Question: I was just watching The Dark Knight and i was wondering, for things like Harvy Dent's two face effect, where the CG face is thinner than his actual face, how do you make it so that you don't see the real face underneath? do you just mask it out for every frame or do they do something like painting a portion of his face green and using that to get rid of his real face showing?
@smosh1963 . Put the CG head on the top layer. whatever is not covered up will be clean up by clean-up artist/rotoscoper. yeap. frame by frame. there were lots of markers on Harvy's face for matchmove the head and facial expression tracking . they need to clean it up too. hard work for the unsung heroes.
hi so basicly i track the footage say of a cow. then i import the footage in to maya or 3ds max ect. then make a mask over the tracked footage as close to the cow as possible . is that right could you help me just with 1 part how do i begin to make a mesh of the cows head sorry i have to ask because youre footage is by far the best ive seen on the whole of youtube . also i have matchmover pro version 4 will that be ok to do this. thanks in advance youre work is outstanding
hi i no this has been on a while and i think it is exelent. please will you help me. i have tracked my face and exported the flaged track markers in to maya where do i go from there . how do i actualy make a new head like you have done with the cow i have read the comments but not helping much . how do i generate a mesh around the face ect please help you are fantastic i love this animation
you have to model the head separately and must be as detail as possible. the tracking marks group node is where you will 'parent' you head mesh. the tracking marks is not for helping you to model the head. you have to create separately
Really nice work. I'm curious if you have attempted to use tracking data such as markers around the lips to drive the facial deformations yet. I've been experimenting trying to figure out a process but run into different problems linking the tracking data to the control clusters assigned to the skin. Just wanted to see if you might have had a stab at this and if you might have any info or links. Once again, nice work.
thank you, Ryan. is a straight forward process. simply replace the whole face with CG. track the head movement, render the head texture as a sequence of projection image ( to keep the lighting standard) animate the CG head, render with and comp. Done.
as long as it is a tracking software, both camera matchmove and facial track can be done. best facial track used is in the movie Where the Wild Things Are.
could you tell if the head animation is done using some kind of software like a facial expression tracker? or did you did manually in maya? thank you!!
oh so thats how they get babies and animals to lip sync

Outstanding stuff! I would never have known this was CG.
Does anyone know if you can do face tracking with Boujou or is that just for camera tracking?

Thank you! I'll give it a try sometime soon and see what I come up with and will be sure to check that movie too.

do you have to like model the head all by your self or does it just track and does it by it self?

animation is pure Maya blend shape deformer. the whole cow head is fully CG to replace the original scared and nervous cow's expressions.
