Thanks Retro & EvilDoc! I actually sold that MWII awhile ago already. I simply had to, but I did like the sound. I'm still very happy with my Kawai K5K. I find that while it's definately not a VA, it can do some beautiful and amazing sounds which are similar to VA's. I always have a number of ideas of how my setup coukd eventually go. Sometimes I think of putting a Blofeld (keyboard) on top a Hammond XK-1, maybe a Roland XV5080 on the side MIDI'd to both... and calling it a day.
I know of a Pink Floyd cover band which uses the Nord Modular. Sounds pretty good. How do you think MWII would rate for this purpose? Also sounds pretty good that way. I'm talking Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Sheep, parts from the The Wall, One Slip, Wearing the Inside Out, etc. How would you compare these two synths for this purpose? In the studio I use a Yamaha EX7, Kurzweil K2000, Alesis Ion, Kawai K5K and Yamaha CP30 besides.
the microwave sound is unique. the wavetable sounds are fantastic for nice pads or atmospheric sounds. the nord modular is a modular monster, very flexible but the sound is different to the MW2
@brofjw I had the Nord Micro Modular. It did everything it was supposed to but the sound was so utterly sterile it offered nothing.
I've had a Waldorf Microwave (the original with the analogue filters) and with the access programmer. My god I regret selling that more than I can begin to put into words!
The Microwave II would offer way more in terms of sound depth / 'feel' than the Nord, although the Nord offers more flexibility and customisation.
im a soft synth user Reason,FM8,Reaktor 5,Komplete 6..I have a refill pack for the waldorf microwave xt 01 and it's actually sounds really good..but i would love to own the hardware original..this sells on ebay? where do you get one?
I had just bought a new Waldorf Blofeld synth and started playing with it, to listen to a short example of the Waldorf small newcomer, please look up - "Waldorf Blofeld - this is techno" by Ittaital.
I've had a MW1, MW2, XT, AND XTk in the past, and while I always enjoyed the sound, I've always found them to be weak on the output in terms of volume. Anyone else notice this? It was never a huge problem, just always seemed strange that I had to boost the signal quite a bit more than my other synths on my mixer.
I have the XT. It's a monster, positively. Wouldn't get the Blofeld at the moment, when I checked it out at the shop, some bugs occured. The Microwave 2/XT is somehow old school, built like a tank. Sounds are very clear and cut through the mix, showing strong character. The XT has a very sturdy and reliable feel to it. It sits in my setup, big and orange, and invites me to play a bit each time I come along. I use it along with my V-Synth for quite impressive layers. The XT will keep it's place..
it is a very interesting synth. You can easily make sounds that threaten to destroy your speakers/hearing (the filters are quite impressive). Overall the sound tends to have a metallic quaility ranging from hang drum/singing bowl do car pile up. The presets do not do it justice so you should be prepared to invest a lot of time in learning how to program the synth. The range of timbres is wide.
I have my blofeld. I m litlle disapointed about the factory sounds, like you said the souds that come from factory are poor for the capabilities that the machine can cover. Im looking for souds at net. No much found at moment and unfortunely the waldorf site doesnt have to much to offer, lets wait and look what will come.
Saugeile Sounds, wie immer bei Retrosound, und ein nettes Demo dazu :-)

Personally - go for a Waldorf or Novation Nova

that very first note/sound thats played sounds EXACTLY like the beginning to "Fiber Bundles- Animusic". Could this have been the synth they used?

Try programming your own bro. That's the only way you'll find the patches that YOU want, f'real.

Have you tried the old Microwave 1? I am trying to decide if I should get the 1 for the analog filters or the Xt for the knobs.
Olorintube 2 years ago
Yes I have the Microwave Mk1.
retrosound72 2 years ago
So if you had to choose, Microwave 1 or XT?
Olorintube 2 years ago
both :)
MW 1: better filter sound, perfect bass synth, more PPG like sound, hard and raw
MW XT: better for pads, more hifi like sound, nice effects, better sysex implem. real PWM
The sound is different but both synth are nice.
Today I will load a demo of the MW1 on YouTube. Check this.
