  • I have been looking for this. Thanks!

  • unfortunately the digitally remastered Castrato voice this in the movie (combining soprano, Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin) is so much better than the alternate we have today... this manufactured falseto singing we call the counter tenor. Its true problem is the lack of power to the sound.

  • I changed my mind, this is definitely the best version of cara sposa for me :)

  • Cara sposa, amante cara, [dove sei?] (2) Deh! Ritorna a’ pianti miei. Cara sposa, amante cara, dove sei? Ritorna, ritorna a’ pianti miei. Cara sposa, Deh! Ritorna. Deh! Ritorna a’ pianti miei. Cara sposa, sposa cara, dove sei? Deh! Ritorna, [dove sei?] (2) Deh! Ritorna, a' pianti miei. Ritorna, a' pianti miei. [Deh! Ritorna,] a' pianti miei. (2) Del vostro Erebo sull’ara Colla face del mio sdegno Io vi sfido o spirti rei!.
  • claramente por maricones

  • @macallan30forme speak for yourself captain ignorance. Does it feel good being so separate from humans?

  • i think i like the digitally mixed voice in the movie better, but this is still amazing

  • :-) nice editing work!

  • @Mushicolor sÍ PERO NO TENDRAN JAMÁS LA VIRILIDAD DE UN HÉROE DE ÓPERA BARROCA, BRAVURA, POTENCIA, ENERGÍA UNIDAS A DELICADEZA Y ELEVACIÓN ANGÉLICA.

  • i love jaroussky's voice!

  • Is there a misunderstanding?

BaroqueFever said that these are scenes from the movie but the audio was replaced with a recording where Philippe is performing.

He's done that to exercise his editing skills :)

  • pouvez vous traduire cette chanson

  • @SuperAlgerianboy

  • can u transalet this song please?

  • They could not use Philppe Jaroussky back in 1994 when this movie was made, because he was still a schoolboy then. :)

He has done a similar CD project on another castrato though, (Carestini, Farinellis big rival) but didn't need the help of a woman, because he can sing in the higher register himself.

  • great......CREATIVITY ALIVE.......ciao from italy

  • Comment removed

  • Listen to David Daniels version and then come back here. You'll see the difference immediately. DD is a real countertenor. PJ, well...

  • NO Jaroussky

  • @djbravo1 das singt doch eine frau, nicht der mann, oder jarusskiy ist auch eine frau? the Singer is a Woman..

  • @cantatore11 no se ni lo que has dicho

  • Uh uh. NO. There is too much of an underlying modern pop music character in the female who provided the voice for the dude lip singer with the inflexions nuances. It's corrupt. So this is not even a fair near to possible emulation of what actually sounded back then. An anachronism that's just stright up distracting and spoils classical/ baroque authenticity. People just didn't sing w/ a "hip" attitude back then. Course to maximize profits of this film, compromises had to be done to push tickets.

  • This music is just sublime!!! I just love this movie, despite the flaws.

  • Magnifico!!

  • the actor didn't look the part....his facial features are way too manly and strong....castrato are suppose to have round, boyish faces, due to the hormonal inbalance...

  • @aiayumi No, they don't. Looking at portraits of castrati, especially of Broschi himself (Farinelli), you can easily see they look like perfectly normal men. The influence of hormones on the development of a person is much overrated: Most of how you will look is in your genes, not in howmuch testosterone you make. In fact, Broschi was a very tall, handsome looking man. So, the goodlooking Stefano Dionisi was perfectly fit to play him.

  • @Mangasakka They have softened features at least. Genes set your appearance, but how it transforms/grows is accounted by hormones...eg. injection of estrogen/ lack of testoterone alone can soften the facial features, also causes other physical changes....i study physiology so i should know...Also, the REASON he was very tall, is not because of his genetic settings, it's a Result of lack of testoterone -_____-......it's a common trait among castrati

  • @aiayumi Yeah, I know that. Most castrati grew quite tall. But if you're destined to have a square jaw, broad shoulders, large hands and feet, etcaetera, because your ancestors had, you'll have them too, in spite of all the hormones (or lack thereof) in the world. You should know that. Estrogen or testosterone give you secundary sexual features: hair on some spots (or not), breasts, difference in fat partition... but they can't change what your genes have in stock for you. Ask any transsexual.

