  • I was just thinking "Holy fuck, This guy plays and sings exactly like Ed Robertson. then I got smakcked in the face with the big brick of "stop being a retard"... In all seriousness though, well done ed, a really amazing song in terms of songwriting, technique, emotion and delivery and you've completely checked all the boxes here... nothing left for me except to start a slow clap... CLAP.............CLAP............CLAP...........CLAP..........CLAP.......CLAP...CLAP...CLAP...CLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAP

  • absolutely beautiful song, only regret that i only recently came across it.

  • Am I the only one who noticed "Barenaked Ladies" is spelled wrong? lol

  • I never realized how good he was at guitar, since I only ever heard them on the radio when I was younger. I'm rediscovering one of my old favorite bands, and I can't stop flipping between videos. I want to learn to play some of these songs so bad <3. Can't wait until I have a few spare hours to mill through it all ^^.

  • im here cuz my guitar teacher played this song. i love this song now. i was shocked when he told me what this song was about

  • @emobrandon555 What's the song about?

  • @koolkat104 a window washer :D

  • @emobrandon555 "My hands clench the squeegee." Ah.

  • @koolkat104 More accurately, a window washer who hates his job and as he observes the corporate guys in the buildings, he wonders what it would be like to change lives and how different it would be. They have easy jobs and make lots of money while he gets paid little to nothing to risk his life everyday. Truly a beautiful song..

  • damn I love this song. nice version, sweet guitar

  • I seriously am strting to think this band was for me :) cuz all of their songs make me thinkl of my life and how i feel like 90% of the time. GodBless u guys :)

  • Ed, this is the greatest song you've ever written and by far my favorite. Never gets old.

  • I wish they would have created more like this..

  • i want tabs for this shit

    tasty. very tasty.

  • Ed.. you are a great songwriter

  • love the lyric at 2:28

  • when people say he's a bad guitarist or singer I just wanna slap them.. but instead I show them this song live

  • your bathroom is the same size as my apartment

  • I've seen you guys in conscert about 10 times or so... and this song gets me every time. Your beautiful Ed.

"Their frightened of jumping, in case they survive...."

    Just perfect.

  • amazing song! when a song is great, it works fine even if it's played just with an old guitar on the bathroom.

  • wow i just woke up and watch some clips.... this is a nice one to wake up with!

  • can you please honestly make this into a cd? i always search to download them, but i can't find them anywhere :(

  • Thanks for this, Ed. I was homesick, now I'm not.

  • this and nightswimming by rem are the two most amazing songs ever.

  • I can't look below me.. did he just say "blow me" ??

  • So glad these sessions exist. Ed you are a star. It's so cool when a mastermind like yourself makes yourself so accessible and personal to your fans. Long may you pat yourself on the back for your contribution to the human soul. Bnl forever. Much peace and all the best for 2011.

  • Ed this really is one of your best songs. I love the guitar work! I wish the best for ALL of you guys! Keep rockin'!

  • 3 people didnt get caught when they fell

  • I would love to see this become a CD but the problem is the whole band would probably have to be payed for it and quite obviously ed is the only one doing work here lol.

  • this is my by far favorite barenaked ladies song...and i love the fact that it was recorded in a bathroom.......love you guys.keep it up

  • Wonderful.

  • 3 people didn't like this??? Must have been dropped on there heads at birth!

  • I've watched this video countless times but JUST noticed that Barenaked was spelled wrong. :P

  • @HalfwayxThere Not only that, but there's an extra "s" in "sessions." I love it!

  • What an incredible song

  • "they're frightened of jumping... in case they survive.." makes me cry because I understand...

  • ed is my favortive bnl band member

  • it's to fast. Not that it's not an incredible tune...

  • I'm pretty sure most people in this thread don't realize who's playing here...

Crazy good. Wish I was half as decent.

  • Id say its almost better then the original! you should release an acoustic cd of the bathroom sessions!

  • 3 people don't have a soul.

  • @pysgodfach usually i hate it when people target the dislikers to make some kind of joke. but this one is right on. this is literally my favorite song.

  • fuck me

that was far better than i expected! youve got some crazy skills how long u been playing guitar?

  • @gingeee8794 lol

  • @gingeee8794 Dude, its the guy from Bnl! So of course its gunna be fucking awesome..

  • @gingeee8794 lol, ed from bnl

  • Not to nitpick or anything, but "Rock Spectacle" is a live album, this song is originally from "Born on a Pirate Ship".

