Beautiful tribute & brilliantly done. Myst came shipped with my mum's Apple Mac when I was around 18yrs old (thats over twenty years ago now *shudder*) & it set me on the road to graphic & latterly interactive web design. I met the Bryce community throgh my love of the games, after emailing (& getting a reply!) from Rand Millar about the software used to create Myst. These guys were the utter masters, glorious game, wonderful memories & huge thanks for my now life. Viva Cyan.
I remember something distinct about this game that really scared me when I was little. I'm trying to remember what it was. All I remember was I was walking into this room and kind of remember pulling a lever (not sure), and then a guy came up behind me and killed me with an axe. Can someone please tell me if I am remembering correct and give me details on which game it was?
@nic95 - I think that's the either the first or second game - (its been a while!) - The "room" was actually a doorway onto a clifftop platform type thing, if I remember - you step out & the lever is in front of you, if you pulled it straight away a "hairy" guy did ineed thump you!
@scotia2k6 I believe you're thinking of Exile. If you re-open the Narayan shield to let Saavedro back into the linking chamber, he'll run up the roof and kill you with his hammer.
Very nice tribute. I was working at PC Mag. in the early nineties when Myst fell on my desk. (Proper metaphor, indeed.) I was completely blown away and spent many a late night sitting in the dark of my office wandering those strange and fantastic worlds. There was nothing like it. What fun. When are we going to get something new Cyan?
@legoman3342 Same, I used to sit on his lap when I was younger and watch and help him play Myst, I know how to complete the first one in a breeze from that.
@autotitslinger nice, when I was reaaally young he made me play a game with the arrow keys on our old dell about when i was 3, my dad also used an ibm with ms-dos. Now since I'm a big computer geek I look back and think, those where the gold o'l days...
I remember playing the game. But can anyone tell me what the game was all about and what the motive was. It's been 5 years now, but I have a bad memory.
That ball rolling puzzle shown at 3:57 was so easy, I remember solving that entirely by accident, I was just messing around with the puzzle for the first time just to see what I was dealing with and BAM! I was done with it the first try.
I think Exile was the best, at least the most interesting and beautiful of the ones I've played... especially with the backstory that gradually revealed itself.
Although, I must confess that at the time when I first played the games, I was a child and impatient, so I read the cheat books to get through the game, and just played it for the sheer enjoyment of it and not the puzzles.
Myst was revolutionary for its time, with a solid if not plodding storyline, but Uru and Myst five, even if graphically up to date were non-sequiter CGI pieces of crap.
Watching this gives me the same emotions you feel when suddenly finding a piece of clothing from an old girlfriend. Memories just rushing back that I didn't even know existed. I miss the 90's.
I find it funny that no matter how much more detailed and expansive and realistic video game graphics get, the games back before Microsoft or Sony even had a console gaming system and HD was just a twinkle in our eyes were really the best games to take us to those far away places.
It's very simple. Back then the gaming "industry" was stil developing, deciding what it wanted to become once "grown up". Many games were a labor of love, much closer to an art form than to a mass product. Today it's all about moving units and appealing to the broadest audience, gaming has become like television basically. No more smart and innovative games anymore, courtesy of gaming megacorporations.
Thankfully there's the odd puzzle game coming from Europe now and then :)
@flupetepak There are still lots of games made out of passion rather than greed. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., The Void, Portal, Zeno Clash... In fact I think you could say every indie game (and obviously some large AAA games) are made out of passion. You just gotta know where to look.
I understand your point, I'm a huge Stalker fan myself and fortunately I usually know where to look ;) But see, apart from Portal, every game you mentioned comes from odd places, Ukraine, Chile, Russia...
Lol i have the music at 4:45 as my ringtone, i thought my phone was ringing when i watched this vid... And i grew up playing myst, truly amazing games.
It reminds me of space odyssey 2001. Someone has already been there. You have to figure it out. the "time doesn't 'exist' as you'd thought it did.. only space" mentality.
I got into Myst when my dad got the first game... on one of those clunky Windows brick-like laptops... good times... being that I was a kid, the most I could do was fail around. And manage to get into Channelwood(by luck) and Selenitic Age.(by virtue of being one of those musical kids.) That said, it was some enjoyable flailing. With groundbreaking graphics, especially for the time...
I recomended you guys try RHEM. Rhem haven't a good story base but a very good challenging puzzles.it's a good option to all the myst fans who wants to hook up.
MYST is simply amazing. The story, the graphics, the music, the gameplay, every aspect of the game is absolutely amazing. I have a MYST tribute too on my channel if anyone wants to check it out
@SHeikVoight Marty O'Donnel- Myst Suite, Marty O'Donnel- Riven Gehn, Jack Wall (Exile soundtrack)- The Dilemma, Jack Wall (Revelation soundtrack)- Main Theme, Tim Larkin- First Feast of the Maker, Tim Larkin (End of Ages soundtrack)- Finale. :)
I think that Real Myst was the best, it was a remake of the original, but with day and night, you can actually walk around (you don't just click to move) and a new World!
hey guys im thinking of playing myt which is the best one? please reply, i dont play a lot of games so dont wanna waste like 20 hours getting into one lol
almost finished syberia, and phantasmagoria - AWESOME
@GatecrasherSlim personally, Riven is my favorite. The environment and atmosphere is the most diverse and enjoyable. However, Exile is another solid choice. Enjoy!
Myst is awesome. i remember playing the 1st one and i was diggin it...might not be as graphically appealing now a days, but back then it was the shit. the music also was amazing.

