I just watched this fight and I agreed with Mnkutbory. From the rear, it looks like the ref. tried to touch the blue to break them up and that made the blue let goes and leave the door open for the red to finish him off.
The main difference is Khmer think we invented it and Thai think they invented it. That is the main difference. Technique-wise, it is pretty much the same, except there are certain moves each prefer. For Kun Khmer, we tend use elbow strike a lot where the Thai use a lot of kick. That is just my estimation from seeing the fights.
Just to be fair, we have no hard written record of who invented it. So I'm not gonna be flat out biased against the Thai. But if you look at it historically, Khmer people roamed the Southeast Asia mainland and built an empire before the Thai people even appeared on historical records so it is pretty fair in a historical sense to believe that we Khmer invented it. The popular notion among Khmer and foreigners is Khmer invented it and Thai popularized it.
You may see the contempt on behalf of Khmer people stating that Thai stole it from Khmer like many other cultural things when their race came on the scene. But the correct word would be influenced however the contempt comes from the fact that Thai don't admit they were influenced by Khmer. That is why Thai government has been pretty sneaky in history education. They tend to omit many historical facts just to uphold the myth of the greatness of their people. Look up Thaicification for that matter
