I wish BUSSE would buy that design and make one in INFI steel, I'd jump on that. VG-1 needs to be upgraded to VG-10 at least, the way this thing is priced...
@VengeanceIV you are aware of what InFi Steel is? According to several sources online it is less expensive than VG1. VG10 is not necessarily better, anyway.
@Rasenkrieger Well, I take most of this as being subjective to the user, manufacturer, heat treat, knife design/ purpose etc... VG1 is generally regarded as a step down from VG10, although the steels are rather close in comparison. Also, from what I've seen, INFI makes a great steel for a larger knife, ie chopper. Then again, BUSSE has a reputation so it may be hyped up a bit from what it really is. I'm basing my opinions on tests/ forums, but ill do some more research. :)
I wood never even try taking on a bear. Id run away as fast as I can, and as long as I can. Making many sharp turns and over as many obstacles as I can find. The Kukri itselfe is a beauty. But hear wear I live (Finland) an axe is more handy and useful then a kukri.
You pull out any of those for a bear attack and you're probably gonna die. I'd rather rely on a walking stick/spear. Even then.. good luck. I'd rather carry some pepper spray and/or air horn for bears.
Hi badvboynofear, good review by the way. Could you provide me the brand name / model of the pouch that you have on your Kukri Sheath? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks
its so funny that people say YOU PAID WAY TOO MUCH when they dont even understand or appreciate the VG-1 San Mai 3 steel. it makes 1095 high carbon steel look like an unbreakable comb. i would choose a cold steel kukri in san mai 3 steel over a kuhkari that a gurkah made with his bare feet right infront of me any day. its just better for high impact chops and the longevity behind it is worth 5x what they charge. this isnt AUS8A steel this is the real deal show some respect for REAL craftsmanship
Ooh that one's actually thick like the real kukhuris. All the other Cold Steel ones I've seen are much thinner. Now your only problem is that you paid way more than I did to import my own custom-specification kukhuri from Nepal itself :P. I had them blue it and make the inner edge straight for slicing, the thing is a behemoth. Engraving was free too
@MuchasMarco Interesting, and I think that you're right for the most part. BUT rather than risking having the animal knock the spear out of my hands, or getting too close to allow me to deploy the spear, I'd prefer a lanyard attached to my CS Gurkha Kukri, and I'd hack off any paws or jaws that get within range. A spear is probably great for offensive purposes (going after the animal), but for defensive purposes, it's likely difficult to deploy since we don't usually get much warning.
@ScottsUtubeWorld well you can always have the knife in reserve....also to deffend your self from a bear attack is difficult with any weapon, that's why you hunt in groups of at least 4 poeple, bears fear numbers, also pepperspray or a tazer is usefull to scare them of.
if you pull out a kukri against a massive grizzly your still probably going to get mauled and die and when it comes to western canada an axe is a superior tool
As a Kukri owner myself I can speak highly of its versatility. The +'s far outweigh the -'s. They get a little heavy if used only as a machete, but where the knives shine is chopping. Grab a kukri and you will have a days worth of firewood in minutes.
I bought the Cold steel SK9 Kukri. Tha San Mai is the same knife with the same steel sandwiched between a layer of stainless steel, for double the cost. It's regarded more as a collectors item, saving the SK9 for the actual work. The only issue with the SK9 is it stains VERY easily, and cannot be cleaned without using abrasives like gumption. I used various chemicals to clean it but they only stained the blade different colours. The grip starts seperating from the tang if you throw it enough.
I looked a long time for a good cheaper kukri and the best I found for the money is the kabar kukri. You can get one for 50 bucks on some websites and I use it to clear small trees from around my corn piles and shooting lanes and it works great.
@zerosborne The Kukri is far to large, thick, and unwieldy for game processing, but VG-1 will do fine in that application in a knife of proper application, though I would still except micro-chipping when going through a deer's sternum.
