicative or open as Luciano. I wish he had taken better care of himself too.
I did hear him live and unmiked in a theater that's not particularly kind to singers, and you're exactly right about the voice's focus and carrying quality:) --

Pavarotti was very talented but prematurely destroyed his career through overeating. For a number of years he was too heavy and too weak to engage in normal acting on stage. Eventually his poor physical condition affected his singing, as you can hear in this video.
¿Han dicho por ahí abajo que Pavarotti tenía voz pequeña? Lo que le faltaba era mala leche para interpretar a este personaje. Actúa bien, canta genial, pero da la sensación de que no se entrega. Carreras, a pesar de sus agudos insuficientes, hace un Chenier mucho más creíble. Si mezclásemos las virtudes de ambos tendríamos un Chenier tan bueno como Gigli o del Mónaco.
Me gusta más el Chenier de Placido Domingo, que el de Carreras y Pavarotti. Mi preferido es el de Mario del Monaco o el de Gigli. Diferentes voces y estilos pero interpretaciones muy buenas. El de Corelli tambien es muy bueno
para cuando a Domingo le dio por hacer su Chenier ya no tenía, por desgracia, suficientes recursos vocales. ¿has oído a Pertile? no es un prodigio de expresividad, pero lo hace realmente bien
I never talk about his acting,I just say that the role is a bit heavy for his voice. Otherwise for me the Maestro is just the greastest artist I have ever heard singing and acting,he is a full lyric artist.He is the best . Thank you to Luciano for all this marvelous moment. But for he is still here with us .

Considering he is 61, I think he sounds good. Notice that the voice itself is still intact, however, as with all aging singers the musculature used to support the sound is diminished. I would still rather listen to this performance than most others.

A fine and moving performance. Pavarotti was never one of nature's Cheniers. For me at least, Corelli OWNED the role. But at this stage in his career, Pav had sufficient vocal thrust to make his performance satisfying, at least on video. His voice is a little slower and more labored than in his prime, but he still sings this demanding aria very well. And Pav here seems completely committed to the character at hand -- he did not always appear so earlier --

I don't think he care for what you all say or write about him. He still IS simply the best and in his "poor" state he sang better then the others in their "best"!!! Evvivo Luciano! He's struggling here. His intonation isn't perfect, which is somewhat strange, as his intonation was almost always perfect. His first B flat is fabulous, he just pings it out as part of the line. The second is pretty poor in comparison, he breaks the line to attack it directly and tries to add more weight to it than his voice would permit. The result is not pretty.

For me he seems to stab at the text. It is a declamatory piece for sure, but it should also flow. Try Domingo for the right pulse. And Lanza recorded it on a good day.

Nessuno contestazione : chiunque se ne intenda almeno un po' di lirica non ha nessun tipo di dubbio nel riconoscere l'immensa grandezza artistica di Pavarotti ( perlomeno fino ai primi anni '90 ). Solida tecnica, ottima dizione, bel timbro, notevole estensione vocale, versatilità ( pur essendo un tenore lirico leggero ottenne ottimi risultati anche in un repertorio lirico puro, lirico spinto e, occasionalmente, drammatico ) : per conto mio uno dei più grandi tenori mai esistiti. fuori ruolo no e' ottimo, anzi a volte fa ridere, certo meglio di molti altri perche' tecnica dizione estensione ci sono, (poco volume questo si... cantava amplificato nei teatri) (peccava nel ritmo non era buon conoscitore della musica, non sapeva prorpio leggerla) quindi gia' manca qualcosina per definirlo il piu' grande. saluti

E' la verità da me,constatata da tempo.
Molti,amano Pavarotti perchè,non conoscono la Lirica.
Altri,(la maggior parte),per puro campanilismo regionale.
Pavarotti,vive in una logica mediatica a suo favore,dentro la quale,si può dire solo bene e guai,se qualcuno tenti di criticarlo.

Purtroppo,ho studiato solamente 5 anni (Chitarra flamenca).
Ritornando al discorso Pavarotti,anche i cantanti che sembra che cantino bene da un punto di vista tecnico possono risultare inespressivi perchè non hanno la loro libertà espressiva ed è limitata da preoccupazioni tecniche.

@flavikio : lei evidentemente deve avere serie difficoltà nella comprensione di quanto si scrive. Io ho parlato solo ed unicamente di tecnica vocale, e Pavarotti di tecnica ne aveva da vendere. Tra le altre cosa è abbastanza risaputo che Pavarotti è stato, assieme ad Alfredo Kraus, il più grande interprete di tutto il repertorio lirico e lirico leggero ( Elisir, Figlia del reggimento, Lucia, Boheme, Rigoletto ... ). P.S. : Del Monaco era un tenore drammatico, Pavarotti lirico.

