The first time I heard this performance, I hated it. This time I'm only hearing, not watching, and I like it better. sprund2010 was right about Lang and the 2nd Rhapsody but out of fairness, only Yuja Wang has come close to doing the Horowitz transcriptions justice. No one else has had the same barnstorming, caution-to-the-winds attitude that Volodya brought to them. But give this performances a few listens and see what you think from there.
Who cares about opinion. Music as an ectopic flux of info for the brain acts such another sense. Musical sense variates, is totally normal. If someone dislike the Lang performances there is another pianist very recognized. This guy know the tempos, know the notes, have skills and never fall into a finger fail. Emphatizing the notes which his fingers and cerebral cortex and amigdala orders. There is no problem. In Aristothelic terms Its called vituosity and it may cause controversy...
A NOTE TO CRITICS OF STAGE PRESENCE: When you can play equivocally technical and expressive renditions of what you are criticizing without physically becoming involved in the music, then I'd like to hear what your point is. Otherwise, maybe you should practice more than you type. People will take your weird obsession over stage presence a little more seriously. I don't understand you folk. I wouldn't criticize my favorite painters speaking accent - what would be the point?
Many people are critical of his physical reactions to the music, idiosyncratic of his performances. We're all different, and thus react differently to everything, but, truly, I don't think he's acting. He has a genuine, deep connection to the music he's expressing, and I haven't heard a performance with THIS much clarity. It is through the want to express and emote that makes this so beautiful. Not only mere focus on technical perfection. And, being an opera singer, please, it's Don Giovanni.
Acting is a art, music is a art and they are not as far from eachother as arts as people too often think. Lang Lang is not fake here and that's most importand, music lives very colorfully! I like this interpretation very much
I've never heard this one played nearly as brilliant, and as to Lang Lang's interpretation - it gives me a deeper insight into Liszt's intentions than I had before. Thank you, Sissco!
I am sorry, but everyone saying that this interpretation lacks real depth are absolute crap! How can u get a more 'pervert' Don Giovanni than Lang-Lang, with all those winks and cute actions... And above all, his sound is doing exactly what he acted out! He almost played the part of the opera!
i freaking LOL at 4:24 - 4:30 ' oh wheres the camera" *stare* blink blink blink HAHAH so cute. he's putting himself in character like tom and jerry or something :)
This clown would probably show every emotion in the book and a few new ones just playing a C chord. There's a friggin' limit to everything! I'm with Horowitz when he said, "This [imitates hyper-emotional pianist] you will not see it." Some pianists show emotions and that's fine, but this is just compensation for lack of real depth - I don't know, but this is a very sub-par performance - dry! The only decent asian pianist I know is Uchida. The rest are fakes - technical skill but zero depth.
@8Ho03EdONl1liL It's a good thing you are no judge, because you seem like you have no depth speaking the way you do. talk about stereotypical, single minded ignorance as well.
Um... didn't the fellow who wrote this piece throw himself around at the keyboard and even pretend to faint on occasion? I don't like histrionics at the piano and Lang Lang has created some real monstrosities (eg. his awful attempt at the Horowitz version of the 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody) but I have to admit that this performance of Don Juan is amazing. Such explosive power and control and freedom. Credit where credit is due.
I heard him live at Lincoln center. my impression was that, when things get simple... he has no clue what to do musically. He has a fantastic technique, and he IS a great showman. But when someone can't carve out a melody with musicality, yet can play the most technically difficult works around.... something is wrong.

