how McSorely didn't didn't get dropped by Wendal's first 2 punches is beyond me. Full props to him being able to stay on his feet and swing back after that
What I loved about Clark is that he didn't believe in the "honour code" he would be the crap out of you even if you were down on the ice defenseless until the refs stepped in to stop it. LOL I loved Gilmour but Wendell is the GREATEST Leaf ever imo!!
@Vinnie7683 I only put him into the same category as Ulf because of a few incidents later in his career; the Brasheer incident being the keystone one. When Marty was an Oiler and a King he got away with a lot of chap shots that were to a much lesser degree.
Gilmour's head was not down and it was indeed an attempt at an elbow to the head. Clark tuned up McSorley good. I remember seeing McSorley's face a day after this fight, he had lumps on lumps.
i would say clark was given up maybe 20-30 pounds to mcsorley and at that time mcsorley had a rep of one of the 2 or 3 dudes in hockey you just didn't want to fuck with. clark went to his ass with all he had and got my respect. mcsorley showed why he earned that rep and wendell clark showed why he had mad fucking heart.
@grock4343 McSorley was in the same category as guys like Ulf Samuelson. Dirty and not above taking very cheap shots that could have devastating consequences on a guy's career.
I love how people (leaf fans mainly) thought Clark actually won this fight...Clark suckered him which you dont see on video and landed about 3-4 good ones...Marty took them easy, and kept firing back and won the rest of the fight while Clark was gassed and was holding on for dear life. If you think a black eye is what determines the winner then you havent fought and know nothing about fighting period
@goatscansing Never said I was an expert, but fought plenty in hockey growing up and else where...Just making the point that a black eye doesnt determine the winner, damage isnt so much what you see on the outside, its how you feel and Marty was still ready to go while Wendel was so exausted...By the way I am a leaf fan but always liked Mcsorley so its not a bias opinion but Marty won this fight...Props for Wendel though, he was one hell of a captain and one of the best bodycheckers.
Our best player was laying on the ice, and hadn't got up yet. Had he got up we would have continued the play. but he hadn't got up so i thought he was more hurt than he was. So i just uh... went over and talked to Marty! - Wendel Clark (The Legend)
I have an old vhs called "Leafs Passion". In it showed this part except it had dialogue with wendel. Wendel simply says "I saw my captain get hit, he was laying on the ice, so i decided I would go have a word with Mcsorley". Instantly became my favorite hockey player ever.
THIS WAS OUR CUP YEAR, THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL MONTREAL WOULD BEAT THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS IN A FINAL WITH PLAYERS LIKE THAT, GILMOUR CLARK, NO CHANCE,,, FUK YOU MONTREAL WE GOING TO FUK YOU ONE DAY WHEN IT COUNTS?
Will never forget this one...especially McSorley's black eye on the front page of The Sun the next day...Gill vs. Taylor's bout was pretty good too, but was relegated to the undercard considering the combatants in the main-event.
CLARK WON this fight. McSorely's face was beaten beyond reconition. McSorely threw more, but Clarks connected and did WAY more damage. If i fight a five yr old who punches me in the face 100 times and does no damage, then i punch him once and break his jaw, who do you call the winner? In a boxing match, maybe McSorely wins, but in a FIGHT - Wendel is the winner.
Hands down, Clark one of the best players ever. Anyway, McSorley took the first punches and got badly bruised but kept on going and still was exchanging big bombs, he was a warrior too.
@jonasnight are you high? clark was clearly the better man in this fight. for you to even think marty had a single chance of winning this, automaticaly dubs you fucked in the head