  • @MonsterBeverage Yeah i agree whoever wrote that didnt look far enough back in BNLs discography... (sigh)

  • This is my fav BNL song... so awesome

  • I am impressed by the fact that the chords are the same as Pinch Me but that it sounds totally different.

  • i wish i could play that well...i tried copying him and got lost around...the time he started playing. fantastic guitarist and a fantastic singer.

  • @CapnPeanut5271 I think I love you a bit for posting that comment :)

  • too fast. Slow it down

  • @SendMeBelow22 The man just has mad skills. He knows what he's doing. He's been doing it for over a decade. XD

  • @SendMeBelow22 Muppet.

  • @moonturkey thanks that makes sense now, I got the window cleaning part but couldn't figure it all out

  • Great song, I love it but what is the meaning behind it

  • @TheGoldeneagle1 I believe it's about a suicidal window cleaner:)

  • This is very cool. Thanks for sharing it!

  • this is my favorite bnl song, I love the lyrics

  • Thanks for sharing Ed - say hi to Serena - loved her in Spokane 5/2010

  • When I Fall is not from Rock Spectacle, it's from Born on a Pirate Ship (their best album in my opinion).

  • i cried when they played this at universal at mardi gras

  • my favorite song <3

  • your awsome man, saw you guys in orillia, great performance!!! hope you guys come back soon!

  • such a beautiful song.. definitely one that represents some rough points in my own life.. but its a song that i feel kind of a has a GOOD point at the end.. or at least a conclusion to what the window-washer is thinking

  • I agree liton.

  • This is one of those songs that you wish you'd written yourself.

  • Ben is that you????

  • This is my favorite slow song from you crazy candians! Playing in the bathroom is genius by the way...and I'm candian too :P

  • @sillypunkgrl You know there's another a in Candian and then it makes Canadian.

  • Good song

  • This song is so beautiful. I'm trying to learn to play it and this video is so helpful, thank you!

  • Excellent song.

So well done, that when closing my eyes I get vertico.

  • Wow, amazing song...

  • Such an amazing song.

  • Saw you guys the last two times you played Dublin Olympia (I literally sang the whole way through your "everything to everyone" tour...really really amazing. When are you coming back over?

  • Does any one know where I can find or buy the correct music for this song? Sheet music for the guitar is what I am looking for. Thank you

  • I listen to this at least once a week. It makes me cry every time

  • @Belindashort I cry every time I listen to this too...

  • These guys are just too good, always have been, always always will be.. <3 waiting for a chance to see them live in the U.K..

  • BNL <3

  • Did anyone else notice this video is entitled, "Barenakes Ladies- ..." Just saying. Great song, and I am sad to see Page go. Can't wait for the new album, guys!

  • Brilliant. The chords are really neat. I just realized that this song reminds me a bit of Toad the Wet Sprocket's style (e.g., Something's Always Wrong), which is never, ever a bad thing.

  • Genious. Make a Bathroom session CD pls, it will save alot of searching here. Thanks.

  • 2:10 ;_;

  • I was almost scared to listen to this one...

  • Beautifully done, you sometimes get into it :) Tis cool, Keep um comin' :D

  • thumbs up >D

  • So let me get this straight, i havnt heard anything they have done since the 90's and they kept putting out records AND recorded them in the bathroom and put them all on youtube for me for free? It must be an Acoustic/Canadian thing... damn, im still going to have to buy the back CD's arnt i.

  • omg love it!

  • It still brings tears to my eyes to listen to this song. So beautifully written and emotionally conveyed in composition. Thanks for creating this amazing classic!

  • Comment removed

  • this songs beautiful.

  • Beautiful, maybe we can hang out sometime im from Toronto :P this kind of music is the exact reason I espied to play the guitar/drums

  • Whoever thought that a song about a window washer could be so passionate and emotional?!

This used to be my favorite song of BNL, but now that Steve left the band I've become nostalgic and claim every song as my favorite.

  • how does this video have less than 50k views? powerful lyrics & love this acoustic version.....i watch this video at least 2x a week.

  • Not any more! 50,240... :) Great tune...

  • sat up for hours fixing your problem, spammed the hell out of alotta suicide watch sites. they say they all loved it.

  • That's amazing.

  • omfg, this just became my favorite song... so beautiful O_O

  • This is the song that I have had going though my head for 8 years. I love this song so much, and I don't think that I would be the person that I am today without this song. Thank you.

