It's actually very important to understand the different subdivisions even in simple beats... like he splains here: it's halftime (1/2), it's quarter notes, it's triplets, it's sixteenths, it's 12/8...
Even if those subdivisions are not played, they are there between the notes, and in order to do variations, to be creative and TO GROOVE they gotta be controlled...
Don't worry about those ghost notes - ain't nuthin but rebounds! Make a sound and feel ... good! lol
Yes Bernard, but they're rebounds all exactly in the right place with that incredibly delicate short stroke you use. Don't worry about me ... just fantasising that I was getting lessons from him.
what a joy to watch this guy!!! nowaday everyone is so serious.... well, he just laughs and grooves. a true inspiration, as a drummer and as a person.
It's like he's playing three dimensional when most everything else is 2 dimensional. He comes in and out of dimensions we're barely trained to notice. You can only watch like he's a magician, 'cause he is. AHa ha ha, I like that!
Well, he 'splained it really, really well. I watched this video several times and I got the Purdie shuffle. He is the authority when it comes to groovin'. Watching him play on the drums is a joy. :D
There's something about playing funky-ass music, really sendin' it home, that can make you just cackle with joy. I get that feeling every now and then, but apparently not as often as Bernard Purdie!
Amazing...

For the last week or so I can barely play anything but the Purdy shuffle when I'm drumming. It's such an addictive groove. Thanks Bernard!

what youre not hearing are the small farts seeping out which actually enhance his groove and act as a metromome/click track...............