Lovely video. I was so disappointed in the last two, Uru and End Of Ages, the standard and story in those games was so much less than the previous ones, damn near broke my heart.
@j0j0joanna Myst, Riven, Exile, and Revelation carry on quite fluidly as an original, but after that, Myst V and Uru are both quite stand-alone. Myst V happens hundreds of years after IV, then Uru picks up soon after and continues through to the present day (Uru has both an offline and online version)
IV is worth buying, but i would HIGHLY recommend a guide. There are many different paths. It is easy at first and becomes harder later on. I still have not finished it. I'm not sure yet if its a good idea to trigger events out of order. Again, get it with the guide, it is a great game, but the guide helps a ton.
MYST URU was alright. It was huge scenery and great music. But it was kinda dark and lonely. Great storyline if you like to read the books scattered around. If you want to carry on the storyline of MYST, play it. Maybe 3 Stars.
I like to create that kind of worlds myself. In my mind. Sometimes I draw them, use photographs etc. All it takes is imagination. Helps passing the time, especially if you're addicted to the games and you've already played them all. I even make these impossible puzzles to solve, just to annoy the non-existing players.
I so miss this game, loved the graphics the music and the mystery. I spent many hours exploring and thinking about my next move. I wish they would make another just like it.
superb tribute to an incredibly immersive, beautiful, and difficult series of games. It's a shame the bros. that created Myst went their separate ways.
man this game is really beautiful and somewhat really good puzzle game .this is what I call art game....but really I wanna see this game again with an graphics that is like Crysis.....and I know you guys how much this game will be good with those kind of shadings
Am I the only one who found the last book in Myst that takes you to the Northpole (or where ever it is, it's snowing)? There's a Polarlight-machine and a hidden room with a note from Catherine! Solve the last puzzle there for a surprise...
I got through Myst and Riven, but didn't finish Exile :(
Right now, as I was just listening to my old Myst soundtrack, I hoped I could find something on youtube, for nostalgia' s sake--I found this fantastic tribute. Thanks for this! (Faved it )
Wow. Well...I'm the failure out of all these comments. The game was sort of coming out of style by the time I got around to understanding it. I can only remember wandering around the main island of Myst. I didn't even know how big it was until last week! I can see why this video won. It showed some excellent scenes that I hope to see myself if I can ever get around to buying them for myself.
I've only played Myst, Riven, Exile, adn Uru. Revelation looks amazing and I can't wait to play it but End of Ages looks like they kind of failed in the awesomeness factor on that one.
Revelation is so incredible... I've never beaten it. I could simply go online for the help files but, I dunno, just don't want to. Get super hard! The good kinda hard, though.
& yes, V ... big no no. I bought it, played for like a hr, wasn't worth it, had no Myst feel, graphics and all the Beautiful imagery of the previous games was non-existent.
this is a great tribute to the best series of games ever made. these games did what few can do and took one into a whole entire, 100% believable world. good job on the vid.
I was very impressed with MYST! I really enjoyed solving the puzzles with my Dad. Our ultimate favourite is Exile:) However, I found Riven was extremely difficult to actually run and solve. Good video!
nothing quite like the first though.. i guess that's cleshe'. but really the innocence and innovation fo the first game (coupled with the fact that i was a kid then) really makes that game stick out in my mind still.. that and the first journey man
However i've never seen a game series able to pull out succes after succes (barring Myst 5)
Myst- simply outstanding
Riven- even better
Exile- superb game
Revelation- i was introduced in the Myst saga by this great game
URU- an interesting and enjoyable experiment
Myst 5- the only mistake in the entire series.
Played them all and i'm unable to pick out a winner. All games have such an outstanding quality and beauty and i enjoyed them all so much that it's impossible to pick one.
as Revelation probably holds a special spot for you b/c it was the first time to step into that world.
Myst the original is it for me.. probably also b/c i've only read and watched the other games.. never played them
i still remember how i felt playing myst. I'd turn the lights off and it was just the scariest...like the Zork series or journeyman.. so immersive.. less about the killing and more about the experience
While as a child my mother played myst, I was too young to apreciate it. I was almost scared of these massive, empty worlds. It wasn't till when I was older, when I tried Myst III, that I fell in love with the series.
especially in the earlier versions.. it's the kinda of game that you really need to be into to enjoy.. b/c it's very subtle, yet extremely intriguing to those of us who read into it.. literally.
I own the 3rd and 4th games (Myst III:Exile, and Myst IV: Revelation). I have tried Myst and realMyst, but for some reason Riven won't work. I have tried the single player version of Uru but didn't like it all that much. As for Myst V, from all the reports from people, i don't want to see the inside of that game, although it might be interesting to see what they ended the games with.
My name doesn't mean anything except the name of a WoW character.
good game

