@TheGitfiddlekid Sound it out. That's the way I learned to play three years ago. It's better to play by ear, because you can play anything you want just by listening to it, and after while, it becomes extremely easy.
This song was originally from an unreleased album called Homegrown. There were a few of songs on it that were named after states. Not sure why though.
Hey when was this done? The first few bars sound like America's Horse Song, so I guess it may have been around that time. Anyway it was nice, soft and sincere, almost like he was singing it for only a handful of folks who really wanted to listen. Thanks for this one I've added to my favourites.
beautifull tune, yesterday evening i heard it for the first time - during the concert in amsterdam rai... it's gentler than most of his acoustic songs
I've heard quite a few songs from Homegrown. I've heard No one seems to know, Give me strength, Hawaiian Sunrise, and Love/Art Blues. I read about the song Kansas in "Shakey" but this is the first time hearing it. Thanks for posting this.
Yes, Jimmy McD mentioned Kansas as being deeply personal.... It's interesting that these gems (interstate, Hitchhiker, Kansas, Ordinary People) are being fianlly put out there on You Tube - I'm glad to hear/see 'em - I just wish Neil had gotten them out there in an offical version sooner.... I'm told the new album will be called Chrome Dreams II (in honor of Chrome Dreams that never got released) and will have such songs on it as Ordinary People, Gateway of Love and perhaps Intersate..
This is a fragment song like the ones described in "Neil and me" a book by his father 'Scott Young'; fragment songs such as "Til the morning comes and"Cripple creek ferry"
@secretstrummer it's1974-1975. would have been on the album Homegrown which he decided not to release. other songs were: STAR OF BETHLEHEM, MEXICO, LITTLE WING, FLORIDA,FROZEN MAN, OLD HOMESTEAD, LOVE IS A ROSE, HOMEFIRES....therre were others i can't think of
I always prefered Neil easy and low like this. Not that he aint good at making noise. Just prefer him like this. Serious lyrics and poetry.

Great song!! Saw him perform it at the second show at Constitution Hall in D.C. Hopefully it will be on Archives along with Road of Plenty.
jschmieg 4 years ago
Wow, Road of Plenty is a great one. I liked it better than the song it became, Eldorado.
pizzacat311 4 years ago
I agree. Guess Eldorado fit in better with the rest of the songs on Freedom.

On the strength of this, 'Homegrown' will be a work to behold, when it finally arrives in the archives.

Whoa! I read in Shakey he some unreleased songs that were really personal. Maybe this is one?

i think its called 'kansas' because there's a song by the band Kansas called 'Hold On' that has similar lyrics
M3talRul3zz 4 years ago
this was written in 1976, before "hold on" was released as far as im concerned.

Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. How long will we have to wait to hear the complete Homegrown sessions??!!
jimipresley 4 years ago
the song is kansas.
it was recorded in 1999 on the horde tour.
but it was originally recorded in 1974-75 for the homegrown sessions (and as we all know that album remains famously unreleased)
but we havent long to wait. i actually believe the new
date for the young archives.
september or october is judgement day folks.

Many thanks for posting Jon. Nice song. What era do you think it was ... sounds like it could have ended up on Silver and Gold.

Yes I beleive you are right David..The only time he played this song was during his 99 tour, which featured his songs from Silver and Gold
