Air Wisconsin's call out after rotation is positive rate gear up speed mode. The non- flying pilot raises the gear and presses the speed button on the auto pilot control panel. A snap shot of the current speed is taken and the flight director will indicate the pitch needed to hold that speed while climbing. The flying pilot then says speed 200 set climb thrust after takeoff checks. Climbing at 200 knots ensures the pilot won't overspeed the flap speeds during the climb to acceleration altitude
can do without the "Candlebox" ....essentially think they're horrible, always did, but i believe when he "position's and Holds ( Opp! Line up and Wait" Now. just weird, not sure i can ever get used to that) he cranks up "Daughtry" which totally Rocks. not sure of the name of the Song, but......it's Great. now that's more like it. @danglesmcnasty that light is the master caution.. normal for it to flash this much as the systems come on line. the computer just senses abnormalities for a few seconds.
Highlife, Tech question for 'ya. was able to load my Wilco RJ series again ( somehow?) after a long period without. reaquainting myself with some features that , upon having another go'round with 'er, are suddenly being looked at in a different way, than i did before. upper PFD, flight mode annunciator, where you can set DH and MDA Values with Source selector: is it redundant to set in both valutes? if Not, why Would the Pilot enter/need/use, Both? cheers!
and one (MDA) is an MSL value, yes? the other, DA, a HAT ( height above touchdown, i believe)
so........when using one or the other, how does the system "know" that, if i set an MDA value, that i'm looking for an Altitude above Mean Sea Level, and....conversely, when setting DH, at say 250 or so, but we're landing Aspen (lol!) how does the system know that's Above Ground Level, and not MSL.
MDA reads the altimeter via the air data computer. DH reads the radar altimeter. At my airline, we set MDA for precision approaches too, so the 'minimums' call comes at the right place. We only using the DH function for cat II's. Hope this helps.
@tjm3 yup. seems pretty straight forward. i suppose beyond that explaination, wanting or "needing' to delve further into any esoterica over Air Data computers, or Radar Altimeter Spec's, could put one to sleep! Lol! I thank you for your 'well worded' reply tjm3! cheers
Hey Highlife! find myself watching these again. great stuff, and your gonna cringe cause i'm sure you get this a lot but...dude, this Vid and the Comm associated with it, is precious "gold" to many who enjoy hearing what's goin down to move this bird. Cold play at the beginning is nice intro, then when cam moves with you into cockpit, my friend, it's time to Lower Candlebox there, and allow us to really hear what your fast-talking FO is briefing you on. Please! For Christmas? Lol
highlife342....GREAT VIDEO!!! I watch it all the time. How many hours did you have when first started with the regionals? I'm an ERAU grad and doing an insternship in the spring with a major airline hoping that will look good on my resume and will get 40 hours in the 737 sim. Do you think that will give me an edge? When do you think the regionals will start hiring again or have you even heard anything?
yes, that is a version of acars. In fact, a cheap version of it, but it works. The company didn't want to pay for the acars that is incorporated into the FMS as most airlines do.
Cool Vid! I will be going to DCA here soon and might be landing a job with a regional of some sort. Not my first pic, but if a regional is all that's available then so be it. Corporate would be alot nicer though.
often times we do a TO brief well before the checklist... so when it gets busy, there's less to cover. If not for that... 'any questions' would be unacceptable. :)
Well this is the way it works. You find a flight school.Get your solo certificate, then private license, then you get instrument rated, Commercial License, and then airline transport. So thats about 3000 hours rite their. So for the average person 10 years and up to get it. Then their is the cost. Im working on commercial rite now and i got a loan. Like a student loan. Then if you stick with it and you accept making low amounts of money it will pay off when you join a large airline
not exactly... right now, the airlines are closed for about 4 years.. no matter how qualified you are you cannot get an airline job anywhere.. but when they were hiring crazy 2 years ago, u went through Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi, then build some flight time and try to get an interview.. I was able to get my CRJ seat with 500 hrs and no ATP, high altitude, or high performance.. but with new legislation, when the airlines do start hiring again u will need an ATP, so that's 1500 hrs
many crj and all regional captains for that matter are not willing to go to the majors. why, might you ask? its simple. they take a MAJOR pay cut and they start as a F/O at the bottom of the food chain. they would rather keep making their $70,000 after being there for a long time and being a captain than start all over at $25,000...and hell it makes sense to me. its all about the mulah.
Lol, FO's at majors make way more than 25,000, that's regional pay. Depending on how long you've been at the regional, the pay cut is minimal, and gets much better after year 1.
$20K for one year, and then it gets better. I know plenty of people stuck to a desk making $50K, and they are miserable. You are right. I'd take flying over being stuck to a desk, anyday. Pay gets better after first year, and once you upgrade, you'll be making more than the $50K guy stuck at a desk ... at most regionals.
Well, I speak from experience as I was a captain on the CRJ. The reality is that it took me about 5 years to upgrade once there, you make more, but also spend more being on the job/getting to the job. I spent about 10-15% of my check on just keeping the job, and was home 1.5 days a week. Better than a desk job? Maybe, but it's not as glamourous as it may seem from the outside.
No doubt it isn't as glamourous, as nothing really is, in reality. I was just trying to point out that the $20K/yr thing is just first year. I assume you commuted? I here commuting sucks, thus wouldn't living in base make it much easier?