Hey guys
I remember watching my dad finish riven when i was a little kid.
Im keen on playing the series through, do they all work with vista?
Also, Is playing them in order necessary? I.e do the stories carry on?
Thanks!
j0j0joanna 2 years ago
@j0j0joanna Myst, Riven, Exile, and Revelation carry on quite fluidly as an original, but after that, Myst V and Uru are both quite stand-alone. Myst V happens hundreds of years after IV, then Uru picks up soon after and continues through to the present day (Uru has both an offline and online version)

I thought myst was pretty difficult. Riven was WAY hard and myst III kind of easy. What is the difficulty level on IV? Is it worth buying?
PsychoticCat723 2 years ago
IV is worth buying, but i would HIGHLY recommend a guide. There are many different paths. It is easy at first and becomes harder later on. I still have not finished it. I'm not sure yet if its a good idea to trigger events out of order. Again, get it with the guide, it is a great game, but the guide helps a ton.

haha thanks drift, I'll look into it.

MYST URU was alright. It was huge scenery and great music. But it was kinda dark and lonely. Great storyline if you like to read the books scattered around. If you want to carry on the storyline of MYST, play it. Maybe 3 Stars.

A great tribute to a great game series. What was the music you used during the scenes for Myst IV, though? I like it more than the others.

It's Myst4 main theme song.

i love myst.. but i want new game or world.. :(
biok2006 2 years ago
I like to create that kind of worlds myself. In my mind. Sometimes I draw them, use photographs etc. All it takes is imagination. Helps passing the time, especially if you're addicted to the games and you've already played them all. I even make these impossible puzzles to solve, just to annoy the non-existing players.