@pcpowerskating Have you ever seen McSorely's face the fight? McSorely and Clark were throwing even until Marty decided to lose his jersey, after that he got the better of the Clark. So considering the look of Marty's face, I believe that Clark won the fight.
wow mcsorley was tough back then, he was jumped by clark and got smacked and came back and actually beat clark at the end, I give this fight a win for mcsorley.
Clark held on for dear life... McSorley was prepared to take a few after the hit.. but then realized Clark was trying to really TKO him... Win by McSorley!
@DaPlay2006 How can you say mcsorley won this fight clark had no damage and mcsorley had his face smashed in. Gota love these kids talking about something that happened before they were born.
Clark blasted away with his four hard rights, but Mcsorley took them without flinching - rock hard head and jaw. Clark was out of gas, just holding on. McSorley is scary, a crazy fighter....Would win Last Man Standing in a NHL brawl contest.
Clark landed the best blow though but it wasnt enough for the draw bec McSorley took over quickly, he outlanded his opponent and Clark looked overmatched too, controlled clearly by McSorley in the end of the bout.
NARROW WIN McSorley. if someone wanna calls this clear win McSorley its ok call too.
i know of no other player in the nhl that is more deserving to have his name on that holy grail than wendel clark and its a shame it never happened !!
wendell clark was the heart of the leafs during his years there... he was the first to innovate the snap shot... awesome goals came off of his stick using his snap shot... great fighter and scorer
Say what you will about McSorley ---- He took 3 big time pops to the face and didn't fall down... And I bet those hurt because Wendel didn't hold back.
Marty won the fight, Wendel landed a few hard punches early but the middle (not shown) and end was all Marty - by the end of the fight Wendel was either hugging him beacuse he was sweet on him, (oh yeah wasn't Wendel gay?) or was praying the linesmen would step in. Either way Marty won the fight and changed the tone of the series allowing the great one to work his magic in game 7
@winy68 nah mate. game 6 OT, leafs up 3-2, gretzky high sticks doug gilmour and cuts him - in those days a match penalty. fraser chokes on his whistle, doesn't send gretzky off (which also would have nullified a glen anderson penalty) and seconds later, pots the game winner himself. cue his grandiose performance in game 7, series over, and darkness reigned in toronto's sports scene
@winy68 ...clearly marty would have won the fight had it gone longer, but the referees stepped in. to me it was a draw with clark doing a lot more damage to the face of marty just cause he landed 4 hard punches. clark was holding on for dear life.so thats how i see it. just cause no one dropped to the ground but like i said it would have been marty that would have won the fight had it lasted more. A Draw.
gilmour was a bitch.the first thing they teach you in peewees is keep our head up!!!guess he wasn't there that day.probably had his head down and got knocked out.
wendie held on for dear life, just because marty's eye was mangled doesn't mean he lost,i bet wendie had a sore head for a month after taking about 20 shots.only in laff land did wendie win, maybe laff fans should put down the GOLF channel and watch some UFC,then you'll know alittle about fighting.
@highwaystar1009 Because I hate bitches that lay on the ice for four days like they're dead and then all of a sudden get up and start talkin smack. Wendall should've gave Gilmour a slap for that as well.
Wendel Clark was one tough customer, he'd fight anyone, anytime. Remember way back when the Leafs played in the wesstern conference, back before Bettman took a huge shit on hockey tradition and got rid of the Adams, Patrick, Smythe and Norris divisions. I miss old time hockey
A TOTAL elbow to the head intended to injure Gilmour their best player at the time. Wendel skated right over and took on a guy a foot taller and 40 lbs heavier. He stood his ground. That was a draw in my opinion but clark was a player Mcsorley was just coasting waiting to hit so he had more wind. I would say Clark won for heart alone!