  • i keeep coming back t you.. thankyou

  • One of the greatest BNL tunes

I have always wondered... does he jump in the end? All through the song, he says "If I fall..." Yet at the end, he asks "Would you catch me if I fall? When I fall...?"

  • He's saying that it's inevitable, if he will die, he want's to die happy, with his loved ones (he made the lyrics for his family).

  • This song is absolutely beautifull, thank you so much!!

  • One of my fav songs of BNLs and my most fav ideas of theirs to do this bathroom session.

I come back here often when I sign in.

  • Best song of all time. You are a genius!

  • I've always wondered if there's any significance to the meter choice of this song... or if it's just because the lyrics flowed better in 6/8?

  • There's something about the meter of this song that allowed me to play it correctly and sing it with almost no practice at all. It is perhaps four times more complicated than anything else I can play and sing. I think the meter just facilitates singing in this case.

  • Does it matter why it´s in 6/8? And actually, I think this song is in 3/4. Think about four-bar phrasing. Between the start of one line to the next, there are twelve beats.

  • goddamned beautiful song

  • Absolutely. One of my favourites.

  • is that title a typo?

  • Great writing, playing, and singing. Thanks for the songs. Please make more.

  • He's hot...and so good!

  • ha awesome!!

  • cheerts buddy wish i had ur taloent!!!!peace

  • Not for nothin, but is that a "Taylor" guitar? It doesn't look like the typical "taylor?"

  • It wouldn't surprise me if it ia. It sounds amazing.

  • I love this song! Thanks for posting!

  • Wow! That is talent right there.

  • Funny i remember this song from Born on a Pirate Ship.

    -.-'

  • we need more artists to join the "Look at me play songs in my bathroom/bathroom" demographic of YouTube.. It's nice to see that Ed and Steve get it.

  • Dammit, Something tells me its going to take me a while to learn this song on guitar, haha.

  • Sesssions.

  • I love everything about this track!!!

the guitar his voice the lyrics!!!

    THANK U NAKID LADIES!!!!!

    For making really good tunes!

  • One of my favorite songs. Such an odd idea for a song, turned into something incredible.

  • I don't know if it means anything, but this song was played in Chicago as the final encore after a year of suffering through a horrible breakup after being with a girl for nearly 5 years. I awkwardly asked on Myspace for them to play it at the concert I was attending, and when it was the last BNL song I heard live as i stood fifth row from Ed Robertson I felt as if a part of my entire existence had been validated. This song has touched my life.

  • Nice coincidence, glad they played it. The song touched my life as well.

  • brilliant... in my playlist many years ago, and still worthy to remain. Thanks Ed / BNL!!!

  • incredible guitarist/musician

  • Anybody know if he says 9.8 straight down, because the accelration of gravity is 9.8 m/s/s???

  • yeah. i think that's what it is referring to.

  • Yes.

  • Yep. " 9.8 straight down"

"On the surface" the song is about a window washer

Look straight in the mirror, watch it come clearer

I look like a painter, behind all the grease

But painting's creating, and I'm just erasing

A crystal-clear canvas is my masterpiece

One of my fav BNL tunes!

  • Mine too! That's my favorite verse. =) Love them!

  • Such a powerful verse, I can really relate. With trials and adversitys in our life, we overcome them and grow stronger. A crystal canvas is my masterpiece..

  • i just learned how to play this on guitar but im not quardinated enough to play it with a pick yet so i finger pick but its such a beautiful song

  • ed robertson is really cool, and barenaked ladies have been around since 1988- happy

    20th guys!

also this is originally from the album "Born On A Pirate Ship" released in 1995-96

  • This should have far more than 33,XXX hits!! This is one of my favorite songs... Thank you for sharing!

  • This song is my ear crack. So addicted..perfect..

  • his guitar playing is awesome his picking is kickass

  • Did that guy say "Blow me"?

  • He says "I cant look below me, something will throw me"

  • Uhh dude..Go to a BNL concert. Ed ALWAYS says, "did he say 'blow me' after the below me line".

  • Someone sign these guys, quick!

  • Barenaked Ladies, love. Look 'em up! :)

  • Record label? No, these guys, fortunately, are done with those. Record labels suck the soul out of music. And they´re no longer necessary. You can just sell your music on myspace or iTunes or something. You don´t need a label anymore.

  • lolz

  • they are signed i think!

  • one of the more beautiful songs there is, so creative