  • @Mangasakka Carlo Broschi looking like a normal man? Hhhmm, ok. the last contemporary portrait of him shows him like a normal mans body but.... ...with a babyface. And that's fact: castration or hormonal testoseron inhibiting treatment before or during puberty leads either to feminization or maintenance of childlooking appearance. Look at the asian ladyboys especially.

  • @weddinganejakopp: of the many portraits of Carlo Broschi, none show him with a babyface! In fact, he had large, broad bone structure and big black eyebrows. Also realise in the 18th century, people found some facial fat handsome in a man; some painters added a double chin. (look at Heandels portraits!) Broschi's last portrait was taken when he was in his 50's. The film shows him as a young man. Finally: the most defining injection of testosterone is the one you get while in your mothers's whom.

  • The name of the movie is Farinelli.

  • Somebody tell me the name of this Movie because, this is a piece of one movie no???

  • Listen to Radu Marian, a true endocrinological castrato. He has a very beautiful voice -- surprisingly high, neither male nor female. More of a choirboy sound. See his Fux: Emilia video and others, too. Without doubt what the voice of the higher-soprano 18th century castrati sounded like.

Also, Stefan Goergner, a countertenor. His voice (falsetto) is lower but especially beautiful in the higher notes. See his Bach BWV 473 video.

  • Pretty good editing. The audio is just a touch behind the video but better than I could do.

  • It's both a great thing and a shame that the castrato is all in the past. The real shame, however, is that they didn't have sound recording equipment to record the actual Farinelli although perfect pitch people would probably complain.

  • @mysteryperson1976

I have to agree, the voices of the castrati were haunting. Moreschi himself is amazing to listen to, and he was far from the greatest. However, what this movie doesn't accurately seem to portray is the fact that castrati were hideously deformed. They developed fat deposit in a more feminine way, were obese, had barrel-chests and usually inhumanly long limbs. :c

Most ended in poverty and early death.

  • @Ariashal First, I'll admit that I don't really like Moreschi's voice. I'm sorry to say that, but I'm just being honest about my personal opinions. However, I do know about the inaccuracy about the physical shape of the castrati. I think it's mostly due to how our culture is and how they wanted to make the Farinelli "beautiful." He was the star, so people want to see that. I'll also admit that I haven't seen the film yet, but I am expecting Blockbuster to send it in the mail pretty soon.

  • @mysteryperson1976

Sorry this reply took so long. I just got back from a camping trip. I'll be clear, I frankly don't like Moreschi either. I just found that it gave me goosebumps, likely because of the implication of his voice, rather than its quality.

Yes, absolutely. I have to agree with you that our society isn't ready to accept an icon like that who is deformed or even more unpleasant than simply 'unattractive'. The closest I can think of is Disney's interpretation of Quasimodo.

  • @Ariashal I also just came back from a trip where I didn't have any source to check my email. However, I finally saw the movie. There was a lot more historical inaccuracy than just the physical shape of the castrato and what they could or couldn't do. However, it's a very entertaining watch, and I'm fine that they've made Farinelli "beautiful." About Moreschi's voice, if you're telling me you agree with me just to be polite, you don't have to do that. We all have different opinions.

  • @mysteryperson1976

Ah, oh well. It's to be expected from movies, I suppose. All the same, it sounds good and I'd definitely rent it from a video store.

Oh, no, I definitely agree with you about Moreschi. I found it interesting, and it gave me goosebumps, but it was more from the knowledge that I was listening to an actual castrato rather than out of appreciation for his own talent. No offense to him, of course. :)

  • @mysteryperson1976 Castratos probably had awful voices. You can try to listen recordings and you will find out how bad it was.

  • @evitaercx

That's because the last castrato guy sang like shit

it's a pity because he gets all the fame for being last

but the records say the very famous castratos of the era like Farinelli had really heavenly voices

    not men.. not women..

  • @heartlessiceboy read the description of this video again- it's not the movie audio but a dubbed in version of Jaroussky singing the same song. But yes you're right about the voice used in Farinelli.

  • Take it easy friends. He was looking for Chuck Norris vs Godzilla ad he has arrived here for a system malfunction.

