  • Amazing technique and a great reminder that one can be very musical even with just a practice pad and pillows.

  • @theantiantihero Thank you :) You are very kind to comment.

  • Great job man!

  • very nice work

  • i wish i can play like this someday....

  • You make it look piss easy man, good work!

  • You make it look easy buddy!

  • Excellent stuff! I've been playing for 25 years, but have only recently really started working on rudiments. The kind of music i play for a living doesn't call for me to use them, it's just for own satisfaction. I wondered if you could give me any tips or excersises for combining rudiments as you do in this video. I currently can mix up my paradiddles (singles doubles etc), with single stroke and double stroke rolls etc, but I want to incorporate other rudiments like flam taps, flam accents etc.

  • haha ! awesome! I wonder how you manage to keep that pad on the pillow ! :D Good stuff!

  • @SgtPeterFuck Many thanks for taking the time to watch ! Hope your drumming is going well and having fun !

  • hey man, fantastic technique! do you have any advice on how to get your doubles that clean and that fast? I'd appreciate it any feedback!

  • @Vicfirth5bb Thanks......what works for me is practicing rudiments slow and when I say slow I mean super slow!!! snail pace. Speed will eventually come and then apply bounce and the sound of the rudiment will change too !! Some things look harder than they actually are ! keeping loose, not tense helps too! keep up the good drumming!!!!

  • I like your traditional grip! I'm in my second percussion book, and I'm still learning how to roll. But I do agree with quite a few people that pillows WOULD NOT work for this. Even practicing on a low table would work better than that.

  • @Hearts2Blaze That right !!! My point exactly !!! if you dont have practcie pads use something else ! In your case you Mum's best coffee table (only joking of course). Yes pillows no good for doing rolls LOL keep up the drumming !

  • You will FUCK UP YOUR CHOPS by practicing on a pillow or anything with NO REBOUND. Just stick to practice pads. That's why they're called PRACTICE pads. And can you play that fast with some marching sticks?

  • @mindercody There is no need to swear my dear drumming friend. Instead let us engage in a healthy debate. I teach angry teenagers like you everyday so remove that chip from your shoulder and keep an open mind. I am playing on a practice pad in the video and did not suggest that you should not use them. A real kit of drums will not have the same rebound as your practice pad, using pillows is only a suggestion for those that cannot afford lots of different pads. The aim of the video is rudiments !

  • this guy obviously has great hands and he had his way of getting to this level ... but i really dont like the idea of playing on cushions or pillows ... when you get to a real drum the extreme rebound feels really weird and you will likely be unable to control your sticks ... this guy has great control regardless of surface , but someone less developed should stick to a pad or real drum .

  • @sweetfly66 Thanks for your comment and compliments. yes, real drums over pads cushions and pillows any day!! LOL

  • im learning to play snare drum because i want to join marching band.... And some of the comments/replys, wats a trad grip?

  • Which books would you recommand to develop the rudiments like you. My god, I have to practice...

  • Any drumming books that have rudiments in them .....Joe Morello books are a good example !! Practice all rudiments slowly.......i practice the rudiments ultra slowly (snail pace) then build up speed. Thanks for your comment.

  • oh man ... I'm a heavy metal tub thumper - this puts me to shame. Half of me wants to practice my rudiments more, the other half of me wants to give up when I see stuff like this. Awesome!

  • Dont give up keep going !!!! thanks for you comment .

  • I agree castlehill. This guy's good. Traditional grip, dexterity, singles/doubles, flams & cross overs, and the transitions in between look pretty good.

I'm working on becoming fundamentally sound, too. My press roll has a ways to go, but I'm making progress; a lil better each day.

  • @speedoflite1 Thank you for your comment and good luck with your drumming !!

  • excellent work! I play drums myself, lately I have been practicing up on my rudiments in order to improve my playing. Your video makes me want to continue practicing. Keep up the good work!

  • @castlehilldude

    Many thanks for your comment.

