@TheLegallywicked No problem! I only realized what happened to her as well. :) I think in these videos it was cut off because the mother tells what happened to Clara right after Clara freaks out.
"and Franca also wants to know in her own special way"
^this line has started a whole sub-plot in my theatre about how Franca is a lesbian and she and Margret are secretly having an affair at the end of the show. (jokingly, of course.)
Thanks so much pianostix for posting these clips, since it is as close as most of us will get to seeing the show.
Based on this particular clip, I like the original cast better for this song. I certainly understand the angst Lazar is playing, but more emotion pours out than music. And this is such a mash up of a number, the notes are important.
Patti Cohenour "I don't speak english but i have to tell you whats going on" taught a bit at my theater intensive summer camp for voice...she helped me get over my fear...and shes the best singer i know!
I like Aaron Lazar (admittedly I prefer Matthew Morrison) but I think he would have safer going into falsetto on those high Bs like Matt. It's quite high for even tenors and it just sounds a little strained. Towards the end when everyone is singing they sound beautiful, but then you can't hear him as well.
This is one of the best songs in the show, in my opinion. The chaotic yet simple music and all of the flawless voices meshing together is so incredible. And the fact that they sing in their native language when in distress is so perfect. I love Aaron Lazar, too :)
Do you suppose it was coincidence that Sarah puts her hands by her throat after hitting those insanely high notes? lol Those were pretty darn impressive.
I saw this cast live, they were all so unbelievably amazing! I met Mr. Sarandon, Ms. Berry and Ms. Clark after the show and they were all totally sweet. It was a dream come true.
I absolutely love Patti Cohenour!!!! I saw her in To Kill A Mockingbird at the Intiman and she blew my mind, singing an old spiritual. She was in Big River as the original Mary Jane Wilkes and the original Rosabud in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood".
i saw this actress (playing signora nacarelli here) as margaret as ms. clark's understudy- she was very, very good! (i just wish i had been able to see ms. clark as well... so thank you for the videos!!!!)
The same goes for me... I saw Patti and thought she was great. Although, I'll probably be crucified for saying this but I actually liked the National Tour a lot better than the Broadway Production...
I'd have to agree. I preferred all of the national tour cast (David Burnham, yum!) except maybe Christine Andreas, but that's only because Victoria can't be beat in this role...
Oh, throw Elena in there too - gorgeous voice for Clara, but I still think Katie is my favorite due to her wonderful acting skills. She embodies Clara.
Wow, the actress playing Frana has some REALLY high notes at 2:49.
And the line that Fabrizzio's mother has about not speaking english is funny. But you need that explanation there otherwise the audience wouldn't have any clue what was going on.
yeah, it wasn't, but if you watch the behind the scenes footage, i think it was meant to inform the audience of what they were talking/singing about, b/c we would have been bombarded with all this emotion and not know what the hell it was about. Also, i think it was meant to offer a bit of a relief from all the intensity of the emotion.
I love the show and the production but yikes Aaron Lazar is the weak link when it comes to the Italian, so over chewed and unnatural!

Oh my God. this is the original Franca?
Wow, she has such a beautiful high voice.
I wish Matthew Morrison was the Fabrizio in this production, but Aaron Lazar is still really good. =)

And Patti Cohenour's lines had everyone laughing hard.

Sounds about right. Also, the "I don't speak English but I have to tell you what's going on" is one of the funniest lines I've ever heard.