@cheeseballdino No, not even close. For an axe to be effective it needs weight and leverage. That means a long, bulky, heavy tool. You're much better off with something small-ish (I use Fallkniven A1/S1/F1 or Bark River Bravo 1), then a Kukri, then a Sawvivor. All three can do much more, but weigh and occupy much less space, irregardless of environment (unless you're in desert, in which case dump the sawvivor).
Yeah unless your wielding a real spear or a sword and know how to use it, your going to get mauled, even then you better be strong enough and lucky to hit something vital in the first swing/stab. Anything under a .357 won't stop a grown charging bear from ripping you a new one.
Which one will you be confident against a bear with? I own a Kukri or two and no matter how big or sharp I am not going to fight him with my knife unless I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO.....
@TheBowKid You sir are wrong the kabar would do much less work then the Cold steel
The point of the cold steel Kukri is that it has heft and you can chop some massive trees. It doesnt even compare. The cold steel kukri is much thicker giving it more heft whick leads to choping and swing power
I have had the KA-BAR and it chips easily because of the grind they put on it.
Cold steel is better
Now if you want something on the less expensive side then the KA-BAR kicks ass for under $100.00
@Fingerboarder83 Even with the full height convex grind, the laminated VG-1 kukri chips very easily; it has terrible toughness and poor edge ductility. If you want a user blade, the SK-5 version is the only option; the gimmicky San Mai III laminate is for guys who just like to show off their blades, and never put them through hard use.
Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that the kukri is the ultimate knife, but note: Ray Mears does what he does because he is good at it. Most people arent as skilled in survival with hardly anything like he is. Also, he usually carries an axe or a parang, depending on the environment he is in. That being said, Bear Grylls is an entertainer. He is skilled, but his show is not a real survival show. If you followed his advice, it would probably get you killed.
I have 9 Cold Steel Knives just got my Gurkha Kukri and it Rules !!! This video rocks !!! I throw it like all the rest , and I live on Bear Mountian ! ! HaHa thats why I got it .
You guys should change your gun laws in canada so you can just shoot the bear. Also cold steel is nonsense, my brothers cold steel knife rusted sitting on his dresser.
@happykillmore88 First of all, any high carbon steel knife (as I'm assuming it was) should ALWAYS be coated with an anti-rust finish after purchase, because that's just what happens to that grade of steel, unless it's San Mai 3 steel (which the higher end Cold Steel models, such as this, are made of). Don't blame Cold Steel for your brother's neglect/ineptitude.
The Cold Steel Gurkha Kukr is absolutely a great bush knife. When you first use this knife for chopping wood, you would not want to use no other knife for chopping. That's how great is.
I still think the Cold Steel Trailmaster will out do the Khukri in the wilderness. The Khukri will out chop it by a bit, but the Trailmaster would probably fair better at battoning, due to the shape(flat back).
I found a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri with (Carbon V steel ) but now they make it with ( sk-5 steel ). What's the point of the change and witch one would be best for this type of knife?
@cubehole666 They are essentially the same thing; Carbon V and SK-5 are both essentially 1080, but are imported from Japan. If you're planning to do any chopping with the Kukri, get the SK-5 version, because the San Mai VG-1 kukri will chip.
like the previous comment, bear gets the 12 gauge slug, as in Canada we cant have our handguns in the bush, and the knife is a last resort and hopefully never needs to be used that way
@sheldontimm yes! thank you sir. so many people dont understand that about the laws up here. i dont agree with them, but i have no power to change them. id prefer to have a shotgun compared to a handgun if im against a bear anyway haha
got mine yesterday. imediately noticed the verrry sloppy job in the layering of the metals. the taper was clean but on one side, the outter metal layer stoped an inch and a half from the blades tip while only half inch on the other. also, on one side, from the blades spine to the sharp edge the outter layer stops an inch short. for its price the the whole blade should have even coverage of the outter metal layer.