  • I'm a beginning drummer and I have a question. Is the reason people change the grip on the left hand to get more speed since the left hand is used less often on a drum kit due right hand hitting hi hat?

  • No that grip is just for preference. It doesn't offer any real benefits; in fact it actually has lower sound quality than matched grip.

  • Try learning both grips...... the trad grip is difficult to learn at first but gets easier. Trad grip originally came from military drummers because of the way the drum was positioned on the left leg. Call me old fashioned but I really like the control you get with the trad grip. Good luck with your drumming !!!

  • which one is harder all depends on how u start

  • Sick! I cant even pick out more then half the patterns!!only thing i can nit pick on is your left elbow started comming out...lol. Just messin with ya. your up there bro!!!!!! work plus talent ='s how well you play

  • Ha ha thanks for the compliment....yes, u are right I will have to watch that elbow lol !!

  • that is fucking sick! i thought i was good at my rudiments :P

  • lol introductory website witj jazz = knew it was gona be great.

  • damn : O

  • Thank you very much for the compliment.....I use what ever sticks I can get my hands on !!!

  • Nice man very nice ! What sticks do you use ? And do you prefer heavier sticks to train with or lighter ? Cheers !

  • what? you can't diddle off of pillows, and thats the fun stuff. If you don't have a practice pad, BUY ONE! ! ! !

  • Thanks for your advice......LoL !

  • BTW you CAN didde of pillows but it takes practice....I suggest you go to your local charity ,salvation army hostel or cheap store and buy one. Not only can you use it as a pad you can actually sleep on it too !!! Wow ...with a little practice ( in your case about 30 years) you should get there !!!

  • i do it on pillow, deng....don't make a new story....it's good to start on pillows and after? u'll get amazed on diddling on drum pads! it bounces more than it bounce on ur pillow!

  • Well I guess you know better then !!! and you are the Buddy Rich of Pillow land !!!

  • Amazing, really.

  • Pa rump pa pa pum!

  • Great dont forget to post it to you tube when your done lol!

  • no, I meant, are you gonna write it out? lol

  • I gotta admit, nice playing Dave, gonna write it out so once I have the pad and pillow, I can play it too? ;-)

  • Yes, would you like me to personally sign it too?lol

  • Would that make it worth more? lol

  • Super Sick.! Your Really Good .!

  • Many thanks for watching :-)

  • we don't have poundstretcher or salvation army out here, could you send one of yours? lmao

  • Thanks Craig nice to hear from you again and thanks for your kind comment ! Unlike Mr MacBeth who likes to rip the piss out of me for drumming on pillows lol !!

  • I just ordered a Billy Hyde practice pad, can you please tell me where I can get cheap pillows like those ones? lol

  • Try poundstretcher and failing that you could try your local Salvation Army. Foam is better as feathers give me an allergy lol!

  • good playing there davie, some nice stuff in there.... enjoyed watching this one!

  • better watch buddy, folks might think i'm serious, i have seen some real numpty questions, especially on George Sheperd's page about open roll, catchya later bud ;-)

  • he,he when you coming over to Scotland?

  • so, if i bought a billy hyde pad, and a couple of cheap pillows, i could play this? ;-)

  • With practice yes ! you still practice dont you?

  • is there a way You can attach the pillows to the drum sling for marching band?

  • omg you are still using drum slings? lol!

  • Yeah, cos i don't have a billy hyde pad, cheap pillows, and a cheap bed to sit on pmsl ;-)

  • would a dhs bed like that one be ok? lmao ;-)

  • is there an attachment you can use fot marching band?

  • Can you be more specific !

  • is it better practicing on pillows cos they are cheaper, and you don't have to tune them?

  • Ha,ha...yes probably.....there is no excuse for not practicing which as you already know my friend can be done on the most basic things ! you dont always need the best and most expensive practice pads or drums to practice !

