I think it is improvised. I think he just decided that he wanted certain patterns which he included in the solo.
It's like a freestyle rapper.. They are not totally freestyling cos they know certain words rhyme. Forgive the bad analogy it was just what sprang to mind.
@mingebag851 well not a lot of people can match his style considering that his picking technique is very ackward and he uses a lot of the uncommonly used scales
jason is a good guitar player no question ask ! but all the video I saw on U-Tube jason play fast and sweep all the time ! but marty play with feeling he know how to pick the right note !
both are very emotional, jason is truly faster than marty but he doesnt play all the time fast, he took from marty the way to play slow and also he took from him many phrases like his excotic liks. Look for your self:
watch?v=1wFoSbjXB68
jason just was 18 years old so he was learning many things.
I used to think the same, I thought jason was like more a metal guy than marty, and that in the songs he put the changes of velocity, etc. However, he learned many things from many players such as Marty, and he also plays with a lot of feeling.
listen jewell
and the album perpetual burn from becker. He got many interesting things there, and also some very emotional songs
For me, Marty does no way play with as much feel as Jason. Marty is more of a melodic genius then a 'play from the heart' guy (not saying that he doesn't)
The thing is this is a very sad sounding chord sequence. It is quite rare for Marty to play such a style solo. Most of his stuff is usally more upbeat fun and unpredicatble...I am in no way taking away the brilliance of this solo, I was just making a point
just listen to throat hole from Jason becker or altitudes
Yer i think they both enhanced eachother. I prefer Jasons solo album work and martys solos in a band situation.
Although Marty got frustrated in megadeth I believe it brought the best out in him and his solo work does not touch his work in megadeth in my opinion.
marty style did not go to well with megadeth just like jason when he join with david lee roth jason style did not fix at all. jason should play with ozzy.
Hey were just back to opinion again, splitting haires really. I think were both agreed on the most important aspect: "Marty is a f*uckin excellent guitar player!"
jason is definitely more technically advanced than marty, but i havent seen a video by him where he doesnt do a damn sweep while hes improvising. i think marty's one of the best improvisers around...
Yer I totally agree. Marty trumnped Jason at improvisation I was speaking more in terms of albums etc... to be honest I don't know a guitar player alive who is better improv then Marty maybe Greg Howe but but totally difefrent style so shouldnt compare really...
i agree 100% i think ive actually read somewhere that Jason claimed to have learned alot of his improv "tricks" from Friedman, both amazing but i dont dig martys tone most of the time
In terms of improvisation i agree but jasons phrasing on his perpetual album is insane. But I hate comparing these two in my opinion they are incomparable as they made eachother what they are
@1madaboutguitar I think the main differences between Marty Friedman and Jason Becker is that Jason Becker was more concerned with technicality, and Marty Friedman was more concerned with exotic beauty and taste. Other than that, they're not all that much different in terms of skill or melody.
I can tell you this is not easy to play. Its all very syncapated and the notes have to be spot on , not to mention the pinpoint vibrato and bending of notes. this guy really is a superb guiratist and musician!
Well, a minor pentatonic isn't that far away from a minorscale you know. A minor scale is the same just with one added note.. but you probably know that;)
Hey thanks lol I've actually since figured out all the scale theory behind "exotic" rock and whatnot...but thanks for the explanation! Coincidentally, I've actually visited and enjoyed the site u mentioned as well. Thanks, and ROCK ON (as they say...)
wow then you have a pretty bad hearing problem it might sound a bit the same but thats just his style you know he did create it i htnk he should be bale to play with people judging if you dont like it dont listen to it so shutup
Marty is awesome, but I don't like his tone that much in this vid. It doesn't compliment his playing style, I think less distortion compliments his style better

@CTROCK You said: "i don't think is a improvised! he have to plan what what to play". I said: "You dont know Marty very well then"
I stand by that. Marty is ASTONISHING at improvising. If you knew that you wouldn't make that silly comment (sanity intact).

Yes this is improvised and Yes he is god! His ear and the way he incorperates those notes with his melody is beyond incredible.
He NEVER loses it! Greg Howe and Guthrie Govan are also up there with this

Wow! Marty can be fucking heavy, but he can be amazingly melodic too.

I love pretending im smart :)
ItsSTU 4 years ago
hey does anyone know what scale that is he's using it's kind of exotic sounding...awesome!
anic91 5 years ago
Its exotic cos its got a sharpened seventh... Minor Scales with these in are called Harmonic Minors.
In this case hes actually just using chromatics... but the harmonic minor scale will acheive the same effect (on a much smaller scale ofc :))
looknohands dot com is a reaaally good site for scales n stuff btw, but i can write the actual URL cos YouTube blocks it. Gay.
