  • Its why I have all 7 seasons on DVD and a few of the Wire. The TV awards people have their heads up their asses when they ignore TV like this.

  • didnt agree with ned beatty all the time on hlots, but his acting was world class in this series and the show was not as good without him, daniel baldwin, and jon polito

  • Homicide is the greatest show of all time. EVER!! I used to plan my Fridays around this show when it orignally aired. The acting, the debth of the characters and the music. WOW!!! I watch the entire season once a year and it never gets old. There has been nothing to top this show. "The Shield" is close for obvious behind the scene reasons and maybe "Third Watch". NYPD Blue totally sucked!

  • Edie Falco

  • And why didn't Clark Johnson get an Emmy nod for this season?????? Such an underrated actor in this superior show!

  • I cried too-when it first aired, and teared up again watching it now. They literally had to back Lewis up against a wall ( in this case the Clearance Board ) for him to accept that Crosetti intentionally killed himself. And that "wall" had to tumble on down in tears.

And my man Pembleton on the steps in dress blues saluting Crosetti's last ride by the job was priceless.

  • Frank Pembleton's salute to his fallen brother, in dsidainful defiance of his superiors, was IMO the single most dramatic moment in network television drama. What a show!

  • I only watched this episode about four times and everytime I see Pembleton saluting Crosetti, I tear up. Damn I didn't see this scene for about a year. Even though I own the dvd set.

  • Only this show would have a line like "There's no way this crowd's gonna polish off 34 dozen cookies." Brilliant.

  • This is the best TV show. The actors play their characters perfect. This episode is one of my favorites.

  • As a fan of The Wire, I love seeing Homicide and Oz and some of Law & Order because I get to see younger versions of the actors who play my favourite characters. I can't also believe the guy from Across 110th Street is in this show as well!

  • This whole is amazingly beautiful.....so powerful. Thanks for sharing it with us Easilyjaded2.

  • All power to Frank........AWESOME!

  • Damn.....Meldrick is a GREAT actor.......I always enjoyed watching him on this show.

  • This and the fake confession Frank gets are my favorite episodes.

  • thank u for posting this.

  • My mom zt"l talked about this show for a while. she taped by chance this episode and insisted i sit and watch it. this episode made me a lifelong fan. By far one of the best series ever on t.v.

  • Poor Meldrick. He wouldn't take Felton's death any better.

  • This just makes me depressed at how bad the cop shows are on TV no!. You would NEVER see an episode like this on CSI, Without a Trace or Criminal Minds. Those guys don't have great writers or great Actors like Ned Beatty and Clark Johnson.

  • @TheBlackDragon54321 While I agree with most of your statements, it's not entirely the writers or the actors faults (William Petersen is a pretty good actor) but I think the blame is on the networks, which themselves was the cause of Homicide's self destruction. Look what happened to the Tonight Show with Conan O Brian.

  • He's so sexy!

  • Thank God It's on DVD! I saw seasons 1-4 & it was so great! That series! So real. So totally unlike Law & Order.

  • You are so right!

  • i remember the first broadcast of this episode of Homicide. back in the good old days. i was shocked at the ending and loved it too. and i thought,"that is damned good television"

i havent had that feeling in a while now. it is always up ahead and just out of sight.

  • Amen to that!!!

  • Lewis made me tear up...Clark Johnson is a fabulous actor. All of them are! These people should have to buy storage space for Oscars and Emmys!

  • frank is hardcore

  • The most startlingly good bit is where Meldrick breaks down and Stan goes right to him and holds him - he instantly reacts totally tendering and "fatherlyly" even after their conflict. Brilliant.

  • I tear up when Pembleton comes onscreen at the end every single time I see this.

Damned Youtube... I hadn't seen this in years... I kinda wish I didn't have easy access to it now... it would be more special if I only saw it every few years...

  • No kidding. Absolutely beautiful.

  • I remember seeing this episode when I was a kid. It touched me deeply then and it stills do now. Gee, thanks for posting.

  • Meldrick's breakdown in the squad room, when he knows he "can't protect Steve anymore" was one of the most heartwrenching scenes in the whole series.

  • omg, i can't believe all this is here.

my hubby and i call this "crack tv."

we can NOT miss an episode on WGN these

    days.

  • the moment when frank pops up is spine chilling

  • I've probably seen this episode 4 times, but man, when the funeral procession goes past the police station... I won't spoil it, just in case. The point is, though, that even though I know exactly what's coming, I still start blubbering every time I see it.

    Wow, I miss this show.

  • Thanks for uploading this clip. I love that episode. It's so touching. It really showed off Clark Johnson's talent. I cried when he broke down. So damn sad!!

  • ej2: hi, can you please post the energized musical sequence at the end of "Sins of the Father" that has the song "Sinnerman" (Nina Simone) in the background as Meldrick gains access to the house, and finds the young man hiding in the basement and Falsone checks the car? That episode is underrated. The whole episode works together like a minor motion picture but the above musical sequence is a gem.

  • the best 10 minutes of the best television show of its era. it is still missed. thanks for posting this.

  • Wow, great info! Thanks.

Do you remember a song in an episode, it was by a woman, that was either titled or had the chorus, "Out the front door backwards"? In the scene, a homicide victim is being wheeled out on a gurney, out the front door, backwards.

I'd love to find that song.

  • It took me a bit to find it, but it's the song "Full Moon, Empty Heart" by Belly. The lyrics are actually "out the window backwards". It played during the episode "Every Mother's Son" in season 3 (such a sad episode...)

  • I think it is anyway, I can't seem to find the exact scene with the gurney. But let me know either way :)

  • That IS the song!!!

    You are the "Homicide" master.

    Thank you once again.

  • Oh man this is a great part Stan questioning Meldrick, Meldrick freaking out, Kay telling Frank that he is a selfish jerk then Frank in his dress blues.

  • Absolutely.

God I miss good tv so badly.

  • Me too

  • Jon Polito is such a great actor, it was a shame that they wrote off his character so early into the show.

On IMDB it says "Was not re-hired for season 2 of "Homicide: Life on the Street" (1993) by producer Tom Fontana due to a disagreement."

Does anyone know what that "disagreement" was?

  • I heard from Jim Yoshimura that Jon Polito left on his own accord.

  • According to an interview I read (I tried putting the link here, but youtube won't allow it) he was forced to leave because Fontana had to write in more "visually appealing" characters, but he told Polito that he would only be gone temporarily and that he would definitely have him back the following season. Polito was upset and didn't believe Fontana, and publicly complained. This pissed off Fontana, and he wrote to have Crosetti commit suicide.

  • To continue,

in this rather recent interview, Polito admitted that he regretted his decision to publicly complain and that he should have believed Fontana, because he realized that Fontana really would have stuck to his word. If you wanna read the interview, just google 'jon polito homicide interview' and go to the first link, which should be the website "Groucho Reviews".

  • I remember someone telling me that had Politto agreed to come back, his plotline would have involved him having a gambling addiction.
