@mdjuricic If you're in Europe, check with your country's laws for raptor possession. In some places, all you need to do is pay for one. (Of course, if you know nothing about raptors, be prepared for when you accidentally kill/maim it.)
this is the best vid I have evva seen ( boston accent :) the american kestral is my facebook group's photo ...... it was amazing watching that bird sooooooooooo totally trust you.....with camera running and all...what a gift from God.....thank you for sharing...i have subscribed to your channel....sincerely cheryl anne a/k/a gilps1958...
You should falconry in USA,,Great for US Falconry Birds Lovers.,So the population keep growing too,,,The birds will be much more healthier...on the wild they just last 10 years,,,If you falconry they will last 30 years...its a shame...***The Human Ignorance ***..these birds never get domesticated,,,they stay wild,,,they just get tamed..if you decide to let them go they will survive....you just helping them,,THINK BIG USA.~~~~
Actually, our hospital specialize in pelagic birds. We also wash oiled wildlife, including raptors. Our last BIG oil spill was Cosco Busan in November, 2007. We had a small one last November, but only 40 oiled birds. It's very rewarding to release our patients back into the wild, after they are fully recovered.
I just saw an American Kestrel, yesterday on New Years eve. It was a male, and he was eating a small bird on top of a wooden utility pole in my backyard. He was making a call too, as he was eating, which is how I saw him, because his call is not that common in Lad Vegas, Nv.
I prefer using them to hunt grasshoppers instead of small birds. It's a nice change of pace from the larger birds of prey and you can get 20-30 "kills" in a 30 minute outing. ;)
@MrBullsh1t The Genus, "Falco" (falcons), contains a number of species (types of falcons), of which the American kestrel is one. I.e., "falcon" can be used to describe the gyrfalcon, peregrine falcon, merlin, prairie falcon, american kestrel, etc.--but "falcon" does not apply to a goshawk or sharpshinned hawk (accipitrines) or a red-tailed hawk (buteo) or a Harris' hawk (parabuteo). "Falcon" is kind of a generic name, like "dog"--it doesn't specify what kind of dog/falcon.
One of the worst k-birds I've had to date. She only wanted to catch bugs. She'd only go after sparrows if they were released indoors. She was hideously skittish and froze up or fled if she spotted a larger raptor anywhere nearby. I think she'd had a prior close encounter with another raptor trying to eat her, and I wasn't willing to drop her weight any lower than what I was getting crummy field response at because her keel felt too sharp. Back to red-tails for me: they're way more fun!
That kestrel looks that he got accustomed to free food all the time!

It was kind of anti-climatic when she landed on a phone/power line 30ft away. Beautiful bird though, I used to see them in my area during the summer.

She was a beautiful bird. I've heard from many falconers that that is a problem with kestrels.
