Songs are usually written to reflect the thoughts of the writer, but people can interpret the lyrics any way they want. So you can see it the same way as the writer, as refering to his English girlfriend, or you can interpret it as refering to a symbol representing England. Music wouldn't be anywhere near as good if there was only one way to interpret it.

I like the fact that he is a bit of a bloke, a top bloke, and then in the muddle of punk released this. Thing is, it still sings that late 70's vibe, the one that Madness followed up so well. And then nailed it with his 1995 album.

@CarpCatcher141 I've know this tune since the 80s. I had - perhaps still have - The Jam's SNAP compilation album. Weller has also included a live version on one of his solo releases. I've never seen THIS IS ENGLAND, but I'm aware of the film.

Songs are usually written to reflect the thoughts of the writer, but people can interpret the lyrics any way they want. So you can see it the same way as the writer, as refering to his English girlfriend, or you can interpret it as refering to a symbol representing England. Music wouldn't be anywhere near as good if there was only one way to interpret it.
