for me I think the important thing about learning language is try to spend time with it as much as you can, like listen to music or watching movies.They help me a lot to learn English (I'm Thai) without attending expensive class outside.

@tumsabai1 Why? I hate that, it makes it more confusing when teachers use phonetics. I want to see the letters and know how they sound, how they are used and why they are used. Phonetics are not good for me unless I'm only using a book, but we can hear him speaking. Actually learning the alphabet first helps me with new languages.

I'm an Irish guy living in London and my partner is Thai, I've been learning slowly for 3 years, but I still feel that my vocal is very limited, so I can't just say what I'm thinking, but unless I learn them in context then you don't remember them. That was very helpful, it's very visual and aural at the same time, this very important as you can't learn this from books!

No, but it will be a lot easier to learn because.... you can take notes, you can figure out the tone quickly and easily by yourself of any word, you can have Thai write something or spell it out loud to verify that you really are saying or hearing what they are saying or hearing...... and other reasons.

question--if you get the tone wrong, won't thai people understand what you mean by context alone? as a native english speaker, i very often can understand foreigners by context even though they mispronounce words, or if they get the accent wrong on polysyllabic words.

@jaykertiss Yes, usually Thai people will understand you if you say an entire sentence even if the tones are wrong, however if you just say one or two words and the tones are wrong sometimes it will be difficult for them to know what you are trying to say.
