Everybody talks so much shit on youtube, It's unreal. Quarter mile numbers don't lie. If you have ever gone to EVO VS STI Day in Englishtown, The Evo's walk all over the Subarus all day, and still people blow these cars so hard. I don't get it.
@AlexEDAllen Man your funny. When i bought my STi there was an EVO X with a blown engine had 5000 miles on it. If you do stupid shit constantly the car will blow up. Saying a Subaru has a chocolate engine takes balls. My WRX has 90000 on it and i beat on it since i bought it in 2002. The EVO engine is nothing special either. The STi block can handle 700hp. The Pistons and the rods and mains are the STi`s weakest engine components. You get the parts from Cosworth you are set.
IDK. Run any bike stock against a stock Veyron and see what's up... It may not be fair or happen in real life all that often, but the bike (ANY stock bike) gets smoked like fine hash in Amsterdam.

(bench racing here) The 05 r6, which I own, can run a 9.93 at 145mph in the 1/4 with a one-down front sprocket, front end tie-downs, and rear lowering links (and Nicky Gadsen at the helm!!) which costs around $200. In 05, that didn't top $10,000. But put $30,000 into a Viper, and it will run some beastly 1/4 numbers as well.

I'm a Subaru tech in Alaska and have seen every 08 sti blow up, stock and modified. It's the ring land on the piston because the factory didn't give the rings enough clearance when they expand. So... Over time engine goes boom! Look it up. We just replaced the block( and heads if damaged) under warranty. Nothing charged to customer.
@ArcticSTi i think it's a global issue, the ring land. we have it here in south africa, and it's allover the forums. how does the 2010 hatchback's pistons compare to the 08's ? Are the pistons as shit? Or did they improve it?
@mastrlegacy No they do not, The 08 models had it rough, a lot of the engines had to be repaired due to the manufacturer messing up. But they fixed it all. The 05 motor is just fine, just keep an eye on your oil level. I check min in my 03 2-3 times per week. Oil deprivation is the biggest killer of a subaru engine.
@242DEE Yes I have and you have to run huge amounts of boost through them to make power. I can make the same power on an STi with 20psi that you would have to run 28-30psi. They are prone for blowing head gaskets. People praise them because they can run a ton of boost because of the closed deck design but that is also one of their downfalls. They trap too much heat in the cylinders and fry piston rings.

@rextuner03 thats on stock internals though put 15k in both of the engines and same mods and the 4g63 will come out on top + the 4g63 block is cast iron
and evos can go bigger displacement to but enough about motors lets talk about handling LOL the evo has more coring speed and it doesn't under steer it over steers but overall the evos the better car it handles better takes and takes mods better the subaru is a better dd thanks to the suspension the interior might be better on the wrx i think otherwise and the wrx is safer that's it

The most displacement an EVO could ever get to is 2.2L while a subaru can go to 2.7 with a stroker kit. And the subaru only understeers if you don't set the DCCD to more power in the rear. @242DEE If memory serves correct isn't the 4G64 was an N/A motor right? If so you would have to then buy forged internals for that because the pistons and crank wouldn't handle the high boost. But then also you would have to stroke it to keep the compression down for that too. Putting a 2.0L head on a 2.3 - 2.4L motor raises the compression a bit. And you do know that symmetrical AWD is literally THE best awd right? Not trying to be a smart ass but look it up. It's AMAZING.

the 08s have a common problem with blowing up when on the dyno. Al im sure isnt the only one to do it, even if this motor is "blown". P&L has a blown 08 sitting in their shop, part of being a tuner is pushing the limits of motors to find their thresholds and you then know what you can and cant do. Shit happens
Yea when each new car comes out(especially the 08 that has been redesigned more than previous years) I would expect a blown motor, a few mistakes. That is tuning-finding the limit of the motor and then calibrating and tuning accordingly. It kind of sucks for personal cars, but if for example its a shop sponsored car then its not big deal.
Mine blew, cracked the ringlands in cyl #4, and it still idled nice and ran OK although it was down on power and puffed smoke. I have a video of it posted up here.
I have a sti. and it did the same thing if you listen to the engine its ticking it's got a cracked piston (piston slap) then the compression form the cylinder get into the crank case an blows the dipstick out.
Some people here are stupid. All that happened was that the oil dip stick blew out,spraying some oil around (sometimes it causes fires!). It happens on boosted cars a lot. That motor was NOT blown.

I dont have any big love for Al, I have had it out with him HUGE in the past on nasioc, but you cant crap on him because a car blew up. He isnt as good as he thinks he is (but who is as good as they think they are?) but he sure as hell isnt bad.
I agree, a tuning shop needs to push to the limit in order to stand out from the rest, if they don't make more power, why go to them, and doing so will lead to some messed up engines from time to time.
Thats a risk everybody can have when you modified your ride, i have meet him in person and seems to be not only a cool guy but also someone with experience when modifying WRXs or EVOs, he had work on my friends 04 STI and so far the car is fine.
ICS Performance is a poorly run business. They are rude and hang up on their repeat customers, and sell them their own used parts with no receipts or invoices. Don't trust these guys. If anything goes wrong with their work, they will ignore you because they already got their money.
Al is awesome, that guy checking the oil needs to work on his impressions before he pulls a stunt like this again. The only thing I have ever heard of Al breaking is the 5 year old transmission in his 1016whp EVO. The engine was fine by the way.

the 08s have a common problem with blowing up when on the dyno. Al im sure isnt the only one to do it, even if this motor is "blown". P&L has a blown 08 sitting in their shop, part of being a tuner is pushing the limits of motors to find their thresholds and you then know what you can and cant do. Shit happens

Yea when each new car comes out(especially the 08 that has been redesigned more than previous years) I would expect a blown motor, a few mistakes. That is tuning-finding the limit of the motor and then calibrating and tuning accordingly. It kind of sucks for personal cars, but if for example its a shop sponsored car then its not big deal.

Mine blew, cracked the ringlands in cyl #4, and it still idled nice and ran OK although it was down on power and puffed smoke. I have a video of it posted up here.

I have a sti. and it did the same thing if you listen to the engine its ticking it's got a cracked piston (piston slap) then the compression form the cylinder get into the crank case an blows the dipstick out.

yah, the blowby pushes it out. It happens in cars too with alot of miles when the cylinders cant hold the compression well.

Some people here are stupid. All that happened was that the oil dip stick blew out,spraying some oil around (sometimes it causes fires!). It happens on boosted cars a lot. That motor was NOT blown.

Any tuning shop that doesnt occasionally blow a motor, isnt ever going to make REAL power.
Good shops push the envelope. You have to find the limits of a motor if you want to tune withing them.
I dont have any big love for Al, I have had it out with him HUGE in the past on nasioc, but you cant crap on him because a car blew up. He isnt as good as he thinks he is (but who is as good as they think they are?) but he sure as hell isnt bad.

I agree, a tuning shop needs to push to the limit in order to stand out from the rest, if they don't make more power, why go to them, and doing so will lead to some messed up engines from time to time.

Thats a risk everybody can have when you modified your ride, i have meet him in person and seems to be not only a cool guy but also someone with experience when modifying WRXs or EVOs, he had work on my friends 04 STI and so far the car is fine.