@stacattos, I really have no idea why anyone ever brings the matter of one's ethenic origin into matters of art. I know of asians who's playing makes me drool as if I were some kind of porn dog in comparison to this.
Again we have the typical issue with Lang forcing out his sound from a childish desire to send out a message of some kind. Instead of producing it from the bottom of his heart and drawing it from his mind, he brings it straight out from the gut. He can play octaves and chromatic thirds at high speeds. So what? But he has no grasp of the structure at all. There's this constant 'need' to violently rush through the parts in a totally unintelligent manner. I've heard much better from amateurs.
@mephistodimitrov, You don't need to be able to play it better in order to criticize an obviously overrated hack. You know, critics could ask petty apologists such as yourself the same thing. But do they? Usually: No. Because they [know] better. Once you've obtained knowledge, then try to defend Lang Lang on his positive grounds (whatever they may be), and accept his negative areas for what they are instead of living in denial. The fact is, those such as yourself are impressionable. We're not.
I'm so obsessed with L's music, its like drugs can not drop ....He played 4D(4 dimension),while others <=3D,which I mean Lang's music sounds so vivid and well-organized.U can even visualize picture in your mind when U listen to each'o his songs....Obvious,he never shows off,u can check his music when he was very very little and played exactly the same way as he does these days.Remember, the one who played 5 times at White House is him ,not u....
@RAINZHOU09, I close my eyes just about every time when I listen to this guy. And it only reassures me each time that I'm quite comfortable with holding the opposing opinion. Maybe you should open your ears?
Hey guys, Im NEW to classical music. I watched this thing on NEw years . it was a lang lang concert. I know nothing about classicla music!! However, I am a huge fan of Dream Theater and Jordan Rudess. I love the piano/keyboard, I never learned to play though. I was wondering , since up to this point I thought Jordan Rudess was the greatest thing ever. How good/not good is he when compared to classical guys?
@mrnanovideos I guess Horowitz, Cziffra, Berman, Rubinstein never "felt the music." It must be obvious that Kissin, Volodos, and Wang don't feel the music either. Lang Lang is just a nut case - I'll bet he got picked on a lot when he was a kid.
@lawrencepiano100 Indeed. I've not heard much of Lang Lang, but this is a superb rendering of the Liszt fantasy on Don Juan. His style is well-suited for Liszt...as an example, listen to the enormous range of expressions in the passages from 4:50 - 5:30. One must have the stealthy agility of a cheetah, the furtive whimsicality of a cockerel, and the reluctant nostalgia of a forgotten maid to pull that off!
@Blacckkfire oh? why do so many conductors and even famous pianists have him in high regard? explain that for me please. or are you somehow above everyone else?
He is like Mr. Bean with the way he does his experssions. They're quite entertaining :) But at the same time you can see the talent and emotion behind his playing...
yes I do agree a little with that and the problem is the eyes. The eyes gets in the way of it all. Stevie Wonder would be a better judge because he does not have the problem that we have.....the eyes....the ears is really what you'll need to make tjhat judgment.
@skimask777 And what if those "feelings and emotions" he's expressing through those motions are just rehearsed motions taught by the choreography coaches he supposedly has? In my humble opinion, then it wouldn't be real, but a big sham. Like a woman who fakes in bed ;)
@Lypur .....If a woman fakes a good orgasm and it was good enough to caused me to cum.... who the hell really cares......as long as I get a good nights sleep with a smile on my face .......she delivered.... job well done.
@skimask777 lang lang certainly has those, but I don't really like his way of showing those feelings. he's overly expressive. Imho true feelings can be heard mostly from the playing, for example Wilfelm Kepmff. It just takes one glance into those deep eyes to see the vast emotion behind them..
@totalannihilator99 On the contrary! Ling Ling has the mind of a Rachmaninoff, the orchestral sound of a Horowitz, the singing tone of a Rubenstein, the individuality of a Gould...NOT!
Hey guys!!! did you know that liszt himself was excentric and theatrical when playing piano? “When playing the music of Franz Liszt, which can be considered the height of Romanticism, we must immerse ourselves as profoundly as possible in the passionate excesses of human love, frenzies of Gypsy exaltation and trancelike dance, orgasmic trembling of body and spirit, dark nights of the soul, and the quest for religious redemption sought by Liszt during his entire life,
it should be accompanied by a consummate knowledge of images... you don't have to see his interviews. just believe what you see, THEN what you hear. Lang lang, i still don't like you though ;)
i feel contradicted... having heard Lang Lang as one would flip through sections of a magazine, i feel he is a free spirit who doesn't care about just expressing himself grossly. he probably knows he will never be sexy or what.... having said that, i still HATE him and i'm an absolutist and will stand by my impressions. i understand that it is hard for one to admit his technique is indomitable, but we should stop hearing sound by itself -
@jemokjemok Dude, that's Chinese traditional suit, just like the black suit you're wearing to the formal occasion. I admit that the color was weird, but there is nothing you should criticize about.
@PrincessDesert Which is in itself an accomplishment most virtuosi will never attain. This thing is harder than any two of the transcendental etudes. He's well-behaved, the technique is impeccable, it's a good performance.
spectacularly good and enjoyable ! difficult though to hear the Drama of Don Giovanni (Mozart) behind the virtuoso that was Liszt... he himself used to add tremolos to impress his audience... such a beautiful music, played , played and played again for the centuries to come...
I've heard LL in concert twice and both times he was amazing. Once in recital and once with the Philadelphia Orchestra. His expression is something that you either love or hate. I love it and think it adds a lot to the live experience.