  • @gregboyds

  • @licht56 Speak English on Youtube you arrogant Nazi! The USA is withdrawing from NATO. How much social welfare can europeans afford when you have to start paying for your own defense. America spends ten times more than the rest of the world COMBINED for the defense that allows europe to prosper in peace. Yet europe loves to say how much better you are than the USA because you have social welfare, which we cannot afford because we pay for your defense. And europe is richer than the USA. Shameful!

  • @gregboyds Lol... Arrogant American I hope the damn muslim world nuke you.. The states is the cause of all the shit.

  • @gregboyds what do you mean exactly???

  • @gregboyds Quit being so... so ... AMERICAN.

  • By the way this a false voice is not Jaroussky or Bartoli, it's a digital combination between Countertenor Derek lee Ragin and soprano Ewa Mallas Godlewska. But actyally the color and the timbre is totally Derek Lee Ragin's,Godlewska was used mainlyfor the higher parts (You can search both singers in youtube and listen their voices) the voice of Farinelli is Derek Lee Ragin.

  • Thats music to my ears and sooooo pale! We love harpsichords!

  • Amazing , check out the cost if this DVD on amazon : O mega bucks

  • it's JARUOUSSKY's voice for sure!

  • This is Philippe Jaroussky singing, if anyone is confused.

  • @achantus1 i thought it was ladt gaga singin

  • I LOVE FARINELLI !!!!!!!!!

  • an opera di Handel - great!

  • are there Italians watching this? youre nation is so beautiful and cultured. did you know, a few miles away, theres a thing happening that makes Cannae look like a tea party. if any Italian army officers are in here, you know what i mean. and youre army sits in its barracks and forgets the hell across the sea. you must act. in force.

  • I think Phillipe has a nice voice but I know a couter he could fill a big opera house with a big orchestra... hes name is Samuel Jaime Santana - some littel videos are here on youtube- and he made a master class with Michael Chance and Mirella Freni is his singing teacher... so he learned her technic.. and she is over 70 and still sings.. !

  • This certainly sounds like Jaroussky, absolutely superb. The film looks stupid, why would everyone in the audience wave around like wind in a field of wheat? Apparently the original voice is an amalgam of Ewa Małas-Godlewska and Derek Lee Ragin. Synchronisation a bit offputting.

  • @angietihi .............in those theatres back then the atmosphere was much more social,(no TV or Radio),. not like today where a bunch of total strangers glue themselves to seperete seats in seperate personal microcosms.

  • dose any one know how he had sex? i have an idea but i dont really know

  • @stenist1 Sexuality was not as "open" then as it is now. Then, the idea of marriage and sex were solely for the purpose of reproduction (fornicating was simply unacknowledged), and since castrati could not father a child, they were banned from marrying by the Catholic church. Even if this wasn't the case, the absence of necessary hormones and puberty undoubtedly left him with a very undeveloped penis and quite probably the inability to sustain an erection long enough to perform adequately.

  • @stenist1 e.g. even though there are letters and poems written by Broschi (Il Farinelli) about his love for several women, it is doubtful that he ever had any sort of sexual relationship.

  • @stenist1 They said he was terrific in bed cause a castrato still have penis(a child penis) the castration was focused on the testicles but apparently il signore Broschi was good with other parts of his body...I forgot the name right now but there was a castrato with 3 testicles so the destroyed 2 during the castration and he was able to have children. For the other hand you could read in Cassanova's letters and other literature from the period that some castrati were gay an bottoms

  • And as Cassanova recalls some of them look just like women(cause the lack of testosterone made the body fat deposit in a femenine way). And even some of them used to dressed like women in the early baroque when both the lead male and the lead female were performed by castrati. That is why many female character were originally performed by a castrato soprano. Manly heroes were more suitable for castrati contralto. It was later in the baroque period when female character were sung by sopranos

  • Hey, hey, people! Listen to me! Farinelli's voice in the film is Ewa Małas-Godlewska's voice! Not Cecilia Bartoli.

  • that guy is creepy

  • This is voice Ewas Małas-Godlewska!!!!!! not Jaroussky!!!!!

  • how come he was able to sing cara sposa even if handel was the composer???isnt it that farinelli was not interested about handel?