Sure...you all drinking too much good Canadian beer. The hit on Gilmour was good. Gilmour was paying attention to nothing & asked for it. As for Clark? He was clinging to McSorley for most of the fight to keep from falling on his ass. Notice that bald spot? Yeah, Marty knocked the hair right off of that too.
Marty did something for his team; every tampon on other team would always weep.
This is why nobody wears no. 17 on the Leafs anymore. They don't need to retire Clark's #17 jersey. It's ALREADY retired. The ultimate sign of respect. The legend of Clark only grows with time.
What a player clark was, one of a kind. He fought on his tip toes more times than I can count. I am his #1 fan, great guy I don't think there are many like wendel in the league nowadays... Mcsorely the next day showed the press and was pissed off, huge shiner...
Not a clean hit at all.......Mcsorley left his feet,as well he led with his forearm. He was headhunting.Suspendable hit in todays game. Just revenge would have been to steam roll Gretzky, too bad they didn't.
Wendel was the greatest! What a coward hit, Harry Neale says Gilmours head was down, well his head was up and McSorley couldn't hit him cleanly cause he's a piece of sh1t with no honour. Wendel give him a quick lesson on honour though.
Clark was an absolute beast! I took off from my school trip in TO that night, bought tickets from a scalper ...Great game!!! My 5 day suspension from school was well worth it!
as long as I live I will never get over this series, I don't want to be dramatic, but it broke my heart and to be honest I have never been the same .... Toronto vs Montreal for the cup ! What could have been.
Wendel is such a tough son of a bitch, McSorely was two inches taller and 35 pounds heavier and Wendel mangled him. Gotta love Killer though too, recovering from the hit and going at it with the Kings bench
@leafyutube Uhhhh......a black eye? Loved this series. McSorely popping Killer in the face behind the play, Shuchuck lambasting him into the boards, Ellet looking toward the slot as Gretzky completes his hat trick, Killer bitching from a high stick to the dude who eventually would send it back to Toronto for game seven. Phenomenal series won by the better team.
@ canadianplanter - That's why McSorley covers the camera as he leaves the ice, right? Because he is embarassed that he almost knocked Clark out? No, it's because he got clocked 3 times solid early and was busted wide open. Those useless taps on the back of the head don't count.
i still think clark won this .....was a great fight no doubt ...but most people judge a fight by the damage done thats a fact and mcsorely came out looking like a wreck plain and simple
Call it what is is fellas...Clark answered the bell for a fallen teammate, Wendel did the most damage in the fight but IMO (and it seems to be shared by several here) that Marty landed more and often. I guess that means he wins the decision. Let's remember again that this was at the tail end of the game so both players were winded. Clark did well in at least 1 rematch. 2 great fighters either way. The Kings did go on to win the series and I firmly believe Marty's run at Gilmour played a factor.
Clark mostly beat up non-fighters. When he fought enforcers like McSorley and Probert he looked over matched. He's lucky he never fought Kocur, standing and throwing with that guy was suicide.
@flowerdrop1 Kocur was a animal for sure ...but him and wendel were amazing friends the grew up together in Alberta, i think a farm away from each other . many people thought they were cousins there werent tho ......when Clark and Kocur plated each other in the playoffs they swore to the media they would not fight and they didt
clark gave up 50 lb in this fight. great job after a hit late in the game when all was decided. gotta love harry neale in the background yapping about Gilmore taking on the bench. he's a commentating loser
thats the only thing he had 2 black eyes ...watch the fight again..... mcsorely didn't loose the fight it was even ..but you must be a leaf fan now i understand