He is like Mr. Bean with the way he does his experssions. They're quite entertaining :) But at the same time you can see the talent and emotion behind his playing...
I really like this guy.
lennacasa 1 year ago 4
yes I do agree a little with that and the problem is the eyes. The eyes gets in the way of it all. Stevie Wonder would be a better judge because he does not have the problem that we have.....the eyes....the ears is really what you'll need to make tjhat judgment.

El mejor pianista Clasico de la actualidad !!!

I read that Liszt played piano with lots of facial and body expressions. I guess many of you would not have liked to see Liszt play the piano.
Lang Lang plays like Jazz pianists, lots of FEELINGS and EXPRESSIONS, something many of us lack.
skimask777 1 year ago
@skimask777 And what if those "feelings and emotions" he's expressing through those motions are just rehearsed motions taught by the choreography coaches he supposedly has? In my humble opinion, then it wouldn't be real, but a big sham. Like a woman who fakes in bed ;)
Lypur 1 year ago
@Lypur .....If a woman fakes a good orgasm and it was good enough to caused me to cum.... who the hell really cares......as long as I get a good nights sleep with a smile on my face .......she delivered.... job well done.
skimask777 1 year ago
@skimask777 lang lang certainly has those, but I don't really like his way of showing those feelings. he's overly expressive. Imho true feelings can be heard mostly from the playing, for example Wilfelm Kepmff. It just takes one glance into those deep eyes to see the vast emotion behind them..

Totally grotesque, true chinese junk. An insult to Music.
totalannihilator99 1 year ago
@totalannihilator99 On the contrary! Ling Ling has the mind of a Rachmaninoff, the orchestral sound of a Horowitz, the singing tone of a Rubenstein, the individuality of a Gould...NOT!

The pianist's hands must play the role of saints and martyrs – as well as devils.”
figensco 1 year ago
Hey guys!!! did you know that liszt himself was excentric and theatrical when playing piano? “When playing the music of Franz Liszt, which can be considered the height of Romanticism, we must immerse ourselves as profoundly as possible in the passionate excesses of human love, frenzies of Gypsy exaltation and trancelike dance, orgasmic trembling of body and spirit, dark nights of the soul, and the quest for religious redemption sought by Liszt during his entire life,

Why the crazy theatrics ??
angela1894 1 year ago 2
I listen only to the music. I care not really about the expressions of the pianist. But it doesn't bother me. And the music is good.

I think artistry is often creepy and eccentric, so I think it's OK for Lang Lang to be whatever he feels like when he is playing!
her0esfan 1 year ago
it should be accompanied by a consummate knowledge of images... you don't have to see his interviews. just believe what you see, THEN what you hear. Lang lang, i still don't like you though ;)
dramf888 1 year ago
i feel contradicted... having heard Lang Lang as one would flip through sections of a magazine, i feel he is a free spirit who doesn't care about just expressing himself grossly. he probably knows he will never be sexy or what.... having said that, i still HATE him and i'm an absolutist and will stand by my impressions. i understand that it is hard for one to admit his technique is indomitable, but we should stop hearing sound by itself -

@jemokjemok Dude, that's Chinese traditional suit, just like the black suit you're wearing to the formal occasion. I admit that the color was weird, but there is nothing you should criticize about.

something about this guy really irritates me, but i can't put my finger on it
ewanl33t 1 year ago
@ewanl33t it's because Liszt is not alive to kick Lang Lang's ass. So now Lang pretends he owns the piece because he knows it by heart.
PrincessDesert 1 year ago
@PrincessDesert Which is in itself an accomplishment most virtuosi will never attain. This thing is harder than any two of the transcendental etudes. He's well-behaved, the technique is impeccable, it's a good performance.
demosj 1 year ago
spectacularly good and enjoyable ! difficult though to hear the Drama of Don Giovanni (Mozart) behind the virtuoso that was Liszt... he himself used to add tremolos to impress his audience... such a beautiful music, played , played and played again for the centuries to come...

I've heard LL in concert twice and both times he was amazing. Once in recital and once with the Philadelphia Orchestra. His expression is something that you either love or hate. I love it and think it adds a lot to the live experience.
