@cherishbauer that's partially right, as the sound bounces off the sealed end, it creates constructive and destructive interference causing more or less molecules to be in one place from the compressions the speaker creates
It's not so much an experiment as a demonstration. We talk about standing waves in a tube, but it's very hard to visualize them. This is meant to make it easier to for students to imagine how the air in the tube is vibrating because the areas of large vibration will force more gas out of the tube, while the areas of minimal vibration will have gas escape primarily due to diffusion or gas pressure. i am going to make one my self but don't know a good length/diameter for the tube and size/space for the hols