By the way, if you have not seen this Stanley semi-final game from 1993 you should try to find it on-line! After the Leafs had the game in the bag in the 3rd period, all hell breaks loose! This fight was only a part of it.....Leaf Coach Pat Burns tries to run at the L.A. coach and is held back by the toronto police....DURING the game!!
What a warrior Clark is! He got the best of him no doubt!! Why do you think McSorely covers the camera with his hands when he is leaving the ice?? The next day when he was interviewed by the media, his face was totally mangled! Wendel....stands up for his team mates!! My fave Leaf of all time!!
The hit was late....McSorley lost by decision to a player who was a light heavyweight by size standards, but superheavywieght by heart standards...he deserved every punch he received. There must be 40 lb difference in size....good show Wendell!
@Eddieshack67 I like WC - but Marty won that fight 10-9 easily. Wendl was never the same after this serious, Marty still had several good years after this up to the Donald Brashear incident.
BTW - Gilmour is a fuckin pussy and deserved everything and more that Marty gave him.
@MrGreeneyes2469 This was a late hit with some elbow involved. No one deservse a cheap shot UNLESS they are a cheap shot. Gilmour was not. Wendel was plagued by back problems and from what I remember when watching hockey in the mid to late 90s Wendel was still tough and still played with his heart and the same wrecklesness that he was loved for. He may not have landed more then McSorely, but he sure as hell fucked up McSorely. Covering the camera up says it all.
@MrGreeneyes2469 you're a pussy like that very ugly kid you have on your channel .... one day that he/she will be shooting water cannons on a float like you goof !
I still remember this. This whole shenanigans happen because of Wendel Clark. Before this shift Tony Granato I believe cross checked Bob Rouse on the head causing a mini brawl. And the reason that happen is because the shift before that Clark had 3 massive hits. So it was inevitable fire works was going to happen, especially the game was pretty much lop sided at that point.
The leafs are known for being pussy on this series. The Kings really embarassed the lame leafs. Mcsorley won that fight, Clark and Gilmour are the number one barbie players.
@kingsfan1001, well after I spent .000001 seconds counting all the cups the Kings have won, I realized this was the year they were relevant also. I don't really see how winning in seven games consititutes as "spanked" but I'm just assuming your over use of the hyperbole is laughable as being a Kings fan.
As a matter of fact, The Queens never sniffed a playoff until 97/98 when they were "Spanked" by the Blues (4 games). Then spanked again by the Wings in 99/00 (again 4 games, wow impressive!).
Well, the Kings were relevant enough in 1993 to knock the Leafs out of the playoffs. You should read some of the accounts of what was going on before game 7 in Toronto. Everyone was convinced that the Leafs were going to play the Habs in the finals. My guess is that the Kings will raise the Cup before the Leafs will. Leafs are rudderless and Burke isn't going to be able to fix it.
@kingsfan1001 yes, thats what I said. "I realized this was the year they were relevant also."
I'm referring to the term "spanked" as a tad inaccurate, as I just don't see how a 7-Game series could be referred to as that (unless the last game was 7-0).
The fact that the fans and media relished an all-Canadian team final has nothing to do with the actual team itself.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of either team, so really if either raises the cup in the next 20 years, good on them.
I guess Gilmour was too tired from banging the teenager who was babysitting his kids to fight McSorley. He had to have Clark step in for him. What a little biatch!!! Kings spanked the Leafs in that series. That was the last time that the Leafs were relevant.
Hey Shanahan how many games would you give Mcsorley for this head shot....

