As for the mouthpiece, I think it is an Otto-Link. That has been the Standard with many a Jazz player, and it gives a nice warm tone. It sounds like it might be a 7* or maybe an 8. It is a round chamber mouthpiece and gives a nice even timbre throughout the various registers (Octaves) of the saxophone.
I saw these guys in Vancouver in 1978 and they did this exactly for 2 hours,,Sam played alto, tenor, flute and piano, exactly half an hour on each instrument. I still haven't recovered.
He really taps in deep--an what a volcano! I saw him at this time at Oberlin College, and of course he was playing piano and flute--it was mind blowing. This tune's a little thin but cool.
Boogster, get yourself some Sam Rivers on cd, I promise you, you wont regret it! Classic songwriter and one kick-ass saxophonist!
And to the person who posted this, a huge huge thank you!!! Its also great to see so many positive and inspiring comments from people who love this music.
this whole series should be encased in gold and buried in the ground so 100 years from now when "free jazz" has finally died, some lucky person may find it and hopefully re-start it properly!
There is no "proper" way to play free. That's the whole point. Playing free is about not having control. Letting the ideas flow from body to body and into the instrument, with as little human interference as possible.
Free jazz wont die. It can't. Jazz without freedom is not jazz. Therefor, for one to exist, the other also has to.
Without question this is the most idiotic statement I've ever come across about Jazz music. Spoken like someone who doesn't play an instrument other than his pecker.
Sam is heavy. This band is heavy. That's all that needs to be said...oh, and might I add that Sam is still kicking the same ass today? Never compromise.
Not bad at all, huh? 88 is still too young to lose this man.

@lnchmt Yeah, proves you don't have to have a Selmer--a great player can sound great on a no-name sax...
