PERMANENT WAVES (1980) marked the starting point for Rush's full-blown entry into condensed, accessible progressive rock. They abandoned the 20-minute suites and mystical lyrics for catchy progressive song structures, and more human, worldly-related topics. But, Geddy Lee (vocals/bass/synths), Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (drums/lyrics) didn't lose their brilliance in composition, even if most of the track lengths were fit for radio. ENJOY! ;o)
Too many close runners up, but this is the one song I would choose if I had to listen to one over and over. Also at the top of my list is The Necromancer, Driven, The Wich Hunt, Nobody's Hero, Here Again and Xanadu.
They are not of this earth;;;...Rush was sent to us from some parallel universe which won't even come into existence for billions of years;.......What kind of band inspires these kind of comments;.........The greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only the greatest,
every day Rush sounds in my ears in the morning when i get the bus to work shortly as i walk out from the office starts again even i wake up with ``Where`s My Thing`` maybe that will be to my retirenment
@titan2781: Geddy doesn't use an amp or speakers for his bass. His bass is plugged into a wireless transmitter on his hip, which sends a signal to a receiver, which is plugged into a pre-amp, which is plugged right into the PA system. Alex still uses conventional amps and speakers, which are miked. Without some sort of props, the stage would look imbalanced. So, he has had a refrigerator, the dryers, a vending machine, a pair of chicken roasters, and now a "steam powered sausage-maker".
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as absolutely zero credibility. These guys should have been inducted a long time ago. Being that they were not I now do not want them to as it just reflects what a shame the RRHoF is. They are simply too good for that worthless award. Rush fans do not need that validation anyway.
@salasvalor01 YEs they shortened the live version for the VT , SNA and T4e tours . took the part out and the second solo . they have so many songs they need every extra minute they can squeeze to get mroe songs
@salasvalor01: Yeah, they dropped that, and the second guitar solo, but they do the "wheels within wheels..." verse twice. The studio version was about 11 minutes, this one is less than 9. They do this a lot with their older long songs. Most recently, Camera Eye. The venue, and their road crew's contracts require that they be done in a specific amount of time, and they want to get in as many songs as possible. They've done this as long as I can remember.
It doesn't get MORE bitchin' than this!! Brilliant!! Screw the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This Masterpiece in Synergy has earned ALL rights to the award,"Greatest Band to Have Ever Existed" and the nitwits at the "R&RHoF" haven't the intellect, authority or credibility to present such a prestigious award. The way I see it, the fans, especially the ones in their 50's and STILL attending RUSH shows, and the fans that joined the ranks decade after decade, presented THAT award to RUSH long ago.
I like they way they re-arranged it slightly from the record. tightens it up, and removes what is (IMHO) Alex's worst guitar break on record (and most unnecessary)
I was actually at this concert, just stumbled across this video. Thanks for posting, Rush rocks as always, and I thought it was a great concert. Phillips Arena was a great venue for them, only way to go!
@bbsura hard to ever say favorite with rush...but man this is one of em...so so sick...but remember this is a band that has made 2112, hemispheres, xanadu, la villa, and thats just the 70s..u want me to keep going..but this is a def top 5..on some days no 1...:)...rush in rio version of this is the best...
@ rollthefemers ----Y'know man, I"ve seen a lot of your videos, and I am extremely impressed and a bit puzzled at how you got multiple shots; how crisp the video is , and how very clear the sound is. It truly kicks ass! HOW'D YOU DO THAT?
@mistarax This video was not taken by me, I am just sharing it here. But the tapers (all 3 of them) taped this show and later mixed their video angles together in what you now see in this final product. :-)
im a fan over 20 years, but damn geddys bass tone is shit on this one. wtf he usually sounds WAY BETTER on those fenders.... im surprised. .... and FYI vapor trails the worst rush cd ever.
Alex does like an occasional cocktail too, proven by the fight he got into with security at some club in Florida that earned him probably his first ever mug shot. They were trying to thrash on his son though so I would do the same thing, especially after a cocktail:P
I'm guessin' that they were just having such a good time that night Alex got carried away and I guess he's entitled on the rare occasion. Didn't bother me.
@Satonica Can't remember ever seeing them take a break. LoL Maybe Geddy took Alex to the back to slap him around for throwing him off like that. Whoa to be a fly on the wall for that. heh He is Boom Boom Boom Boom who just got out of prison since he was 7, yeah?:P
This song is so, so great. What a band, lyrics, jams, vocals, guitar, 3 gurys doing all of this. Deep, deep shit. I do this too, and Pantera, Maiden, Priest, King Diamond, evertything "old school" lives on!!!!
It would be awesome to have this song from Rush in Rio on YouTube as the crowd are amazing in it and so are the band, but that goes without saying really.
Why are the crowd standing almost dead when he begins 'Wheels in wheels'? Id be screaming and singing my heart out .. its an amazing song, my favourite along with Spirit of Radio from Permanent waves!
Why did he even do that? Usually he just repeats those six notes four times. Here he did it twice and then decided at the last microsecond to play it an octave lower. On such short notice, he couldn't get to the right notes right away. He eventually did, but still, 8vb wasn't needed. Stick to the script Alex. :-p lol
@RollTheFemers - He thought it was time to go to the verse strum but at the last microsecond, he realizes his mistake and tries to do the same thing an octave lower, almost pulls it off! Classic Rush "blunder and immediate recover" moment! :)
@RollTheFemers LOL I caught that part to and thought damn I hope next time I play on stage people forgive all my mistakes hah.
Ironic though... in the song Natural Science it says "time after time we lose sight of the way" I thought OK... what if its an intentional mistake Lifeson put in there to coincide with the lyrics to see if anyone gets it like an intellectual screw up. hehe
@rainbowmonkey27 he wrote the song.i guess he reserved the right to "alter" the arrangement.(read:make a mistake!)I've seen them all blow stuff at their gigs.