  • excellent dude!!

    you're amazing,nice combination of rudiments!

teach me some of your magic tricks!

you are good at snare drumming !!

keep up your good work and give contribution to drumming!

  • Many thanks for the compliment it is much appreciated. Practice the rudiments and you will develop a good technique but most of all enjoy what you are doing !!! Peace.

  • Nice one D; hadn't watched this one for a long while. ...super cool drumming!!

    C\

  • I really enjoyed watching this video, congratulations man!

  • Hi lucioracing many thanks for your comment and glad you enjoy watching the drumming clip.

  • i love it this is wat i look forward to being able to do in the future as a drummer

  • Thanks...keep practicing and you will!!

  • a fantastic solo thx 4 the upload

  • Great drum technique, Sir... Thanks for subscribing, I'm honoured.. Take care, Deke...

  • Tasty! Excellent work, thanks!

  • Hey nice playing! Can anyone recommend any good snare solo books? something realy musical.Thanks.

  • Try any of Joe Morello's books.....most of the books I have are from the 40's and 60's left to me by my late father.

  • This might be a stupid question but is joe morrelo related to tom morrelo ?

  • To my knowledge they are not related,Kind Regards.

  • Sweet playing man. Thanks for subscribing!

  • that's awesome, very impressive :)

  • Jesus Christ - that's too good lol I will get there one day :)

  • unreal. too good, well done

  • Dude, very nice! I see you have your doubles, singles, paradiddles, paradiddle-diddles and other multi-sticked rudiments. Now to work on flam combinations!!! Try looking up some like the flam cheese, flam drag and flam five and get creative with them. They are difficult, but talk about impressing people from all aspects of drumming, that's the stuff to learn. Keep up the great work!! (Buy the Rudimental Cookbook to find all sorts of freakishly hard rudiments)

  • Thank you bizketwitstickz, I will have a look for"The Rudimental Cookbook" you mentioned, All the Best to You!!!

  • Flam Cheese?

  • I demonstrate some cheese rudiments in a few of my videos. Check them out.

  • Oh I see...nice work but I think I will stick to "rudiments" and keep the "cheese" for my sandwiches tomorrow lol!

  • Awe, come on. You would enjoy playing them as good as you are on the other rudiments.

  • HOW DID U DO THAT!!!???? could u give us some tips or lessons :]

  • Jeeezz...I watched this sometime back and was amazed; and I watched it just now, my man, and I was amazed all over again. I'm serious, I'm an experienced drummer, but your hand work absolutely mesmerizes me. Fine, fine work. I hope you do a video with these kinds of moves on a drumset. You're a monster! :) Take care my man...:)

  • awesome.any chances of breaking some of those down for us dinosaurs?

  • wow well done..i hate practicing on those practice pads...but i guess that's just because my rudiments are not what i woulde like them to be;)

  • Thank you

  • i love it this is wat i look forward to being able to do in the future as a drummer

  • nice hands main

  • um...this is more drumline then jazz but great tho

  • OMG, After watching this I have to say that I suck. I cant even do Singles as fast as I can.

  • can anyone tell me why they do/dont like traditional grip. what is it better for?

  • i realy dont care i guess you can can say its just preference.

  • I agree with papoozle, it is a preference but its mostly used in jazz. Its also used in marching band because it looks cool as fuck when they are all synchronized...but mostly jazz...some feel its easier to throw down ghost notes when playing jazz.

  • Where can one learn to play or practice those rythums and that speed. I consider myself to be pretty good on the set, but that single hand speed I just don't have yet. Thanks for the great video!

  • amazing!

    i love it

  • GREAT stuff! That's my only musical regret--that I didn't do drum corps when I was young.

  • neither did I, and you don't have to...just practice alot on pad and pillow and hold the sticks nicely

  • great

  • you certainoly know your rudiments well...

