BTW, another distinguising feature of a pirya is that the (orange/yellowish) color from the belly "flames" up higher then on the red belly varieties..

@sothgunfil actually it is a real piranha, Pygocentrus piraya, it is the largest species of true piranha. Reports of specimens reaching 24" have been recorded, it is from the Sao Fransisco river in Brazil, which it shares with the equally stunning and rare violet line piranha (Serrasalmus geryi.)

Deffinintly a piraya. and definitly larger then 17". Judo, check out p-fury and you can see better pics of this beast if you dont beleive its larger then 17". Pretty much all the posters who KNOW its a 20" PLUS PIRAYA are p-fury members (cluser one, winkyee, jmax611...) who have seen it much more then a single ill lit vido with no references.

one of the differences between pacu's and piranha's are their tail fins. Piranha have a distinctive upside down fin. the bottom distal is bigger than the top ones.

get you facts straight this is a Pygocentrus piraya. these are more common in Brasil than you are led to believe. They have a tank full of these bad boys at the San Francisco Bay Aquarium. They Look dark green with gold flaking scales and yellow bellies.

it is clearly a black pacu wich get up to 4 feet long and do not have canine type cutting teeth but have molars not that much different than our own. The best way to tell a rde belly pacu from a piranha is by the eye color. Pacu have gye to dark grey some times even black color eyes. A piranhas eyes are red. Plus the teeth are a dead give away. I know from exp. I was had when I first started to raise fish my self

as far as i know the "true" black paranha is a solitary hunter, but may occasionaly hunt in small packs. as far as one species fighting another, that would be a hard thing to say for sure. though undoubtibly a school of 30 red bellied paranhas could tear appart a few black paranhas, large carnivors tend not to fight each other in the wild unless all other sources of food have been exausted. a shoal of red wouldnt want to attack a black beacause they would endure casualties, they like easy prey.

Thanks,very helpful information.I'm going to get one or more piranhas so the first step for me was to pick one and man, was it hard. Considering that the more exotic piranhas are often rare, might only live in one river or something, but worst of all cost $100+ PER PIRANHA, I'm going to have to go with the common but classis red piranha. Even those will be about $20 each, but it's a sacrifice for a great fish.
