  • I'd love to just try this on my 69 Beetle but, I've been told by paint guys that the durability just won't last. With that said, if the car was kept indoors and driven rarely, I suppose it would last a while. I painted our shudders on our home 3 years ago and they get sun most of the day. They have a lot of chips but haven't faded much.

  • how many coats did you do? and did you wet sand after every coat? also how did you mix the rustoleum and mineral spirts

  • I applied like four coats and thinned just a little. You just need to experiment to get the feel, painting is an art no mater what your painting. You mix with a paint stick.

  • ok i done rustoleum paint jobs and a bunch of my homies cars but never primered cuz you really dont need it but i want to just primer my ride so i can get a kandy paint job later when you primered your car did you use any mineral spirits or thinner with the primer or just straight primer and how did it come out

  • I didn't thin the primer I believe you can though. Just stick with the directions on the can. I did let it dry for 48 hours then block sanded with 600 grit paper before applying first coat of paint.

  • ok no thinning but did you wet sand the primer or what i just need to kno you step for the primer cuz i wanna primer my car then take it o a shop to get painted metallic or kandy with flakes

  • Yes I block sanded using 600 grit paper.

  • Is it worth it to wet sand from a rolled finish as opposed to the, I would think, smoother finish from spraying? In retrospect, would you have been better off to spray? Your opinion? At least at a distance, the paint and stripes looks really good. Should be a great conversion. I want to do this so bad but the economy (and me) has beaten me to death. Will have to wait for economic grace.

  • The reasons I rolled on the paint.

    1) I don't have a way of spraying the paint or a place to spray it.

    2) Cost the paint is much cheaper.

    3) Touch up are a breeze plus to can do one section at a time too. (no over spray issues to deal with)

Google "roll on paint job" there is tons of information out there.

  • @mcrickman

how long does it take to dry between coats

  • you have to wet sand with spray too every 3 coats then wet sand after 9 coats or more then another 6 or so coats of clear

then use1000 - 1500 grit sand paper to finish then buff out lil scatches will a rubbing compound or a poliching cmpound and dwam you done

  • dam you can can tape lol. taping is like tinting windows. you either got it or you dont. i dont both really. 8) in ending great work they look like a pro. impressed.

  • what you do the stripes with?

  • I painted them with a roller too. Just taped them off with the green automotive 3M tape.

  • also im doing mine a pearl white with small black 5 star rims and white letter tires.ovo

im replacing the yellow tail lenses with all red ones for a corvette look.

  • i have this car. roll on paint?. meh dont know lol. wheres the body is all steel it loves those small dents. youre body seems to be in better shape then mine so it actually might look good. is it low gloss or what?. i need about $1000 in body dent and fender dent fubar repairs sadly. just need a lot more body repair and floorboard repairs and sealent. eventually get her fixed. 8(

  • Overall, on a scale of 1-10, how happy are you with the paint job? Did you do 1 coat of primer, 6-8 coats of white? Sand every other coat? Im interested in doing this too, just havent seen how good it looks in person yet ha

  • 1.) I sanded the old paint with 60 grit to ruff it up.

2.) rolled on a couple of coats of metal primer.

3.) wet sanded with 600 grit.

4.) rolled on paint from can no thinning

5.) wet sanded with 800 grit

    6.) repeat 3-4 times.

7.) last coat I wet sanded with 1000 grit.

8.) buffed with turtle wax compound then polish

9.) waxed paint It will look as good as you want it to. ie: show car if you buff buff buff

Tip: being white I would mist it with a gray primer and wet sand off so its nice and even.

  • what else did u have to do besides the roll on?? any sanding?? looks good, i have one just like it, i will like to do the same.

  • You have to wet sand.

  • did you have any painting experince before doing this? I want to rustoleum my daily but have never painted before

  • I have never painted a car using a roller just the house. I have painted before not professionally though.

  • how long did it take you to buff it, and how much did the buffing all together cost?

  • I bought a Porter Cable 7424 buffer for around $100. Hasn't taken to long to get a nice finish using this buffer.

  • thank you :)

  • how did u make the racing stripes?

  • I taped them off and painted them using Rustoleum black paint.

  • Nice work! Are you happy with the paint job? Did it turn out ok?

  • Yes, the paint came out really nice. It was also very easy to correct any mistakes.

  • It going to be a great car when ur done!

    Have Fun!

  • Nice job, looks really great.
