When I was a stupid toddler I mistook Alan for the "tin man" from Wizard of Oz, Jack Haley. "This Gun for Hire" turned me into an Alan Ladd fan and "Shane" sealed the deal. Long live Alan Ladd!
What a pity Alan Ladd couldn't be happier with his own existance, he brought a lot of entertainment to millions of people. Shane was one of highlights of my elementary school years and I still watch that movie when I can find it.
How old is Alan Ladd now? I watched Shane when I was a teenager in Sinagpore...almost 50 years ago, Just watch again in Cambodia. Great Movie & memory of my youth. and reminds me how time flew

I think he was one of those rare actors with great presence even though he was of small stature and though his acting style was subtle and somewhat subdued. Even his speaking voice, though rather monotone, was somehow so mesmerizing. In a movie like Shane he was at once quite handsome, masculine and of course tough, yet at the same time intuitive and even a little sensitive There was only one Cagney, or E.G. Robinson, or Bogie, and really only one Alan Ladd. IMO he was a great actor.
For Alan Ladd fans, can we petition the studios to release a box set of his other movies on DVD? Here's a list: "The Black Knight", "The Desert Legion", "Saskatchewan", "Santiago", "The Red Beret (Paratrooper)", "Red Mountain", "Hell Below Zero", and "Botany Bay"...There, there's eight finr films right there which should be enough for a box set...His fans who are now mostly in their fifties or older, part of the Pepsi generation, should have money for this. It's also a nice gift from Junior.
Yes, Shane is the greatest western and also one of the best films ever made. More importantly, Alan Ladd represents an age when men were MEN and not the overgrown shoolboys that they have since become. I think 1960 was the turning point.
How tall he was? Could anyone tell me?

Alan Ladd simply didn't know what a hunk he really was - height doesn't make the man. He was truly great and deserved an Oscar for SHANE.

27 years ago, my office phone rang.
I had gotten to know a reporter for a newspaper. It was he.
Filing a story on deadline, he was stuck.
"Who was that Hollywood actor who was so self-conscious about his height?"
"Alan Ladd."
"Thanks."
I then knew practically nothing about movies (didn't care), and where that dead-accurate answer came from, to this day, still remains a mystery.
