@EaglesNestOne64 Yeah he's trying to get iD to sell him the rights, hopefully he can get them or their new parent companys Bethesda and Zenimax to do so, not like there going to do jack with the liscence but then again EA does shit with the System Shock, Ultima, and the Wasteland licences and there seemingly not going to give them up. So but you got to have hope.
Don't forget to mention the "mods" that "Ceilick" is making for Keens 7-9. Commander Keen 7 (Keys of Krodacia) and Commander Keen 8 (Dead in the Desert) are already finished and have been available for free download for over a year, while Commander Keen 9 (Battle of the Brains) is set to be released later this year.
oh yeah. "aliens ate my babysitter", almost forgot that one. still the final confrontation with keens nemesis mortimer mcmire was left out and we ll never see it after the keen-series was canceled. :C
i just dont understand why they aborted keen completely after keen 5. WTF. they didnt even finish the second trilogy keen 5-6. mortimer is still out there somewhere.
keen was already a legend in its time, bet keen 6 would have made even more money then its prequels.
why cancel something that would have been comercialy successful? it was better then supermaria imho.
The good thing about the wii is it now has commodore 64 games avalible through the virtual console. If they can do a computer, then they shoud have dos games.
DOSBox is the best emulator for DOS. It is freeware, so you can download it for free on the internet. You have to mount c by yourself, example mount c c:\dosgames .After that your dosgames-folder is the c of the dosbox. It works great!
i remember commander keen, but the only one i played was goodbye galaxy. i was scared of those blue guys that breathe fire, so i would like run away from them
I remember playing Commander Keen 4 and when me and my friends first saw the Dopefish. We didn't know any enemies had names so we named him King Fatso since he was so big and it sounded funny to us at the time
There is a bug in Keen 4. When you save a game after you obtain a key and later restore it, the key's lost and there is nothing you can do, but to die and restart the level.
ohhh boy this brings back memorys :) i rember back when i was 6 years old i was getting into games and 1 of the first games i ever played was keen wolfenstain and doom...man those were the times
About the lives and points: I realized that as well and so when I played Commander Keen 4 I imposed on myself to save only on th map, not during a level (like the first trilogy only allows saving on the map). It ups the challenge and lives have more of a purpose again.
I actually played through the game on Hard difficulty using this "restriction", and it was very fun. Okay, I must admit, at one point I did break my rule, however this was in the secret/hidden level.
Super Mario Bros. 3 came out -roughly- the same year. Those level designs were like "Citizen Kane" to Keen's "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". But if you had fun with them, then okay.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite platformer of all time, but you said "nowhere near as good as anything on a console system" not specifically referencing one of the best games of all time, SMB3.
Well, you statement was just as blanketed. "They were better to be honest..."
To restate what I said, I'd say: They were nowhere near as good as most in that genre, on a console system. Although, I would play a crappy 8-bit game over this, any day.
Wolfenstein 3D was the one thing that gave PC gaming its kick in the butt.
Nice review, I don't think you missed anything. To some Keen was better then Mario, Keen had a zapper. It's surprising their are keen fan site that still make mods and other stuff. (last time I checked)
Awesome games. Bought them a while back from 3D Realms (formerly Apogee) for 20 bucks (which I now regret, because for the Steam deal). Actually, it's still worth it for me.
i would have to agree on this i remember the first misson on goodbye galaxy it was the best of commander keen i know and will be the best i sergest to those who havent played it to do so
Good review..tho i must say that playing Keen on a controller instead of a keyboard is an outrage...but thats just me, oh and please dont pick on the save system, to be saying that free saving is bad and should be done with fixed checkpoints is just plain wrong...lives arent important? right...play the game on max difficulty and have only like 8 slots to save on...pff honestly get your facts straigt. 3/5
Excellent review boy! YOu know really what are you talking about! With Wolfenstein 3D Comander keen saga were my first PC games that introduced me to such machine. Why dont review some arcade ports to PC like street fighter?
Wow, it's awesome to see other ppl remember old games like this. Commander Keen 4 was the first game I owned for the pc and it just brings back memories seeing the gameplay and listening to trivias. Plus it assures me again I didn't make up this era in my mind^^ Thx man
The scrolling letters of the Commander Keen opening at 15 seconds is an homage to the title sequence in one of my all time favorite movies: The Terminator.
I remember playing commander keen goodbye galaxy 1 as a kid and this video brings such great memories of nostalgia.
I think I played the other keens too, at least kommander keen 1 and Kom. Keen 3 (Keens Nightmare). GODDAMN I WANNA PLAY THESE THINGS AGAIN,AT LEAST C.KEEN 4!!!
Great review of these games (including the first three and Keen Dreams)! Man, I remember playing these when I was little. I never got to play the fifth and sixth one though... And I'd have to say that the fourth one is my favourite. Woo Timbits!
Spear of Destiny's Mission Packs 1 & 2, also called "The Lost Episodes," were developed by FormGen. They have different graphics and sounds, but other than that, they're 42 more SoD levels. They come with SoD when you buy it from Steam.
However, there's a shareware Wolfenstein 3D mod also called "The Lost Episodes." It uses the graphics and sounds of FormGen's SoD Mission Packs, but has 10 fan-made levels.
I've just relived all these classics i used to play when I was about 5 years old. I think episode 5 is the best, apparantly John Romero's favorite too. Anyway all 7 episodes rule!
Hmm...you suck at typing too. Every sentence starts with a Capital letter. Also didn't you know "u" is spelled "you". Don't say anything unless you got a good point.
Theres a rumor that Commodore 64 games will be appearing on the Virtual Console soon, but the next new format on the list is definetly the Master System.
Oh, loving the series tho Jason, have you thought of doing the original 2D Duke Nukem games or Jazz Jackrabbit at all?
I loved the original duke nukems! When Duke 3d came out, I would brag to my friends, telling them I was a fan longer then them since I played Duke before he went into strip clubs.
I'm so glad that you're still working on these. Each one is a new thing from my past, or a completely new experience!
I suggest that you look into "Space Harrier" -- this is an arcade game that got remade over and over on consoles and PCs. The arcade game was immersive too, as you'd sit in a moving booth to play the game. :)
It only sprung to mind, though-- not sure if it's 'abandonware' either!
The amount of info that you give out is somewhat refreshing from the whole FUCK FUCK FUCK BLA BLA BLA of many others reviewers. Also, thank you for showing me the origin of the all-mighty dopefish
Great job, man. Looks like you spent a LOT of time on this. I never played commander keen before Goodbye Galaxy, but I loved that game. I was disappointed to see how much of a step back from its awesomeness the previous episodes were.