I remember it like it was yesterday. Clean hit, Clark definitely tagged Marty with one good hard shot, that was all.
JohnnyHolmes100 9 months ago
Wendel Clark was one tough customer, he'd fight anyone, anytime. Remember way back when the Leafs played in the wesstern conference, back before Bettman took a huge shit on hockey tradition and got rid of the Adams, Patrick, Smythe and Norris divisions. I miss old time hockey

"It might have been an elbow". It was an interference for sure though! :)
dagerback 10 months ago 2

@Jesuscatshockey Were you watching the same fight as I was?? McSorley had a black eye after recieving 4 straight rights.
belair55zz56 11 months ago 2
This is why nobody wears no. 17 on the Leafs anymore. They don't need to retire Clark's #17 jersey. It's ALREADY retired. The ultimate sign of respect. The legend of Clark only grows with time.
leafyutube 11 months ago
What a player clark was, one of a kind. He fought on his tip toes more times than I can count. I am his #1 fan, great guy I don't think there are many like wendel in the league nowadays... Mcsorely the next day showed the press and was pissed off, huge shiner...

Clark, was game, McSorely was just to strong for him. Wendell, was ''man up'' the whole way. I would have loved to work with Wendell.

If that hit by McSorley were done in the NHL now, it would get the player who did it suspended. Late hit plus a head shot.

Have to agree that it was a dirty hit by McSorley. He deserved the ass licking he got.
dnzg66 1 year ago
@ canadianplanter - That's why McSorley covers the camera as he leaves the ice, right? Because he is embarassed that he almost knocked Clark out? No, it's because he got clocked 3 times solid early and was busted wide open. Those useless taps on the back of the head don't count.

If you're watching the same fight I am, Clark was lucky he wasn't KO'd by McSorley.

The Kings did go on to win the series and I firmly believe Marty's run at Gilmour played a factor.
jerkywolf33 1 year ago 2
Clark mostly beat up non-fighters. When he fought enforcers like McSorley and Probert he looked over matched. He's lucky he never fought Kocur, standing and throwing with that guy was suicide.
flowerdrop1 1 year ago
@flowerdrop1 Kocur was a animal for sure ...but him and wendel were amazing friends the grew up together in Alberta, i think a farm away from each other . many people thought they were cousins there werent tho ......when Clark and Kocur plated each other in the playoffs they swore to the media they would not fight and they didt

Eddieshack67 1 year ago 16
@Eddieshack67 I like WC - but Marty won that fight 10-9 easily. Wendl was never the same after this serious, Marty still had several good years after this up to the Donald Brashear incident.
BTW - Gilmour is a fuckin pussy and deserved everything and more that Marty gave him.
MrGreeneyes2469 1 year ago
@MrGreeneyes2469 This was a late hit with some elbow involved. No one deservse a cheap shot UNLESS they are a cheap shot. Gilmour was not. Wendel was plagued by back problems and from what I remember when watching hockey in the mid to late 90s Wendel was still tough and still played with his heart and the same wrecklesness that he was loved for. He may not have landed more then McSorely, but he sure as hell fucked up McSorely. Covering the camera up says it all.

@belair55zz56 key phrase "next series" ... Leafs were watching at home
flowerdrop1 1 year ago
I still remember this. This whole shenanigans happen because of Wendel Clark. Before this shift Tony Granato I believe cross checked Bob Rouse on the head causing a mini brawl. And the reason that happen is because the shift before that Clark had 3 massive hits. So it was inevitable fire works was going to happen, especially the game was pretty much lop sided at that point.

thomasmoonman 1 year ago
@kingsfan1001, well after I spent .000001 seconds counting all the cups the Kings have won, I realized this was the year they were relevant also. I don't really see how winning in seven games consititutes as "spanked" but I'm just assuming your over use of the hyperbole is laughable as being a Kings fan.
As a matter of fact, The Queens never sniffed a playoff until 97/98 when they were "Spanked" by the Blues (4 games). Then spanked again by the Wings in 99/00 (again 4 games, wow impressive!).
aZombieSlayer 1 year ago
@aZombieSlayer
Leafs are rudderless and Burke isn't going to be able to fix it.
kingsfan1001 1 year ago
@kingsfan1001 yes, thats what I said. "I realized this was the year they were relevant also."
I'm referring to the term "spanked" as a tad inaccurate, as I just don't see how a 7-Game series could be referred to as that (unless the last game was 7-0).
The fact that the fans and media relished an all-Canadian team final has nothing to do with the actual team itself.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of either team, so really if either raises the cup in the next 20 years, good on them.
aZombieSlayer 1 year ago

Eddieshack67 1 year ago
I guess Gilmour was too tired from banging the teenager who was babysitting his kids to fight McSorley. He had to have Clark step in for him. What a little biatch!!! Kings spanked the Leafs in that series. That was the last time that the Leafs were relevant.
kingsfan1001 1 year ago
@kingsfan1001 Well, I'M no Leafs fan but YOUR Kings were never relevent....