  • I've played this video over and over, It's better than some of the videos using real drums! That grip stuff is for convenience. Traditional or military was for the angle the drum hung and the best way was by using the trad grip. Lots of drummers arrange kit drums to use the other grip. Best to know it both ways.

  • Thank you for the kind comments lowflyer55.....your drumming is amazing and I will be watchin it regulary!!!! I would recommend to anybody interested in drumming to click on lowflyer55 link, without doubt!!!

  • You complimented my *Make Me Smile* (Chicago) cover very kindly, so I came to your place to visit. Wow...if a vid deserves a 5*, this is it. Mesmerizing and striking even without punchy drum sounds to support it. Absolutely brilliant talent! Bravo!

  • GREAT

  • just need to work on your technique

  • Oh, and lastly, great rudiments and drumming!

  • And BTW, even Chad Smith from RHCP uses trad. grip from time to time.

  • Very good. But professional drummers NEVER hold the stick like that in your left hand.

  • Um, yes they do. Well, heavy metal and rock drummers may hold both sticks like in the right hand, but that is the traditional grip he's using with the left hand. I don't know a SINGLE pro jazz drummer not using traditional grip.

  • your buzz rolls look odd to me for some reason((-_-)).

  • Yes they probably do becuase I double up on the roll. Learned this in pipe band drumming!!

  • heh, we can see some Buddy Rich here, eh? ;)

  • As someone who enjoys paradiddling about on my own homemade practice pad (and thought he was getting pretty good at it), watching your vid both inspires and truly amazes.

Until now, I never realized that a person could actually make solid 'music' from this kind of thing!

    Bravo!

  • you are pretty fast , awesome.

i really would like to hear you on a drumset :o)

  • OH MY!!! Youre good!!! who are you?

  • sweet

  • 10 point goes to England!T'was awesome. But the site seems out of order.

  • im glad to see that traditional grip is still alive

  • Now I'm going to practice hard!

  • Wow! Playing the drums is fun.. Haha. Check out my video guys. The video response. I just woke up there, so sorry if it's kind of sloppy! =D

  • nice!!!!! :D

  • Very impressive. I'm still more or less a beginner...do you think its important to learn the traditional grip like what you're using? I use matched grip..well done btw!

  • AWESOME !!!

  • MAN HOW DO U DO THAT?! lol

  • god i wish i could play like you.

  • dude thats pipe band and Buddy's style combined. great work! Nice chops and beatings ^^

  • great chops ! why cant we see yr face my friend? i wish i had LH chops like this!!

  • Thank you for your kind comments!!!

  • man i've got a long way tooo goo, your awesome =D noicely done

  • fokkk!! youre the maaann!!! nice job, if you do this on pillows, then i cant imagine what can you do on real drums.. lol

  • the dude from who played this style

  • good chops.

  • great technique, well done. sorta reminded me of a bad buddy rich.

  • you sound C L E A N! good job

makes me feels like im gonna train' !! hmmm

  • goddamn I have so bloody much to learn...

  • pipe drummers the true kings of technique, I take it you have a pipe band backround.

  • well done dude, you rock!

  • My friend, you're drumming on that pad a la Buddy Rich, is OFF DA HOOK!! Really really fantastic. This is quite possibly Buddy reincarnated. Cool chops!!! All the best!!

  • had to comment. that was really great. post some more and love hear it. good job.

  • i'm feeling the rudimentary type playing...but I'm not getting the "jazz" aspect. good chops though.

  • thats why its called practice a pad. Maybe he should've used brushes?

  • if this is jazz drumming then what are bill stewart and dejohnette playing???

  • he clearly said it wasn't jazz

  • lol Lars Ulrich-DIE!

  • Great! Any clips with you at the set?

  • wow i wish i had teq like that. awesome man keep it going

  • excellent teq, nice left hand and wrist motion, all good. no wasted movement, thats how to do it . great job.

  • where is the jazz in that? not even 10% buddy r.

  • awesome! very very nice! :)

  • Very nice

  • buddy rich ,life still?
