Its like the Ventures are Manchester United and The Shadows are Sheffield United. I went to school in Sheffield and they are dear to my heart, but they are not in Manchester's Class.
I know all about the Shadows. I have two of their cd's. They are good but not in the same league as the Ventures. the Shadows would not have made it on their own. They made it because of their fame as a part of Cliff Richards group. By the way on one of your comments yesterday You said Dick tale it is actually Dick Dale.
@sirpeter1946 The Ventures enjoyed popularity and success in the US/Japan during 1960s. With over 110 million albums sold worldwide, they remain the best selling instrumental rock group of all time. 38 Ventures albums charted in the US, and 6 of 14 chart singles made it into the Top 40, with 3 making it into the Top 10. Of their 38 albums 34 of them occurred in the 1960s, and The Ventures rank as the 6th best pop album performer for that decade, according to "Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Albums".
They were way overdue for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And to all those who attack the oldies, try finding a rapper or boy band still performing after 20 years, let alone 50.
Just amazing- these guys could trade off on guitar and bass like it was the most natural thing in the world. Fantastic band, I love them. Myabe the best band ever.
Bob taught me that badass speed guitar solos existed long before Hendrix. He was an immense guitarist, I couldn't believe it when I found out he'd gone. RIP Bob Bogle.
The Ventures set the standard for surf music. I just saw these shitty nerds called the pyronauts playing walk dont run and it was nauseating. Ick. But THIS IS THE SONG THAT I REMEMBER!
@surfguitarman101 Nice job of putting a little 'ray of sunshine' among a lot of positive comments. Bob Bogle & The Ventures were a class act, you are a fucking punk.
Really something to cherish--after all these years. 1968 (at 11) I seen it played by a band in Baguio, Phil, while vacationing there--& it was very enlightening for me--and 4 years later I taught myself how to play a guitar--This was very instrumental to my inspiration.
Thank you--Ventures.
& thanks for posting one of my favorite all time tunes.
RIP Bob you were a great Player you will be misssed! Thats so great that Mels son Joined the band a power house Drummer and Don Great also Nokie you are the best too
He is the best performer of "Walk, Don't Run." Nokie, McGee, Spalding are great, but "Walk, Don't Run" belongs to Bob. Wonderful ! Flawless ! His life has been a worthwhile trip.
Thanks for being such an inspiration, Bob. Your music will continue to inspire future generations. Rock and Roll heaven just acquired another one of the best.
R.I.P. Bob Bogle. Thanks for the music and the memories. You are truly a pioneer whose sound will never be duplicated again.
These guys have been in my life since the 60s and their music is still tight to this very day. THOUSANDS of bands and artists owe their existence to The Ventures.
@starmedic Couldn't agree more. I heard these folks back in 1960 when Walk Don't Run came out. I was in high school at the time. It is because of the Ventures that I became interested in guitars. Thank you guys for all that you have done for me and for millions of others around the world.
Whether or not they are sick of playing, I've been listening to it for about 40 years now and am FAR from being sick of hearing it. Greatest Electric Guitar instrumental of All Time.
Bob played lead and Nokie played bass on the 1960 version. Skip Moore played the drums on that recording.
Nokie played lead on the 1964 version "Walk, Don't Run '64" and I guess he also did on the 1977 disco version, but I am not sure about that. Gerry McGee played on the 1969 version (back then he spelled his name "Jerry", by the way). There was also a "Walk, Don't Run 2000" recorded in 1999 on which Bob played lead again.
By the way, I am not so sure that Nokie plays lead on Walk, Don't Run on the On Stage LP, however he probably do on most of the other tunes. Usually when they are on stage, Bob plays lead on Walk, Don't Run, Perfidia and a few more tunes and Nokie plays lead on all the others. Or Gerry on the summer tours etc.
This is a bit complicated, since Gerry seems to be a member of the group while Nokie these days only plays with them as a "guest" on the short winter tours in Japan, and occasionally now and then in other situations.
Actually, the original Ventures were Bob Bogle and Don Wilson. Nokie was a studio player, as was Howie Johnson who was the drummer. When The Ventures began to tour, Nokie and Howie became members. Howie had a serious car accident and left the group. He was replaced by Mel Taylor. As time went on, Nokie and Bob would swap bass and lead duties. Later, Nokie left the group and was replaced by Gerry McGee.
May Robert R.I.P..