With this CHÉNIER the Met was celebrating tht 75th anniversary of the premiere of this opera in the company, in 1921, sung by Gigli, Muzio and Danise. I like Pavarotti in this "Improvviso", in voice, interpretation and style. Good B flats, the last one attacked directly as Giordano allowed Gigli to do. If we have a Chénier capable to sing in this glorious way I don't care if he's a lyric or spinto tenor. Giordano loved Gigli's interpretation and conducted some of his performances in the role.

I read some of the comments and I wonder: Gigli was an important exponent of this role. Was he a dramatic tenor?
Are these classifications really necessary? This role is for Pavarotti or not?
If some of you like a more baritonal sound with a fixed upper register or with less color and more "shouting" and belting, then it's your opinions.
I personally like this interpretation and I'm not afraid to admit it...
These comments about Corelli od Del Monaco being better are not necessary.

Much warmer and "morbide" than del Monaco. He's a POET not Rhadames after all--he's a softie--and Luciano captures that beautifully. I don't know what emotions MDM is projecting; he's just projecting his very loud sound, without any real soul in it. (I think this same quality might have worked well for his Otello.)

In this aria people think chenier is weak, and tried to damage him. Then he show his strength that comes from his heart.
Giordano reflects perfectly his complex personality, and instructed del Monaco how to reflect this.

I have a friend who once listened to him in a rehearsal with public and mentioned he was singing with his back facing the public but his voice sounded as if he wasn´t. I´d say that is a well focused voice that carries well in theaters.

A late-career Pavarotti here in superb, full voice. Spectacular singing from one the absolute finest of the trade. I find his normally less-than-inspirational acting quite good here - it is mostly facial expression, but i like it. So much missed.

Maybe he's not a good actor, but forget that, maybe he's not the best Andrea Chénier, forget that too, but who can sing in that way, wiht taht magic voice thay only could be given by God? He' the best.

To the contraire..:P I think his acting was excellent! I've heard he wasn't a great actor too but I beg to differ..'his large size apparently limited his mobility on stage'... His acting was awesome in 'e lucevan le stelle'.. go chk it out :) Although, I think Mario Lanza had the greatest tenor voice ever, if not the greatest tenor career(by some standards)

The voice was a big lyric, but his technique was so solid that it put the Spinto rep like this easily within his reach. I never got to hear him live, but I can tell that it carries well because of the focus and efficiency of it. It's pure Bel Canto. He was vulnerable and emotive, other tenori whose voices are bigger like Corelli or DelMonaco were not as communicative or open as Luciano. I wish he had taken better care of himself too.

Great and moving performance. Good acting as well. His face and body does not always express it, but his voice does. Best overall tenor of the 20th century.

muy buenos comentarios y tiene razón en decir que pavarotti tiene la suficiente tecnicca para hacer este rol pero también hay que considerar que auí pavarotti tenía 61 años y ya noe staba en las mejores condiciones vocales y mucho menos escenicas.. la vez pasaba leí a un comentario que decía que kraus era mejor que pavarotti y que todo cuando canta nessun dorma .. kraus no hubiera durado si cantaba operas duras.. aver qu em dicen

Pavarotti was very talented but prematurely destroyed his career through overeating. For a number of years he was too heavy and too weak to engage in normal acting on stage. Eventually his poor physical condition affected his singing, as you can hear in this video.

¿Han dicho por ahí abajo que Pavarotti tenía voz pequeña? Lo que le faltaba era mala leche para interpretar a este personaje. Actúa bien, canta genial, pero da la sensación de que no se entrega. Carreras, a pesar de sus agudos insuficientes, hace un Chenier mucho más creíble. Si mezclásemos las virtudes de ambos tendríamos un Chenier tan bueno como Gigli o del Mónaco.

Me gusta más el Chenier de Placido Domingo, que el de Carreras y Pavarotti. Mi preferido es el de Mario del Monaco o el de Gigli. Diferentes voces y estilos pero interpretaciones muy buenas. El de Corelli tambien es muy bueno

I never talk about his acting,I just say that the role is a bit heavy for his voice. Otherwise for me the Maestro is just the greastest artist I have ever heard singing and acting,he is a full lyric artist.He is the best . Thank you to Luciano for all this marvelous moment. But for he is still here with us .

thanks, i am an amater singer. trying to learn the singing lessons...i am a bit old to start a carear, but happy of trying. the singing is something very special, and very demanding. only a few can do something profesionally.