Great videos! How do you like being a pilot? I'm currently working on my instrument rating, and pursuing a dream I've had since a little kid. Seems there is a lot of negativity these days, some rightfully so, just curious as to whether you still think it is a good field to pursue?
Its really tough right now, and you may hear that there is a 'pilot shortage'. That's untrue, as there is a huge surplus of pilots. What there is a shortage of is pilots willing to work in horrid conditions for insulting pay. Hopefully the industry will turn around soon. There are a few good jobs out there, but the resume stack is several feet thick for those. If you want to fly for a commuter, the requirements are low now, but be prepared to work hard for 20k/year. Congrats on the inst.!
Do you believe the industry will improve? I get mixed messages from pilots. I work for a regional airline as a ramp agent. I've yet to speak to a pilot, in person, who was really negative, or unhappy, yet the internet, and these various message boards seem to be full of negativity. Do you still think it is a worthwhile career to pursue, or would you go another route, if you had to do again?
I'm not an airline pilot, I'm only 17 and pursuing the same dream of being one, but I'm currently working on my ppl, and I feel the industry will improve. Its had its ups and downs since the 70's 80's 90's and now and has rebound. It just might take a little longer, but the way it is now is crappy the pay and all but its not going to stop me from pursing my dream. But that is just my opinion. It probably will not matter to you though, its just my take on it.
very very nice man. i work for mesaba airlines and prior to 911, got to jumpseat a lot on the avro rj85 and saab. never got to see an actual crj rollout, takeoff and landing before. my former neighbor from oshkosh, wi is a captain for you guys and i think he is out of PHL. his name is scott johnson. he first flew the D328, then the BAe 146 and has been on the crj for quite a while. good job with the cam.
its not that the music spoils it completely in my opinion, maybe if you have the atc comm. louder then the music it would be better. in my opinion try turning the music lower then the vid sound and see if you like it.
where has this video been!?! its been up for 3 months and I have not found it untill now. lol. Anyway FANTASTIC VIDEO! Just amazing and I wish there was higher then just 5 stars.
usually the apu supplies the bleed air for air condition until after takeoff. then comes the switchover. add a source, take away a source. engine bleed on, apu source off. Theres a check valve in the system to keep it from getting screwed up by a touchy pilot (lol)
i'm a hopeless "perfectionist" when it comes to aircraft systems. love reading, learning, and Flight simming. ( Non-pilot)sent you a message in your inbox, stating the same, and thanking you. could i ask you a few more questions i have saved, about the RJ, or a few general AC system items, i have bouncing around in my head? are you a RJ pilot?
Highlife342" drumddude46 here. thanks for your reply. another thing i've been wondering about
( in my Sim version - Lol!) is the process of what order to operate the engine Bleeds, and the associated Pack switches. what are their order?
in other words, upon engine start, after all other items complete, and we come to Packs, do i open the Engine Bleeds first, or Open the Pack ducts first? could you help me make sense of this procedure? thank you much, Gfed
1. When you load an ILS in the FMS and select the appropriate frequency and are within 30 miles of the airport, a blue needle overlay comes up of the ILS localizer and glideslope.
2. APR means if an engine fails on takeoff, the other engine will increase power by 2% to assist in climbout. Engine speed switches means the engines will sync on N1 instead of N2.
3. N2 gauges will turn amber in an overspeed condition.
4. Hydraulics are irrevelvant to engine start. Must be on to move.
Hello atlmsl. thank you very much. just a lowly Flight Simmer - but actually, for NON-Pilot, quite experienced in that realm. lol
it's actually quite fun, and pretty real. I've got a nice Wilco Publishing version in FSX of the RJ, 200, 700, & 900. they did a good job of modeling most functions. also have a killer CitationX with Honeywell 2000 CDU, much more detailed than Collin's FMS in RJ. anyhoo, learned a lot about flying from FS. it's all i have, being that i haven't started lessons yet.
Hello "Highlife" another very cool video from you i see. love this AC - I'm just a FSX 'er and have all three versions from WIlco Publishing. they did a great job on modeling it. if i may be so bold, have a few questions.
1. what is meant by "Blue Needles" and what are their use?
2. what are the APR ( auto performance Reserve) and Engine speed switchtes on Throttel quad for?
3. why do N2 guages sometimes turn amber?
4. common to turn HYd "A" press. OFF for engine start? thanks Gfed

roger that. Seems most viewers are on the same page with you.. so, note taken and new videos will be done without.

its not that the music spoils it completely in my opinion, maybe if you have the atc comm. louder then the music it would be better. in my opinion try turning the music lower then the vid sound and see if you like it.

usually the apu supplies the bleed air for air condition until after takeoff. then comes the switchover. add a source, take away a source. engine bleed on, apu source off. Theres a check valve in the system to keep it from getting screwed up by a touchy pilot (lol)

Hope my explanations made sense. I was limited on my character count so had to keep it brief.

Hello atlmsl - yes they did. thanks so much.
i'm a hopeless "perfectionist" when it comes to aircraft systems. love reading, learning, and Flight simming. ( Non-pilot)sent you a message in your inbox, stating the same, and thanking you. could i ask you a few more questions i have saved, about the RJ, or a few general AC system items, i have bouncing around in my head? are you a RJ pilot?
I may have hit the motherload here LOL
been wanting to chat with one for a long time.
Peace, Glenn

OFF for engine start? thanks Gfed

I think, and this is for all videographers out there: you don't always need music. This would have better without it.
