I know the information of the "original artist" says it was the Original Caste, however, my father 55 now - told me that the true original artist was a male singer - he had the actual copy of it on a cassette (relatively beat-up at that) and the quality of the recording is rough. As for coming to a final conclusion of this beautiful moral melody I have to say the original artist isn't recieving credit for their masterwork. Anyone who knows differently feel free to respond. Can you imagine what Peter Paul and Mary could have done with this song? Them letting loose with this on stage? Wow. That said, both this and Coven's are first rate.
@FlourescentBlack Yes, Every life is precious. I think you are confusing Christians and Republican with people who are lunatics. (i.e. killing an an abortion doctor). @minkymott Coven had a great version. I think the Original Caste did the song for the movie, Billy Jack. That's the version most ppl remember listening to bc it was a big deal when the movie came out. :o)
I grew up hearing Coven's version, but I like this one best, even though I never heard it until recently. (Thanks, YouTube, for helping us discover a lot of nice stuff!)
This was a great tune sung by Dixie Innes. I don't know if Dixie still performs but I found a video of Bruce from 2005. They - or Bruce composed the theme song for the Seattle World's Fair. Awesome talent from Sundre Alberta Canada.
This is an amazing song, my mom sang it to me when I was little. It is a little more upbeat than I expected. Someone should remake it. Slow it down and have someone like Dan Fogelberg or John Denver sing it.
@janab791 How about a duo of Dan Fogleberg AND John Denver, along with Al Jolson and Elvis singing backup, with Jimi Hendrix on guitar and Keith Moon pounding on the skins and Mama Cass eating a ham sandwich on the side?
Wait, they're all dead. Except maybe for Elvis. I think I saw him in the buffet line at Circus Circus recently. Then he left the building.
This is the best version of this song. Others are very close but I dont really like them. The original, is allmost allways the best, as in this case. So go ahead and listen to it, go ahead tell a friend, He wont give a dam in the end.
You people are all full of shit. This band started at a local coffee house in Calgary called the Pigs eye. I was there on a regular basis. They used to play with the Brute force jug band. Now there's a bit of history for you. My name is Inge. I was there from the beginning.
What I love so much about this song is the tone; there is a feeling that, if the Mountain People could come back from the dead (or in spirit), they would still embrace the Valley Folk in warm, heartfelt hugs. Though brutal, the Valley Folk are still our Brothers, and we must Love them All the Same. An Eye for an Eye Makes the World Blind.
THIS is the version that was being played on am radio in the 70's, not the second rate one by coven. this is the one i haven't heard since then until now.thank you for posting it. i was sick of the coven one the first time i heard. as great as the song is, the moviie was a sorry piece of hippie bs.
Ya know, I have sung this song since 1970! I never really listened to the words until today. My best friend and I got cooooovered in goosebumps. Wow what a message!
Peace is better served by resolving our diffrences. The pen that writes the peace treaty is mightier than the sword that starts the war. Even the most just war kills innocents.
As to the comments I see here, this is exactly why this song was written. War is never justified. Defense IS. WWII was a justified war, Iraq in the beginning may have been, likely we won't know until 20 years down the road. There is always someone to start wars and always someone to fight them, but unless you fight to protect whom you love and what you believe in then what you fought for is as hollow as killing in the name of "peace".
Awesome tune from "The Legend of Billy Jack" what a great movie! Saw it a in the back of one of those strech wooden panel station wagons at the drive in as a kid.
sorry to hear that mike ..i know its a small consolation but i thank you for fighting for our freedoms..i shook a vets hand at a gas station one day (he had the veterans license plate)and thanked him and he said i just made it all worthwhile.so if i could id shake your hand .without people like you we dont have the freedoms to post whatever we want.
Being on the left does not make you a Christian and God can't make you a Christian by someone else's word. The one who came up with justification was not Christ. Give the song another listen.
When I was little, my daddy had a cd with this song on it, and this was always my favorite song :) thank you so much for uploading this video!

@cobrachoppergirl quit trying to bitch about society. we don't need any more snide racist comments than there already are. complaint fail.

Sounds good "The Original Chaste", wonder how they got that name?

@sweetredredwine It's actually "The Original CASTE", not "Chaste". But that would have been an interesting moniker.

For a child-sounding song, this has a very deep message, especially in today's world with terrorists and the war

"FUCK YOU WE WANTED IT ALL, BURN IN HELL!!"

Anybody know where we can listen to The Original Caste's equally great "Country Song" or "Picture of Bob Dylan"? There's no hope using iTunes.

Being on the left does not make you a Christian and God can't make you a Christian by someone else's word. The one who came up with justification was not Christ. Give the song another listen.

Wow, that dude on the far right of the picture has an EPIC mustache.
Anyhow, absolutely love this song. Remember the Christian Left? They exist, honestly, and they need to speak up more often.
