this was one of the first songs that got me into them Your right they should be as famious as Zeppelin or Sabbath & there not!! & thats what gets me mad
If you know your rock and roll, they are as famous as Zeppelin and Sabbath. Sometimes, you have to dig a little to find the gems. Rock radio these days is all about the MONEY not the music, the rat b*&^#rds. Too bad, because this band ROCKS!
At the time I thought their debut album, As Safe As Yesterday Is, was the 2nd best debut album I'd ever heard. I thought so at the time and still think so now.
I always say this but to me NO ONE will EVER top Marriott as a consumate rock musician! 20 yrs ago today he passed, way too soon. Marriott could play any style & sing any style & had a natural raw crazy grace & charm like none else.Even at the end when the suits & hanger's on helped destroy him Marriott NEVER COMPRISED his music or spirit. He lived breathed & died for his music - at his detrement. Disrespected, lied to & stepped on he never lost his love for the music & I will ALWAYS miss him!
Humble Pie was class personified - Imagine that .... Four young British blokes performing a powerful song about civil rights in the USA 42 years ago, and doing it with passion, paricularly Steve (RIP) Marriot's vocals .... It's sad that no high profile American band ever had the balls to do that ..... Put this video on your Facebook page, and more people WILL see it !!!!
That overdub Harmonica is Steve Marriot too, I'll wager. Lynyrd and Duane and Greg, and all the other true confederates - brothers and sisters - would be proud of this song. What a gem to find amongst so many pieces of crap in this pile they call the internet. They told us we'd be driving flying cars. . . . Peace, Love, and groovy Understanding never go out of style. Right On!
I have to corrborate with obbor's post this is trip down memory lane for me when us kids used to play 12 strings on a bus bench in West Palm Beach at the passing cars. The Black Crows stole so much from The Pie. You put any of their albums next to Smokin' and see if they don't sound the same.
As powerful a statement as any made by Mya Angelou, Martin Luther King, or Langston Hughes! The great Steve Marriott was surely an amazing bundle of talent and vision. I miss him, and his kind (John Lennon, Phil Lynott, Jimi...talents that can never be re-invented or eclipsed. you won't find talents like these showing up on American Idol!), more and more with each passing day...
I love this band, especially the album smokin'. Can someone name a few more af bands such as these? Cause I've only known Humble Pie for about 5 years, and have only recently found out UFO, and am kinda wondering what other great blues rock bands from a while back I might have been missing out on.. I'm so grateful to GTA for introducing me to this band!!:)
because even "back then" looks were everything.Sabbath had a new sound to help them, and Zepp hap the looks.I love all 3 bands, each a different sound that lives to this day!!! And this song was a matter better left alone back then.
Omg I know I'm a bit late but I've only just seen your comment and HAD to reply - Humble Pie had the BEST-LOOKING MAN IN THE WORLD amongst them! (no prizes for guessing who I'm talking about lol!)
Although he may not be the prettiest and the most handsome man in Rock'n'Roll business ;) my gaze always go to that charismatic majik little guy (in whatever band he was). No disrespect to Mr. Frampton but you can keep the BEST-LOOKING MAN IN THE WORLD to yourself :-P
Marketing? Shtick? (Black Sabboth certainly had "new sound" but a marketing shtick too) The fickleness of mass hysteria? (think of a recent presidental election and an upcomming "memorial")
Zeppelin had a sound unlike anyone else. But other's did too who weren't as sucessful. (example:Captain Beyond)
Mott The Hoople and the Kinks never made it in the USA like the UK. Maybe it is just that "the pie" isn't big enough for everyone to get a piece. (
in the states yo are lucky to find anyone who knows who the Small Faces were,or Budgie,or even Thin Lizzy ,outside of the FM radio staples which are played to death. At least among most people under 40 . I was raised on old school rock ,thank god. I feel sorry for alot of my generation who got swept up in that hip hop shit in the 80s.(not really,to hell with them.)
because Britain had so many superb bands in late 60s early 70s that not all of them could make it to the top.The album charts were congested with brilliant bands in that era
@eticomorales They came from so many differant groups the public was confused they sounded differant from one song to the next so it went over the publics heads
do you know Cactus? I suggest you to listen to (they were active between 1969 and 1973) they were considered the American Answer to the Led Zeppelin, but they are not so present in new medias. We are talking about 40 years ago, so many things have changed.

I'm in Alabama and I need some Black Coffee. Praise my starfish, unicorn, four leaf clovers, you racsist, redneck, godfearing, country lovin, bible humping, pariotic selfish nazi self. Alabama is the melting pot of america. It's curiosity with the outside world is legendary. Without Alabama there wouldn't be a central government. There would only be a second government that resembled Myanmar. Only white. This music is so brave.

How fucking creepy and ironic is it that when he says "until we die", there's a burning building behind him?
It's almost like it's foretelling his future.

Donno, some people claim that all you need from this band is Rockin' The Fillmore and the rest is so-so boogie driven rock.
Mind you I'm not one of them!

Good to see/hear that there are folks who appreciate music from an era that probably will never be eclipsed !
I first heard Steve M. with the Small Faces, 'Itchycoo Park' like, maybe in the late 60's. Bought the '45' and wore it out.
ALSO- must say, you're rare in that you appreciate a rather obscure group that I liked too- 'Budgie'! Good deal, man.

Maybe "The Pie" were so deep that not everyone could feel the depth of their soul....Long live Steve Marriott!
