We can't destroy or create energy. Same as we can't destroy or create matter. However, we can change matter into energy, and change one form of energy into another.

Why do you square the gravity value? My teachers never really explained that to me.

Because if it weren't squared it'd be velocity instead of acceleration. Meters per second is velocity, which is distance over time traveled. Acceleration is an increase of velocity (meters per second) over a period of time (second). Hence why it's seconds squared. If that doesn't explain it very well, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up a better example than me rambling. :)

Most of my science teachers occasionally did fun demonstrations, but I understand I was one of the lucky ones in that respect.

Not so much with 'flames, but demonstrations of involving small fireballs, beds of nails, liquid nitrogen, sodium metal, and molten lead weren't too uncommon.
