thank you john guitar for theses lessons easy to get and put names of some licks of my improvisations because i'm never learn jazz lessons guitar i'am autodidact (hearing) now i can go up in my impro because of you many thank
you can see some impro in - achachi - links on you tube and if agree you can show me how can i ameliorate my style
People are always trying to teach the modes this way but what i want to know is if i start the dorian scale with the root as the 1st how do i play the scale around the neck. for instance the minor pentatonic has 5 shapes. If i start on dorian on the C can i play the phygian on the D and still be playing with the dorian notes?
I learned 7 ways to play a diatonic scale. There are many ways to do it but let's say that seven is enough. Those are going to become the same fingerings and positions for all the diatonic modes and I'm including what you call the Dorian mode for sure. If you play a D minor chord and play the C major scale over the top of it you now hear the D Dorian minor sound. I now have seven fingerings or positions for that Dorian scale. Understand?
John! Hey, thank you so much for this lesson. It is clear, straight forward, totally easy to follow. Excellent lesson, excellent delivery. Again....thank you :)
Yeah John is a perfect teacher , not showing off as SteeJoe SatriVaï.I learned more in 9 johnhguitar's vids than Xxxxxxx .Thank you so much johnhguitar Regards from France ;-P

John,
Your explanation is great! The "this is not rocket science" approach disarms the mystique of modal thinking...
I am so impressed with your explanation of modes that I recommend your video as a "Must watch" and required viewing for all of my students.
Thanks!

Thanks for your positive comment. I've covered this topic in my Hal Leonard book 'GUITAR WORKOUT".
Good luck with your students at the Valley music Center. I've was in NJ last year doing a workshop in Redbank, NJ. Best Wishes

Why does he always refer to himself in the 3rd person?

What does that have to do with learning the content of this video? Go away friend. You can't be taught.

@johnhguitar
The comment field doesn't state "replies should only contain direct information relating to the content of the video"
Therefore, I believe I can create comments of whatever content I see fit.
(and i never said it didn't help me a tiny bit.)

The video went kinda fast, but is he basically saying that you can play the 7 seven modes using only 1 shape? and that shape being the ionian shape?