  • You see my friends, when the priest would mount and incert the castrada he would feel no guilt for his perversion as there were no balls a danglin to remind him that what he was in fact doing was sodomy. He would look at this action as that of a man looking at a vagina where the testicles used to be thus absolving himself of all perversions.Simply put,"if there are no balls there is no sin of sodomy".It would reasonably suggest that a depleated cod sack would look like a large Vagina.Thank you.

  • I've researched about Farinelli and I'm now really curious to see this film. I'd thought I would just say though that the young boy at the start who sits down as the camera moves towards Farinelli- its really awkward they way he sits, it looks like he's just seen a ghost and hesistantly sat down- anyone else notice that, or is there a reason he does that? :P

  • Has Jaroussky released a recording of this song? If he has, I can't find it and would love to know where you obtained this from! :) Thanks!

  • maravilloso

  • This looks and sounds great. Beattiful, so beatiful.

  • Exquisite.

If you like listening to Arias as beautiful as this one, Check Cecilia Bartoli's last two albums: "Sacrificium" and "Sosopiri". Her performance is a delight.

  • Can someone please tell me the name of this movie? Thanks.

  • @snevetsznarf1978 "Farinelli: il castrato"

  • @alensala Thank you kind stranger :)

  • So Sad and Beautyfull...

  • si belle

  • It is is Ewa Małas Godlewska voice

  • como me gusta esta pelicula muy bonita

  • Mi querida esposa, amante mío, ¿dónde estás? ¡Ah! Volver a 'mis lágrimas. Mi querida esposa, amante mío, ¿dónde estás? Vuelve, vuelve a 'mis lágrimas. Mi querida esposa, ¡Ah! Volver. ¡Ah! Volver a 'mis lágrimas. Mi querida esposa, querida esposa, ¿dónde estás? ¡Ah! Volver, ¿dónde estás? ¡Ah! Volver a 'mis lágrimas. Volver a 'mis lágrimas. ¡Ah! Volver a 'mis lágrimas.
  • is it C minor?

  • Congratulations and salutations!

  • What a voice!

  • This sort of possession could symbolise a lover leaving the performer of this aria because he or she is too cruel and possessive, and feels that he or she has 'improperly trained' (the jealous type) the fleeting subject. 'Deh, Ritorna!' Return to me! The speaker realizes that he or she is lost without this person and needs to have the lover in his or her life. Once more, comparing the rendez-vous factor to a bird's mind is nearly impossible.

    I think too much. =]

  • I love the symbolism in comparing a bird to a lover. 'Cara sposa' translates as a loved one, a spouse. In the video; a bird. 'Dove sei?' Where have you gone? Where are you? A bird would almost never return to a certain spot unless it has made shelter or has a nest there, or unless it has be domesticated by humans. ( I had to post my entire thought in two comments, sorry.)

  • ma porca eva...

  • Un película sensacional

  • Dios, esto no tiene palabras.

  • 0:55.....i like this old theatre idea of having chairs you could move around! and you could stand too! and you could probably bring a flask and openly drink ! :)

  • good job, this syncs up really really well!

Danke, M. Jourousski! - Auch mit Chr. Pluhar höre ich Sie sehr gerne. Gott segne Sie!

  • The videoediting is very good. Good job! And great singing from Jaroussky!

  • this freaking rocks

    Excelente video, felicitaciones... From México

  • que voz mas increible!

  • I bet that castrato cant sing like johnny cash lol

  • amazing

  • I love Jaroussky! beautiful indeed, bravo!

  • very good sycing! A success, I didn't know until I read your description.

  • Muy bien bonito, the movie is awesom ,beatiful lips and hands.

  • As much as I love Cecilia Bartoli, this is SOOO much better! Even the untrained ear could tell that was a woman's voice. They should have made an effort to find a gifted countertenor. It would have made the film more popular (even if only in the music arena).

  • @ababsurdo1567 Farinelli was a counter tenor wasn't he?

  • @andrika1990

No, he was a soprano castrato!

  • @Nini19733791 Well duh! but countertenor is a singing range. Castrato only tells what he was. So you misunderstood my question. I was asking what range of singing was he? Countertenor, soprano etc.

  • @andrika1990 Castrati by the very fact of their castration were only sopranos.

  • @andrika1990 Farinelli was considered to have been a soprano castrato. His voice, however, had a 3 1/2-octave range, although he usually used about 2 1/2 octaves in performance. His later voice actually gained a few notes down into the tenor tessitura. He wrote vocal scores for himself that included those notes.

