The Master System was better and looked better. I know, I had it. Later came a 3D version with more detail on the side of the track. The Testarossa was smaller and the graphic a little slower. But nicer to look at.
Thanks for your comment. By this time Sega was abandoning the MSX system. Fantasy Zone II would be the last game that Sega produced for it in 1989. Both MSX versions had their own problems as with the music and sounds in this version.
I am not surprised that you might think it is, afterall they are from the same producer. I am not sure which one came first. I think the MSX2 version was released earlier that the Master System version but I might be mistaken.
Man, it always annoyed me that MSX cassette games were usually poorly programmed or simply ported from the spectrum. MSX1 version looked terrible compared to the c64. See through sprites - Seriously!
The MSX1 version had more detail, but this MSX2 version looks more colourfull. But somehow i feel the MSX1 version felt better overall. This looks somewhat 'compressed' in comparison imo.
Games made in Europe often had this more refined and detail look, while the Japanese tended to go for a more colourfull look in their games. The difference you noticed in both Out Run versions is a good example of that.
First, Sega produced many games for the MSX system, that explains of course the similaties between this version and the one on the Sega Master System.
Out Run MSX2 unfortunately does not use the capabilities of the MSX2 to full extent which is strange since the MSX2 was already on the market since 1985.
Out Run MSX2 was never considered a game with good graphics. You might even say that the graphics are used sparsely in this game (although to good effect).
A good programmer can do a lot of things with only a few bytes. :)
thanks for sharing this. i am a huge outrun fan, and thought i saw every version that got released, but i was wrong. this version isn't that bad when you consider the time it got released. the commodore 64 version is a lot less, where the road is the same collour as the side. so this version had a different collor road, and the sprites looks more collorfull too.
do you know anny tech specs from the msx2 ? how manny collors, and how manny sound channels has the msx2 ?
Aside from "color" and overall looking atmosphere (I mean the sunny setting coming out better), this is as bad as the MSX1 version, which as said has a way better rendition of the soundtrack.
Saturn version and later Dreamcast version (yes this exists) were the best conversions outside of the real thing.
Thanks for your comment. I partly agree with you but both systems you mention are consoles not home computers.
As said earlier the music less then that of the MSX1 version, although to my surprise I discovered that many people liked it, apparently because it is rather relaxing.
I agree with you that the 85% of the time it was used for gaming. I also agree with you that later versions released on consoles are better since they are less restricted by technology than the home computer version in the mid-80s.
Nevertheless the comparison Reykupa makes was unfair since the the Game Gear came out much later. A comparison with the c64 is in my opinion much fairer since both were released at the same time.
The remaining 15% were Tassword 2, Dynamic Publisher and Aackobase.
I remember playing this game or one similar to this at one stage with my kids and if my memory serves me correctly I used to be more off the road then on the road and in the sand or up a palm tree somewhere. The music is subtle and very easy on the ears too.
I noticed that a lot of people like the music of this game. More than I anticipated (see my comments upper right). I think many people think this music is relaxing.
The answers to your questions is that in the eighties (the era of the home computers) the 8/16 bit machines became a huge market, in any case too big to be ignored. Many software houses the developed games for these home computers wanted of course games that would sell good. So they decided to convert games that were a big success in the arcade halls.
Of course every game that had to be converted had to take the limitations of the home computers in consideration.
It is not bad music but compared with for e.g. the MSX1 version that I also posted it is further away from the arcade original. But it is not bad music at all.
It's nice the ponycanyon version has color that's all it had going for it though. I had the US Gold Version of Outrun which ran on MSX 1 64K. It was a port of the speccy version but gameplay was good on it, the music was certainly better using the same chip!
I later got the Atari ST version which looks good but plays shit with the same music as the MSX version I had which was pretty disappointing.
I am not surprised the Game Gear version is better since the game gear version is that for a console not a home computer and thus far more memory was available. Besides the Game gear version appeared three years later so the comparison you make is not fair.

Yes, you are right. Quite a lot of times the programmers did not bother to really get to know the possibilities of the MSX1 system.

Hi UKRetroGames,

Out Run MSX2 unfortunately does not use the capabilities of the MSX2 to full extent which is strange since the MSX2 was already on the market since 1985.

Eh, the music isn't that bad. A nice 8-bit like rendition, if anything.
skyrunner14 2 years ago
I agree, but I think that you will like the music of the MSX1 version even better.

The only thing I miss on OUTRUN for MSX 2 is FM music...
xenonsoft 2 years ago
Well, we can't have everything can we :)
The music on Out Run MSX2 is not so good as on the MSX1 version. It is a pity that the FM-PAC was not used here.
saigokun 2 years ago
Poor conversion, I think MSX was an unexploited machine, a much older computer as the C64 created much better games with similar capabilities.
Otra conversión pobre para las MSX, a mi parecer computadoras subexplotadas, las versiones para C64 siempre fueron muy superiores. Saludos.

Yes I agree with you. This was not Sega's best shot at it. The possibilities with MSX2 are endless and far greater than this game actually shows.

Yes you are right. But not surprising of course since both are from the same manufacturer.

Home computer and console weren't that far apart those days in the way that both got used for playing videogames already.
My MSX was used for games 85% of the time(and just about everyone I knew had the same habit).
So comparing to other "gaming" plaforms really isn't weird here. Those days some home computers were just consoles in disguise....
As for people liking the music... I think it's nice as well. But not a nice port in any case.

For a home computer edition this is a very good version (apart from music). Don't forget that a home computer has only limited memory.
So your comparison with the MAME version is invalid.