Thanks for the tribute. I wish there was new ones.
But here is the movie in the making.

I so miss this game, loved the graphics the music and the mystery. I spent many hours exploring and thinking about my next move. I wish they would make another just like it.

superb tribute to an incredibly immersive, beautiful, and difficult series of games. It's a shame the bros. that created Myst went their separate ways.

djaq000arkadian 2 years ago
eh nope. pre-rendered graphics would still look nicer than crysis graphics.

StarflowerVids 2 years ago
Revelation is so incredible... I've never beaten it. I could simply go online for the help files but, I dunno, just don't want to. Get super hard! The good kinda hard, though.
& yes, V ... big no no. I bought it, played for like a hr, wasn't worth it, had no Myst feel, graphics and all the Beautiful imagery of the previous games was non-existent.
MAYBE they stopped smoking during V.
patzivota22 2 years ago
Yeah, Myst V was a bit of a dud. We want live actors and pre-rendered graphics!

this is a great tribute to the best series of games ever made. these games did what few can do and took one into a whole entire, 100% believable world. good job on the vid.

I was very impressed with MYST! I really enjoyed solving the puzzles with my Dad. Our ultimate favourite is Exile:) However, I found Riven was extremely difficult to actually run and solve. Good video!

i did the same with my dad, too. Exile is my favorite, as well. :)

nothing quite like the first though.. i guess that's cleshe'. but really the innocence and innovation fo the first game (coupled with the fact that i was a kid then) really makes that game stick out in my mind still.. that and the first journey man
FLPman 2 years ago
However i've never seen a game series able to pull out succes after succes (barring Myst 5)
Myst- simply outstanding
Riven- even better
Exile- superb game
Revelation- i was introduced in the Myst saga by this great game
URU- an interesting and enjoyable experiment
Myst 5- the only mistake in the entire series.
Played them all and i'm unable to pick out a winner. All games have such an outstanding quality and beauty and i enjoyed them all so much that it's impossible to pick one.
EBTcraft15 2 years ago 2
as Revelation probably holds a special spot for you b/c it was the first time to step into that world.
Myst the original is it for me.. probably also b/c i've only read and watched the other games.. never played them
i still remember how i felt playing myst. I'd turn the lights off and it was just the scariest...like the Zork series or journeyman.. so immersive.. less about the killing and more about the experience
FLPman 2 years ago
While as a child my mother played myst, I was too young to apreciate it. I was almost scared of these massive, empty worlds. It wasn't till when I was older, when I tried Myst III, that I fell in love with the series.
23MP23 2 years ago 2
especially in the earlier versions.. it's the kinda of game that you really need to be into to enjoy.. b/c it's very subtle, yet extremely intriguing to those of us who read into it.. literally.

riven is sick!!!!!! hard as hell...

I love Myst for the 'other worlds' it portrays...it's the only game which directly puts you into a different world that's simply breathtaking.
spaz9i2 2 years ago 4
great tribute, but URU is not part of the myst series. Its actually a totally different game. I dont think its even by cyan or ubisoft.
s0mewhiteguy 2 years ago
well actually it is part of the series, and ubi and cyan did make it. the storyline is just a slightly different side one.
Strider505 2 years ago
its not by the original creator. The over all series maybe, but not the origional atrus, catherine, siris, akanar, and yeisha story.
s0mewhiteguy 2 years ago
and that was its downfall. that and it wasnt all pre-rendered.
Strider505 2 years ago
Uru was made by the original creator (Cyan). The only games in the series NOT made by Cyan are Exile and Revelation (Myst's 3 and 4 respectively).
Whilyam 2 years ago
actually Revelation WAS MADE by cyan. Exile is the only one not made by cyan.
s0mewhiteguy 2 years ago
No. Revelation was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Team Revelation.

check again. Ubisoft made it with Cyan