  • @sfkcbf thank you. I understand that now i've been doing a lot of research on him. So my comment up above seems rather silly now.

  • @ababsurdo1567 After my having studied and listened to high voices for years, my personal conclusion is that the very best, two voices that Sony should have chosen to morph into a "Farinelli" approximation would have been countertenor Andreas Scholl and soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr. Listen to other clips with them, and also the Caldara set with them both together.

  • @ababsurdo1567 Cecilia Bartoli had nothing to do with this film. The voice was a mixture of Ewa Malas-Godlewska and an actual countertenor named Derek Lee Ragin.

  • @ababsurdo1567 That's not a woman, you can see him perform live. -_-

  • @ababsurdo1567 The singing voice of Farinelli in the film was created by digitally merging the voice of a soprano and a countertenor. Cecilia Bartoli had nothing to do with that film !

  • @Nicoco95310 OOPS ! Didn't notice that matt92091 already said that lol

  • @ababsurdo1567 I have just listened to a live recording of him, same voice. Sorry. I do have a trained ear and that is the same voice.

  • @ababsurdo1567 I have just listened to a live recording of him, same voice. Sorry. I do have a trained ear and that is the same voice. Just poorly synced is all.

  • @ababsurdo1567 If you look at the extras on the dvd, you'll see that they used the voice of a soprano (Ewa Malas-Godlewska) for the higher regions and a countertenor (Derek Lee Ragin) for the rest: they blended the voices to approach the sound and range of a castrato.

So they Did use a countertenor , but it was not Philippe Jarrousky.

  • @Fiordiligi2 But Cara Sposa is not mixed- whole aria sings Derek without Ewa's help (she said that it is to low for her)

  • @Fiordiligi2 But Cara Sposa is not mixed- whole aria sings Derek without Ewa's help (sche said that it is to low for her)

  • @Fiordiligi2 But , this is Jaroussky's voice D:

  • I listened to this video and then watched the movie and I think they should have chosen someone talented as Jaroussky to sing. I don't know much about music but this is absolutely perfect for me.

  • @ababsurdo1567 Please see the video of Derek Lee Ragin (countertenor) and Ewa Godlewska (soprano), the singers who have created Farinelli's voice :) Fabulous ! There are on Youtube some extracts of the bonus, showing the making of. Tape "Farinelli Making of derak ewa"

  • @ababsurdo1567 but isn't the point of the movie that these castratos were very rare. Even a gifted counter tenor in this time would not have the amazing pitch and breath ability like the actual castratos did.

  • @ababsurdo1567 but it WAS a very popular movie...

  • @ababsurdo1567 cant they find a castrato??

  • just great........

  • squevedoh thx so much...muchas gracias la voy a ver y si me parece una pelicula muy lindaa...

  • anybody could tell me what's the name of the movie...?? I'm going to appreciate that

    Gracias

  • i loved this muvie but so sad and the castrate voice is really a gift of God no doubt

    amazing

  • This is like a hit...

  • Bellisimo video. Musica de academia antigua. genial.

  • Philippe darling. Real French diva. Brava. You look gay and so hot. I love you. I cry every time I hear your voice. Your full feminine lips and soft hands drive me crazy. I want to make love with you and marry you. Are you interested?

(peccato).

  • I would definitely like to watch that movie.

  • I saw it... a few years back... on PBS I think... the voices!!!! and the costumes!!!! That enough to want to purchase the DVD. I myself going to try finding it!

  • @metteholm75 Hope you have watched it by now, a wonderful movie and so sumptuous. The voice is computer generated, a mix of boy and female suprano as there re no castrato today and only one recording exists, the voice was said to be as clear as a bell ( in case you didnt know ) The closest natural voice today is counter tennor You might like to listen to Klaus Nomi sing "Death" Its here on you tube Best wishes

  • @metteholm75 The movie is available on netflix!

  • @metteholm75

i have the movie and love it!!

  • I feel so sorry for what these men had to go through in life, especaly once they were no longer popular and they lived on teh streets singing just so they could get food. This is probibly the worst era in music ever. Not only that but I feel rather sorry for the countless women back then who wanted to sing but were not allowed to do such things.
